IGN: The Order 1886 seems great, except for one thing

First things first, watching the video this guy is beyond clueless.

Secondly reading the entirety of the article let us all know exactly how clueless he is. "So I instead decided to focus on picking them off with my rifle."

You didn't have a traditional rifle in the demo you played the only weapon available to you with actual bullets was the pistol.

The "concern" over this games "game play" at this point just seems to be a negative talking point or a means to push an agenda.

The new trailer shows quite a bit of game play that was not available in the demo, which happens to be the same demo from 2013. Which is also the same one that was at E3 and Gamescom.

I do not think this game will reinvent the wheel but I think it is catching a lot of undeserved negative attention.

We know that there are multiple weapon functions for several different weapons, Melee combat (which isn't even present in the demo),stealth/puzzle segments, soft body physics(its still in there see Nikola trailer for example),more open environments and a bullet time ability. Also the score from what we have heard so far is pretty amazing I'm a big game/movie music guy so don't judge me on that one.

What I have noticed about this game in particular is it seems every positive aspect is overlooked to reinforce that negative agenda and honestly it has gotten pretty old.

I will look to the skies in February and I doubt I will be able to find a single crow.

So we're judging an entire game on a tiny sliver of a demo.
We're also very interested in what IGN has to say...?

If this game ends up lackluster than I'll accept the criticism, but it seems a bit premature to write it off at this stage of it's development.

I love how in the article he says "Oh this isn't the first time we have had issues with the gameplay" and links to the article with Colin talking about technical issues and him realizing it was a TPS. Colin didn't say anything bad about the gameplay just that it was "Typical" and Colin even goes on to say that the gameplay looked fun. Much criticism.

Every game with a pre-release demo ever made has always been judged for ever since before dinosaurs roamed the Earth. Why does The Order: 1886 get a pass?

We are all playing the same stuff with better graphics

No, we are not all playing the same stuff. What were the equivalent experiences to Journey or Dark Souls in prior generations? What about full 32 player battles in Killzone or Warhawk?

And reducing games to simple mechanics is kind of dumb anyway, since a game's experience is much broader than that. It's a combination of mechanics, visuals, audio, story, characters, and probably a bunch of other things that result in a greater whole. If you just go by mechanics Uncharted and TLOU are basically the same game. Yet that would be an absurd statement to make since the experience you get playing either game is totally different.

And lastly, "fun" isn't the be all end all for games. The more encompassing question to ask for a game (and really any form of media) is "Is the game engaging you? Is it absorbing?" If the answer is yes, then you're playing a good game. Often times that means it's fun, but you can be engrossed by something that isn't necessarily "fun". I'm pretty sure that PT demo wasn't fun, but it sure got people engrossed in it.

This looks more and more like a game that sites like IGN will say "meh", while actual gamers like. Cult classics make them even sweeter.

Judging a small demo and judging an entire game are two entirely different things.

Guys, it's a goddamn opinion. Not some edict handed down from God. Take in the information, see what others have to say and then move on. Once the game is out, the gnashing of teeth over this one early opinion will seem like energy terribly wasted.

If you disagree, that's great but unless you have actually played the game, it just sounds like people hating on anything that does not reinforce their preconceived opinion.

I'm not that guy but his answers would probably be:
Spec Ops: The Line
Gears of War
Max Payne 3
Uncharted
Resident Evil 6
Insert any popular shooter here

Edit: oh forgot Mass Effect

I mean yeah. Look at how diverse that list is. The ultimate point I think is that saying "It looks like every other shooter" is silly when you look at that list and realize how different those games are.

That is a pretty damn diverse selection of third person shooters. Anyone who says those all play the same are showing their ignorance.

Never seen a game get dragged through so much shit before it even released. Fucking ridiculous.

TLOU went through much of the same nonsense leading up to its release. Cinematic games are the easiest ones for detractors to throw dirt on and judge without playing.

Spec Ops: The Line
Gears of War
Max Payne 3
Uncharted
Resident Evil 6

Those all have the same perspective, but are most certainly unique from one another just like The Order. I don't understand the hate for TPS. For many the second cover is taken it is immediately written off.

Love this trailer, also that music track.

Awesome avatar.

Wait, people were actually expecting to get top-notch gameplay from an admittedly narrative experience laden with quick time events and cutscenes? I'm not dissing on the game, but every game has something to draw you in. I never really got the sense that gameplay was what Ready At Dawn was trying to sell on.

It'll probably be like the original Mass Effect or Spec Ops: The Line. The gameplay isn't anything to write home about, but it might be workable enough to drive a stellar narrative.

Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhh....

Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhh....

Well I like narrative games even if they don't have the best gameplay. I'll probably enjoy The Order when it comes out too, even if the gameplay is average. I don't put much stock into the quality of gameplay as long as it can carry through a really neat story. What I'm saying is that other people should probably not be expecting a total package experience where narrative and gameplay mesh into a godly formula. I don't think enough people are going to enjoy it for what it is when it releases.

Haha okay sorry if that was rude. The dichotomy between those sentences just caught my eye. In general I agree with you. People had complaints about spec ops gameplay while I had no problem with it so I see where you are coming from.

Don't forget binary domain and vanquish. The two best tps from last gen. :)

Agree.
Some games are more an experience rather than pure "fun" and looks like The Order in one of them.

I agree that Spec Ops and Uncharted play more or less the same way (with a different degree of sponginess), but Mass Effect has almost nothing in common with any of the other games you mentioned other than the third-person perspective.

I think the game looks great. I love the tesla/steampunk/supernatural theme. I really don't get the stock being out into a random play test, especially one by IGN.. Unless it's just a good excuse to argue or take the piss out of a new IP because of boredom for some folks.

Those two are the exceptions since they're from glorious Nippon and baka gaijins would never understand them.

Seriously though I liked BD and V more than the others I listed, don't know how could I forget them. :(

So basically being of a particular genre (in this instance third person shooter) automatically equals all being the same? Idiotic point if that was the one he was making.

Being as there is no MP I'm betting the campaign is going to be a pretty meaty 15-20 hours. Fuck ya'll, this game is going to be amazing.

I mean, we criticize game publications for writing overly ball waxing previews all the time. So they didn't like it, whatever.

The Order would be in a far better position PR wise if we could actually say it plays most like one of the above. The truth is we still can't!

lol what? There are games that get it way worse. Just search Titanfall on GAF and read those massive threads. And there has been worse than Titanfall

I would not have a problem with if:

1: it was an informed opinion

2: it was about something new

The author of the article didn't know what he was doing and is playing the same demo that has now been previewed 5 times.
