IGN's The Orange Box Review (ps3)

Because even a lazy 8-week-old port of Orange Box is still a better game than a great 2-week-old port of UT3.
(Ok. Fine. Actually a lack of mouse support in Orange Box might mean they're about on par.)

I think everyone should play Orange Box, but I can't honestly recommend someone sit through 17 second loads to play Portal. That would just be frustrating as hell.

Zzoram said:
you think UT3 is better than Orange Box? Orange Box has gotten unanimously better reviews (on PC where they both are released) and is a serious GOTY contender, whereas UT3 doesn't even come to mind when talking GOTY.

On PC yes, on PS3 no. According to IGN the framerate is terrible in certain areas of the game, sorry but that's unacceptable. On the PS3 UT3 has been getting better reviews.

Well, we don`t know how much money was involved, but I don`t see why Sony would put the money in if they didn`t expect it to sell well. I suppose they got a usable version of UE from it, which is one thing. They need to make smarter choices, because they have poured money into games and aren't seeing much back (first party and moneyhats), whereas the "niche" titles like bioshock that MS is buying up are selling.

The difference seems to be that

a) Microsoft is advertising their exclusives better
b) Xbox 360 user base has a voracious appetite for decent to great games

If you won't you'll have no right to bitch about Uncharted or R&C5 bombing.

No fucking right.

At all.

But...they each only have one released review.

Even the poor optimization can't give this game an awful score though. I can't recommend this package more to people though. If PS3 is your only means to play it then hit it up.

My favorite shooter of the year by far, and it surpassed my expectations with every single game in the box.

The Orange Box is an amazing game collection. Make no mistake about it. If youve never played HL2 you owe it to yourself.

If the only thing you have is a PS3 then I'd say go for it. If you have a capable PC or a 360 then go for those versions, the issues IGN brings up in their review sound game-breaking (when they happen).

I am really surprised about Ratchet and Uncharted bombing, considering that they are solid games, technically impressive, and PS3 exclusives. Poor PS3 sales were previously attributed to games being timed Xbox 360 exclusives or shoddy ports so fans were boycotting.

I agree people should play portal, but seventeen seconds respawn? How much pain does it take before it's not worth it?

You'd have to really suck if it becomes THAT big of an inconvenience.

I would buy it so EA continues supporting PS3, also theres a chance, if the game sells well, to patch it.

In spain the PS3 version is the only one that has an awesome spanish dub. The 360 version isn't even subbed in spanish. So in spain PS3 version is the superior one.

Ill pick UT3. Dont care about solo mode, and TF2 console is shit online. After COD4 i need solid online play

UT isn't a console seller, it never has been. The versions on consoles in the past haven't sold well, the game is simply too fast paced for the controls.

What moneyhat are you talking about? It's being released for the 360 in the future, it's just that online options and modding are more open on the PS3.

A lot of PS3 owners I've talked to have never played a UT title and think that this is Epic's next Gears of War. UT is UT. It's storyline/singleplayer is unmentionable, unless you're talking about UT'99's bots.

.

Yeah, that's definitely the real reason it's on PS3 first.

Yeah, Sony skipped out on GTA4 and DMC4 to moneyhat console UT. That's brilliant strategy right there.

They must've paid Capcom something to have the lockon be mapped to Right Bumper instead of Right Trigger, even though the games press consistently tells them to fix it :lol

I'm not telling you it's true, because I don`t know, but given the circumstances, I believe it more likely that money was involved than "the modding options are better". People are in business to make money, especially Epic.

I don't know man, I think that's more the corporate culture. Sony thinks they can have a wide open online like the PC and think they can handle the inevitable abuses on Home and mods. Microsoft is paranoid about lawsuits so they are keeping their system tight as a clam to prevent problems, and even then people managed to make swastika Forza 2 cars and show their balls over Uno and yell racist slurs over the headset. Nintendo, they are even more paranoid than Microsoft. They won't let you talk to your friends, know their name, or see them.

Console is a whole different animal than PC. At least on PC, you can't blame the platform owner for not filtering, since you can't filter the Internet for PC game mods. On a console, they could potentially be liable.

I think that more than likely they were trying to adapt UE3 decently for the PS3 and UT3 was convenient as the platform to build it on, along with the more open Sony network and Microsoft's strict control regarding content for Gears of War. I'm sure there's something else there, but it's not much.

I played it on my computer at 10 fps. I still play TF2 at the same frame rate. Any PS3 owner should be happy with this game

There are a surprising number of people with garbage PCs that just play the great games anyways. I used to be one of them, when my PC was trash. I played Halo 1 on lowest everything, 640x480 on my GeForce 2mx (the slowest one) and it still didn't run smooth. For comparison, the Xbox 1 had a GeForce 3. It was my first 3D first person shooter and I only played it because regenerating shields covered for my lack of skills.

I also played the World of Warcraft beta on my GeForce 2mx with 256mb SD RAM and Pentium 4 1.8ghz.

Have IGN claimed that HL2 is a port of the Xbox version, like they did with the 360 Orange Box, or have they learned their lesson?

I got more like 15-25fps on my PC, and random crashes about every 2 hours.
Still the best game I've played in a long time.

I'm thinking of buying the PS3 or 360 version for better graphics, though. The positive thing about the PS3 is mostly PSN, while the 360 has the better single-player game.

Sadly, they didn't support m/k on PS3, so I'll probably grab the 360 version.

Yeah, but UE already ran on 360. And Gears made a bucketload of money for Epic, so why piss off MS by not making your next game for their platform when it would have been a breeze to port? Lets be honest, a 360 port without mod support could have come out at pretty much the same time as the PC version.

neat. My point is, the PS3 version should be more than playable. Not optimal, but far from shitty

I believe that Sony struck a deal with Epic, to try to get the game out before Christmas, it might not have been a direct money hatz deal though, maybe providing engineers or discounting on Sony's cut. What ever happened it resulted in the 360 version being put on th eback burner

Hmm good point. We know from numerous developers that PC to 360 is pretty much an overnight job.

I'm pretty sure Sony paid for a UT3 exclusive because they needed Epic to make a UE3 game work on PS3 properly, and knew that that was the incentive they needed to do it.

The funny thing is that this also ensures that UT3 will sell even better on 360 than if it came out simultaneously, as Spring will be far enough from Halo3/CoD4 to give it breathing room.

Green apples are too acid, I don't like them. Also, I think the 360 version was decent only, the PC version even on medium settings still looked better on my PC. Not that I tried all of the games, I am just talking about HL2 here.

Well, if it results in better PS3 ports of UE3 games, it may well be worth it.

The 360 version of HL2 looks better than the PC version. It has motion blur and HDR lighting.

That's what I figure Sony was thinking. It's a big deal paying for UT3 if it means UE3 games will work on PS3, as it seems like every other game now is UE3.

Ya, the 360 version of HL2 got upgrades while the PC version is still the same as it was in 2004. However, if you have an amazing PC (read: 8800 or similar), the rest of Orange Box will look better on PC.

So is EA just incapable of proper PS3 games, or is it just impossible to properly port PC/360 code to PS3?

The loading time issue could absolutely be fixed.

Framerate problems could be fixed, but would take longer probably. If valve had done it, it would be the equal of the 360 version, I`m sure of that.

the problem is that EA won`t spend the money to get a polished product, only to get it "just good enough". 50K difference in sales on the PS3 version probably won`t hurt them too much.

Zzoram said:

The former.

PS3 should have no fucking problems in running 360 ports or 4-year old PC ports given the right amount of porting time and resources.

This case seems like a shitty, quick-port job.

BUT IT STILL IS WORTH IT FOR PORTAL ALONE

BTW I get 10-12 loading times in Portal elevator on my 3-year old laptop so take it as you will. Long-ass loading times and DX8 effects only (no pixel-shaded glass and portals) did not take away anything from my Portal enjoyment.

Portal is the best original game in YEARS.

No PS3-only owner should miss it.

Perhaps, but from what Gabe was saying, it sounds like Valve didn't even want to make a PS3 version and EA did the port because they wanted it.
