IGN: Why Are Some IGN Readers Passing on Xbox One?

You kidding? They've done nothing. They just stood back and let MS shoot themselves in the foot......repeatedly.

Things like making game development easier and having a reasonable price point are actually easy to see as improvements for Sony. It would have been a benefit for them with or without MS' troubles.

Do you want to stick by the 'they've done nothing' stuff or do you want another patented Amir0x bulletpointed list of how you're wrong? :P

I haven't seen it, so enlighten me. As far as I have seen, Sony has only played on the missteps of Microsoft. Sony and MS seemed to have reversed roles from last gen.

The only way that I'll agree with you is that they literally changed nothing from the PS3 > PS4 as far as DRM is concerned and got a HUGE pop at E3 for announcing it. And if I remember correctly, it was just after they announced that multiplayer would be behind a paywall.

However, they've made a ton of great decisions in a lot of other areas that are legitimately deserving of applause. The vitriol for Microsoft is not just born out of Microsoft's poor decisions and communication, but also out of a steady slide downwards of Microsoft's relationship with the core gamer.

It worked for the short term as Kinect sold a ton and they further increased their lead over the PS3 in the US and UK (while almost maintaining parity worldwide). However, I think their quest for the casual gamer has caused them to lose a chunk of their core and come into this next generation well behind the eight ball in a ton of different areas. Thankfully, they invested a lot into 1st/2nd party that will hopefully help offset the general negativity because in the end, it always comes down to the games.

Think of it this way, two people go to an interview one's messaging is all wrong and confusing and the others just stays simple by talking less. Who you going to hire?

Tough decision here!

This reminds me of my tactics for meeting girls back in the day. My best friend would talk to anyone and while he was charmingly goofy, he talked so much that all of the girls would be more interested in the quiet, mysterious guy in the corner, wanting to know what he had to say. That actually worked. Multiple times. And there might have been hot tubs involved.

That's a good parallel for your comparison.

However, the parallel to the next gen consoles is not so accurate in numerous ways, not the least of which is that the PS4 is a more qualified candidate.

Probably reiterating what's been said already, but my reasons for getting the PS4 over the Xbone are:

  • Price
  • More powerful
  • No camera / Kinect
  • No paywall on Netflix, etc
  • PS+ free games
  • I don't trust Microsoft

Biggest argument for this would be whether or not Sony playing to gamers is them playing off of MS missteps or not as that's such a big part of their advertising and philosophy for the PS4

The greatness awaits commercial is a good example but sony has been doing stylized and live-action commercials for a long time now

Knowing how to best communicate is a skill, not some passive given you don't have to think about.

Face it, Sony learned some lessons and found a balance that improved the situation for their base. They earned that and it did take effort.

No.

The results you see are what people (who said they are not buying an Xbox One) value most when deciding their next-gen purchase.

Price, exclusive games and graphics. Those are top three. No surprise.

Blu Ray is 8th on the list, which apparently is more important to them than playing online.

I'm shocked backwards compatibility is so low.

I think it says a lot about the people who are participating in these surveys.

I'm surprised there wasn't an option for symmetrical analog sticks and it wasn't number 4.

Yea, the included headset, the much improved looking controller, the price, unified memory. All that took effort and it pleases my greatly that they did that regardless of how good or bad the Xbox One is. I'm not getting an Xbox One at launch, but I think it's awesome that they put rumble in the triggers. It sounds good and it took effort. How can this Mike guy be so silly?

Hmm you have to put it in laymen's terms though for a survey like that

Most casuals probably don't understand Asymmetrical vs symmetrical analog sticks

They do understand controller feel/design etc.

Blu-ray is not nearly as important a factor as it was last gen as its so very prevalent now

BC should be higher though

IGN did a survey which controller their voters liked more. I think it got 70k responses for that specific question and the DS4 won.

I just watched the "Greatness Awaits" trailer. They are putting effort into gaining and keeping an audience for themselves, but they have been doing stuff like this for years.

Maybe I'm not expressing my thoughts well enough.... I think I'm trying to say that Sony isn't trying anything "new" or "interesting" to talk about. They're just giving people like me more of the same. Almost all of the features they've talked about, besides heavy indie game support, will fall on the back burner for me. This opinion is probably not a widely shared one, though.

Wow, some of you are either too close to this, or have really poor judgement.

Or is it more fashionable to quote the definition of "nothing"?

I await the destruction.

I suppose if nothing interests you about the PS4 then the advertising isn't going to be worth a damn

What about the X1 appeals to you most then?

I could understand if you value the kinect, I don't personally but MS's policy on kinect has the best chance of turning out a good kinect game

Still find it unlikely for the reason Amir0x gave

I know what you're getting at. I think it would be more accurate like this though:

You manage two employees who built consumer products, and have to decide to let one go;
Employee One:
1) designed a product and assumed the general public would be on board with radical changes since the previous product, knowing the general consumer is used to how things have been for as long as they can remember.
2) Forces purchase of what is seen as an add on item. The design of the main product requires that this item is purchased, and at least, powered on to use it. This is again, proving point in 1)
3) The costs of the combined products are higher than the competition, and are documented to not be as, I'll use powerful for lack of analogy
4) The employee constantly tries to explain their thought process, but cannot clearly do so. Sales are, at least initially, lost.

Employee Two:
1) Builds a product which is more powerful, and easier to work with, and seems to embrace the what the existing customer base expects the product to do
2) Addresses existing product concerns from previous generation product in design
3) Can clearly explain thought processes(easy to explain because it was not radically changing the game, and everyone on board understood the message)
4) sales are gained due to the reasons above

Which employee do you keep?

I exaggerated with the "nothing". Point was, Sony didnt have to do much with MS shooting themselves in the foot every 2 seconds.

Even so, they asked gamers and devs wheat they wanted out of a new console, and for the most part gave it to them. That's not by any means nothing, and a TOTAL changeup from PS3.

So much so that they are acquiring former 360 players left and right.

MS definitely helped them with the foot shooting thing. But they've been working on designing this console with developer input since 2008. It's the furthest thing from "doing nothing" out there. And honestly MS is shooting themselves in the foot because they are the ones that didn't prepare properly. They are the ones that got caught with their pants down not doing enough to prepare for next gen when Sony unveiled 8GB GDDR5 and a $399 price point.

Not passing on xb1 because:

-Exclusives
-Much better launch lineup and yr 1 lineup
-Stronger dedication to MP
-Seems to be a better Entertainment device for the living room
-Kinect 2.0 voice navigation
-Seems to be trying to do something new instead of rehashing last gen with better visuals
-Hbo Go and other exclusive apps

What's with Titanfall that many people are trying so hard to make it sound like a huge game that can't be replaced??? Destiny looks far better and more interesting to me! Also SONY makes the best exclusives ever and this is a fact!

Incomplete Data Set Confirmed; 25-30% of first year PS4 titles revealed versus 85-90% of first year Xbox One titles revealed

You understand this is all opinion based right? The guy said exclusives and multiplyer. Maybe he likes MS better for both.

It's not a fact. It's a preference.

You can argue that this preference is shared because I think last time I checked there hasn't been a year that Microsoft Game Studios had a higher publisher score rating over Sony in our yearly game of the year process.

This guy is a child molester. Why does the internet love him. Makes me feel dirty just looking at this.
Wow.

Yes. And this is a place to discuss opinions and also point out why some of them may be misguided or why you may agree with that opinion. Were you confused about how these conversations worked?

All these misguided youths. Good thing you are here. :)

Also IGN kinda sucks for all these click bate articles all summer :(

Wow.

lol I know it's not really a fact but you know what I meant and said it better :)

I'm personally interested in the PS4, and not the X-1.

Wha?

I just think of him as the creepier looking Jim Carrey.

It would do him a lot of good if he combed his hair to the side or something.

When you think about it, take away Microsoft's several missteps and the PS4 is the worst reveal in history. I mean what did they really do.

Embraced developmental challenges facing the developer which drove some away from their previous console, and worked to reverse the previous issues. Designed a product which more powerful at a lower price point which also embraced existing console market structure(did not rock the boat).

He definitely needs to cut the hair. Then stop moving his lip and hands like a creepy old guy. He disturbed me at the reveal in Feb. Can't bring myself to watch him in video format since. I hear he made marble madness and was involved in old school sonic. must be a cool guy.
