IGN: Why Are Some IGN Readers Passing on Xbox One?

I was going to buy an Xbone for TitanFall and Destiny.

But then I rememebered I can get TitanFall on PC, and Destiny on PS3.

I don't...really need...a next gen console right now when I have a pretty great PC.

Huh, I'm very curious how this will play out in reality.

I do think MS needs to get out there and start explaining the systems features to the masses. But they will probably wait closer to launch, get too detailed now and mist will just forget by launch.

The more I think about it, the more I like some features like tv passthrough. As I watch tv right now, I can imagine telling the Xbox to launch a game... Seems pretty handy.

Dosnt Sony have more FPS exclusives these days??

Based on what we know, it's basically Halo vs Killzone going into next generation. If you don't have a high end PC, then Titanfall is at least a timed exclusive.

Everything else is assumed dead or is third person.

TitanFall is projected to be available on the PS3 one year after it's formal release.

I even read it wrong at first glance, I was like "wow this is the first poll that shows results this close"

Then I actually read it closer!

The difference ->

43% said they will not buy an Xbox One whatsoever. 39% altogether will choose to either get it at launch or by the end of the first year. That's total!
41% said they will buy a PS4 at launch; and 39% of additional respondents said within the first year. So, roughly 80% of all respondents plan to buy the PS4.

So 39% in total plan to get an Xbox One by the end of the first year; something like 80% plan on getting the PS4 within the first year.

Xbox One -> 39%
PS4 -> 80%
That's quite the disparity.

I'm still wondering how much all of this will translate to the mass market.

Being weaker than PS4 should be #1. MS wanted the Kinect garbage in all SKUs so they made a weaker console. If not for Kinect, its possible we would have gotten a 2-3+ TFLOPS system, but noooo....

Seriously doubt that; something tells me MS would not focus on power either way, and at the very least would've just dropped a pair of Forzeta glasses into the console to replace Kinect (which, in all honesty, would justify the system for me).

Projected by whom? NeoGAF? :)

It's all speculation at this point, though I'd agree that it's likely to appear on PS4 (not necessarily PS3) at some point in the future (barring any exclusivity language that we're not privy to).

Just pulling some numbers out of my ass here I think eventually we'll see PS4 sell >140m units, the Xbox One around 70m units and the Wii U 50m units or less.

I also think we'll see a 5 year lifetime for the Xbone before the Xbox 4 is revealed(probably around the same time as the Wii V will launch) and the PS5 will come a year later.

I owned a 360 and Wii this generation, but I'm going PS4 and skipping XBone next. Why? Price. Why the fuck would I pay $100 more for weaker hardware. The clusterfuck with DRM hasn't helped either though.

At the end of the day there's no overcoming that the One is weaker and more expensive. It's key features - camera, voice recognition and smartglass are completely unimportant to those surveyed according to that graph, so there's no useful tradeoff as of yet with their Kinect gamble. Time will tell I guess, but the IGN reader audience has had several years to make up their minds on Kinect already. I doubt that making it slightly more accurate will fundamentally change the perception of what is being offered.

That leaves them with $100 more for the weaker machine so that you can play one or two exclusives in a market that is almost completely multiplatform. It's a hard sell. Halo 5 will need to be absolutely amazing. On top of that they'd better hope that the on paper power difference, coupled with the scalability of modern engines doesn't leave them with inferior versions of the multiplatform games that will make up the majority of the content people will be playing.

If 80% of the core audience do pick up a PS4 while only 39% get a One, we'll see what kind of tastemaking effect that has. I feel that it must be important, people go where their friends are, and given the complete lack of backwards compatibility next gen is a mostly clean slate. I could be wrong though.

Yep instead we got this for $100 extra:

PS4-and-Xbox-One-GPU.jpg

Man, the PS4 is twice as good as the Xbone in some regards.

Let's put it plainly: will PlayStation owners ever see Titanfall?

"It's definitely not out of the question," Emslie replied. "We have a huge appreciation for the fans. Coming out and showing it to everybody, we're super nervous and wanted to make sure everybody loved it. We love all our fans, whatever console they support.

I really doubt it. ~90 million units is my expectation.

Say "bomb" to meet the police is the new press X to awesome.

Price, Kinect, tvtvtv turned me off. Microsofts own PR made sure I aint touching it, ever.

Unless it gets Dark souls 3 as an exclusive.

J/k not even then

Higher Price, Weaker Specs, Forced Kinect, Traditionally the weakest exclusives = Pass

Don't see that changing for a long time

IGN likes the clicky

Can't wait until the smoke clears next spring and we get to see what really happened

If the PS4 install base is as big as I think it might be, could really change the console ecosystem

Probably be full of all those annoying 12 year olds though

Personally, I don't really see any surprises in these poll results. I have said it before, obviously the people who visit sites like gaf and ign, aka typical gamers, are going to pick the ps4 over the x1. What I am interested in is the casual/mass market adoption of each console.

I guarantee you mom, dad, grandma and aunt aren't going to care that the first party ps4 titles will look better than the first party x1 titles. They also aren't going to care that buying a ps4 is the "cool" thing to do in the gamer world. They will see a $100 price difference and might be swayed by that, but on the other hand, they will see the all of the tv features/multimedia function of the x1 and realize they are getting much more than a singular gaming device, like the ps4.

Personally, it all comes down to the games for me. No first party Sony titles look that interesting to me. Sure, Uncharted is awesome but after three games I am pretty much Uncharted out. Infamous looks pretty cool but not $60 cool. On the other hand, the x1 will project spark (can't freaking wait for this!), quantum break, titanfall, dead rising 3, ryse (meh i'm holding out but it has potential), halo and whatever else that isn't announced or that I am forgetting.

I didn't know the Xbox One is going to cost $100 more than the PS4. Without knowing all the facts, that seems like an incredibly bad move. Way to compete.

I will never again play a first person shooter on a PS3 controller unless it's Destiny.
That's OK becuse the DS4 is leaps and bounds better than the current controller.

That's quite the rock you've been under for the past month plus.

Oh yeah, they're going to see all of those extra features they didn't already have like on screen guides and changing the TV channel. TV will never be the same.

"It's not out of the question" and "It will be out a year later" are entirely different things. Almost any third party developer would say "it's not out of the question" when someone asks "Is this game possible on ____ platform?" It's PR speak.

Sony has the best next gen exclusive for me personally.

No forced shitty camera.

Huh, you have Kinect 2? Let me know how it is.

This was an IGN poll.
I just reffering to the comments here. I'm actually very conflicted about which console to get first. The Xbox has a better launch line up but the ps4 has a better price and is more powerful. Sony has a bad track record with me in the ps3 era of putting out sub par games honestly without naughty dog there wasn't much of a reason to own a ps3. Sony does seem to be more reminiscent of the the ps1 ps2 days with this launch. I'm also conflicted because I know I will be very sad if when the next halo releases I won't have an Xbox. The Xbox will no doubt have a better UI and honestly the kinect functionality is very desirable. Sony really needs to show some games that are desirable for me quickly cause so far it doesn't look very good.

You think moms dads and grandmas are going to buy a $500 Xbox One to have under the TV in addition to the Cable/Sat box so that they can check their fantasy team and swap channels, but not play/record content from their PVR?

Not everyone already has on screen guides. Plus, who cares if they already have an on screen guide. A majority of Gaf will probably buy a next gen console at launch even though they already have a ps360. Just because someone already has something doesn't mean they won't purchase something else that basically does the same thing.

I have no idea what moms, dads and grandmas will do but I do think most of gaf is ignorantly projecting their x1 views on the casual market and assuming that because they think the x1 has pointless features the casual market must as well.

Lol you think that mom, Dad and Grandparents give a shit about the extra tv functionality even though their dvr can do that already? all they care about is that little Timmy is happy with his friends and that will be on the cheaper box

Yeah unless little Timmy says he wants an x1 and dad sees that it can do all of the tv/fantasy dudebro stuff and mom sees she can use the kinect for some workout something and other.

I'm not a fan of the "what the casuals think talk" but I think 'grandmas and soccer moms (tm)' would actually take that into consideration if they see one console have a better reception. The price trumps all though.

I don't get this line of thinking. (Not your line of thinking, Microsoft's.) Microsoft has always had the most powerful console since their original Xbox. Sorry difficult-to-develop-on PS3, but the Xbox platform has been synonymous with the best graphics on multiplat games since day one. I have no idea why they thought it was a good idea to cede that bullet point to Sony, who has never had the technical superiority in specs that could be easily leveraged into the games.

Back to PS2 days it is, lovely. Europe and Asia are already locked down, and there's a strong strong possibility that PS4 will replace 360 in the U.S.

I expected Xbox to sell less than 360.

CBoaT still owes me a new Prince of Persia game, so he's in the doghouse right now.

You are free to believe what you want - I just don't see a good reason why Titanfall would remain xbox console exclusive given the history with xbox console exlusives in general and EA ones in particular...

oh and btw - cboat apologized for pop ;-)

I really think the ps4 is the best console out there objectively but I almost feel stuck with the Xbox because of my love for competitive shooters and mostly halo. In the end it's about the games. If the price was the same it would be an easier choice. I'm just gonna have to get both as quickly as possible this time around.

That's just evil.

I have no doubt TitanFall could see PS3, my note was just on the certainty of it being a 1 year exclusive when nothing of the sorts was said. I hope it lands on all platforms eventually.

The same reason we buy any gaming systems - to play games.

That's why I'm buying both day one and even eventually will get a Wii U.
