IGN: Top 25 videogame franchises

Wuthahell constitutes a franchise anyway....is having more than 3 full-fledged iterations a prerequisite? That would explain why Diablo is missing, but Warcraft??

Oh nvm....

Halo should definitely be on that list...I mean, if we're gonna see Chrono in there... Halo is a franchise considering how there will be a probably non-numbered Halo from Wingnut Interactive/Bungie and Halo Wars from Ensemble.

again, it's not about Sales Age, it's about impact, contribution and evolution

that is why Virtua Fighter is on the list.

I love Scorpion, Raiden and Sub-Zero, but the game play is so clunky and constipated and the series is one of the shallowest fighter franchises

Yeah.. and again, that's why I said that MK should have been in..even if it was at the bottom of the list..:) (starting the whole ESRB thing, the fact that the latest games are still under the eyes of some senators, the movies/series, etc..)

But the thing is that they are talking about franchises that are important and that have contributed something to gaming, and that they are excited about future titles... and yet...
They recently rated the newest Sonic game under 5.0...and the previous games has just been average at best...if it wasn't for the handheld Sonic games which are still good.

Donkey Konga and Jungle Beat didn't caused or made the DK franchise what it is today (it was the classic games that did it)..

That last Chrono game was released nealry a decade ago (Chrono Cross)..

Sim?? Dungeons & Dragons?? Mega Man?? All classic games that were important back then, they still are..but thanks to the fnabase and the impact of the old games, not the prospect of upcoming titles...

They shoud have called the list...'Our Recent Top 25 Games That We Like" or "Top 25 Fan Favorite Games"....

Wasteland should have been at number 1...

A.Final Fantasy should've been #1

B. Stop bitching about the Chrono series making the list. Chrono Trigger is the greatest game ever created, easily the best of it's generation, and Chrono Cross just may be the best to come out of the 32/64 bit era as well.

The one that gets me is Tetris. Everyone likes Tetris, sure, but there've been stinkers made under the brand, and I didn't realize anyone hotly anticipated new Tetris games. "Oh man, when's Tetris coming out!??!!?!?"

Halo, as has been mentioned, is a notable no-show, and I'm surprised how low Grand Theft Auto is on the list.

Not really.. and when did it become a franchise... seems like Square pretty much buried it..

Whoopie another list. :) It's pretty trendy for the "critics" and gaming "journalists" to slap around the Halo franchise like a red headed step child. Halo 3 is bigger than any game coming for any franchise on that list with the possible exception of GTA IV :).

Wow. Even if you abhor the Halo series to deny it had a huge impact on the Xbox brand and consequently the course of the console industry these past few years is a bit...insane?

It reminds me of a poster on this forum who, in a thread about the worst tv shows ever, picked Seinfeld. Seriously, you can only go for so much shock value before you start to look a bit rediculous.

Before I clicked this thread, I said to myself: "If the list contains Final Fantasy on it to any measure, it's shit."

Looks like I was right.

I'd ask you to defend your position, but asking people to do the impossible simply isn't fair.

The series has been around for 20 years, sold extraordinarily well, and been a critic's darling. It has had some rather profound impacts on the console landscape too, as we all know.

See, that's the thing. To echo the post I just made, how can any gamer deny the impact FF has had on video games? It's a huge freakin' franchise, whether you go by fanbase, popularity, or sales.

How can any serious list about "top" game franchises not include Final Fantasy? =|

Soooo soooo true.

I agree that Halo should be on the list. I'm not the biggest fan of the series, but if not for Halo it's very possible that the 360 wouldn't even exist today.

There are quite a few games that I don't like... but I know how important they are to video games and to say "FF sux y iz it on da list?" is just kind of short sighted..

I love it how they mentioned Lara Croft, Mario and Madden and to find out that the Tombraider series ain't on the list.

Castlevania shouldn't even approach the top 5 list.

Why not? CV has been around as long as Metal Gear, Mario, and Zelda. CV has spawned a huge amount of great games and even boasts one of the greatest of all time in its collection.

Anyways, LMAO @ Chrono.

Castlevania being above metroid is just wrong and that's just the beginning of the problems.

Edit//decided to list a few others..

No Halo?

GTA should be higher

Sonic should be higher than tom clancy or D&D.

Chrono should not be there at all. (really tom clancy is questionable as well)

sim should be higher, resident evil should be much lower and MGS should be a little lower.

I actually like the top 5. However I also know my tastes don't equate to the top 5 series of all time. Chrono being on there is idiotic. I'd also like to see Silent Hill somewhere on there.

No Dragon Quest, no Diablo...

Well the franchises mentionned aren't bad, but the order in which they're placed is laughable.

This is a list of top 25 franchises

There's two Halo games, just like there's two Chrono games...(no Radical Dreamers doesn't count, and IGN probably doesn't even know of its existence anyway)

This list is just messed up, and doesn't make much sense.

The fact that Halo is missing would have been okay if it wasn't for the fact that Chrono is on the list.

WTF where is halo!

Yeah, definitely a strange omission. Especially considering that Master Chief is on the freaking front graphic for the story, every other character up there made the list. They probably just left Halo out on purpose to rile some fanboys up.

As far as RPG franchises go, Phantasy Star and Dragon Quest would've been far, far, far more worthy inclusions than Chrono.

I think the list is OK. Its become habitual for us to shit on IGN. Halo isn't internationally popular as it is in the US. Ok it did 1.5mil each (1 & 2) in EU (nearest 0.5), but like 5mil in US. I mean nobody really talks about it, and speaking in terms of evolving gaming, it wasn't anything new. It just did established concepts well. And was the mascot for Microsoft. And Mascots always do well. You could argue about Chrono, but that hardly makes it a bad list. And I think they just wanted to pay their respects.

Eh, if they're talking about favorite franchises, I understand. But this is importance of franchises. How the hell is crap like Tom Clancy on there? We will still be where we are if the Tom Clancy franchises didn't exist.
