It'll be a damn travesty if Alan Wake doesn't make this list. Nier belongs on it just for the story and soundtrack alone. Also waiting for Valkyria Chronicles, Binary Domain, and Bulletstorm.

I'm sorry but I find this post so ironic. He can't call it "terrible" even if that is his opinion? It's rather a perfect example of "there are no wrong opinions" IMO. It would be another thing if he was analysing the game for a review objectively or something and then ignoring everything it dows right. You can objectively call a game "great" but still think it is shit personallym there is nothing wrong in that.

You really can't see the difference between statements "I don't like game X" and "game X is terrible"? I completely disagree with the bolded part of your post - if you call a game great and think it's shit, and can't see anything weird or wrong about that, then I just... I don't even.
I can totally see why people put Heavy Rain on GOTG lists, even if I personally don't care about a single thing about it. I did not enjoy Dishonored all that much, but I won't say it's a shit game, because I can totally see all the things it does right, I'm just overall not a fan of the genre.

You can go out during a heavy hailstorm and say "the weather is great", but then your opinion is factually wrong, simply put.

... I can't tell if you're being serious or not. The word "great" is a subjective term and usually it needs to describe why it's being great. If he was an insurance claim adjuster he may think that the "weather is great" during a hailstorm because that means he's going to make some business. So for him it can be factually true that the weather is great.

However, this opinion is vastly different than most people's definition of the word "great". I think the same thing applies true in video games. Someone can think that a game is "great" if they have evidence that supports their definition of "great".

Also, Heavy Rain is pretty "meh".

#95 Vanquish
#90 Unfinished Swan
#87 Sleeping Dogs
#75 Heavy Rain
#66 God of War III
#64 Flower

Can't believe these aren't in the top 50.

I believe that Call of duty 4: MOdern Warfare will be #1.

You can't ignore the impact this game has done to this industry

Wow, how many better RPGs were there than Xenoblade? or are there just no JRPGs in the top 50?

Especially versus the even higher ranking Ni no Kuni.

See, I wonder if this list is taking into account the time and impact when they were released, or is this list simply a list of "games we'd rather play over this one" without taking into account that sequels have improved the quality of past titles in the series.

Well, my example may not have been spot on (even though the exception you found, if perfectly valid, is a rather rare case and a rather narrow point of view, isn't it?), but I hope you can see the point I was making. It might work in context, like "the weather is great for business" (or "this game is shit as far as story is concerned"), but as long as the guy is outside and hail is bombarding his head, he's still going to run for shelter.

Heavy Rain is "meh" in a lot of ways, but it certainly tried to explore some ideas rarely seen in videogames, and if "innovation" was one of IGN's criteria for their GOTG list, I can see why they put it there. Even if it irks me a bit, personally.

Xenoblade and Shadow Complex are way too low. Top 20 at worst. Arguably top 10.

I love Studio Ghibli and Level 5, but Ni no Kuni was not a great game by any means sadly.

ahahahhahahahhahahhaha at Demon Souls so low in the list, anyone that played through it knows it was at least in Top 10 for last gen.

I played it, surprisingly didn't absolutely hate it, but didn't like it that much. Maybe my fault, because I played Dark before I went to Demon's. I'd say Dark improved almost everything from its predecessor, and I don't even consider Dark to be more than 8/10. I'm pretty sure there are plenty with me, the Souls fan-base is just extremely vocal. I'm not going to say 88th place is justified, but it certainly ain't top 10 of last gen in my book. Top 40 would do it more justice, Dark in top 20.

I know the number ranking system is kinda of arbitrary and meaningless, and it becomes even more evident when the games are just one ranking away, but even so putting Xenoblade Chronicles (arguably the best JRPG of the generation) at #80 one space lower that Call of Duty: Black Ops, a series that makes the absolute minimum changes to every yearly iteration and just hopes you buy it because your friends will just seems to be a in poor taste choice by IGN.

60. Uncharted 3

44. Gears of War 3
43. Trials Evolution
42. Mirror's Edge
41. Spelunky

Well, nice to see LittleBigPlanet and Mirror's Edge.

But I've lost pretty much all hope of Vlakyria Chronicles and R&C: A Crack in Time even showing up. Either that, or IGN has them ranked surprisingly high (in a good way).

this list is a joke.

Look I'm happy that Catherine is on here, it's one of my favorite games, but for it to beat Demon's Souls and for Demon's Souls to be so low on this list, below forgettable games like Dishonored and God of War III is just ridiculous. It's one of the most important games of last gen, and its influence will last well into the current one if not longer.

GOW3 is anything but forgettable. It should be in the top 30.

ahahahhahahahhahahhaha at Demon Souls so low in the list, anyone that played through it knows it was at least in Top 10 for last gen.

I vastly prefer Dark Souls over it. Actually I rate Dark Souls 2 above Demon's Souls too. To me, Demon's Souls is around where it should be on the list. I played all three in the past year and a half so I wasn't there day 1 for Demon's Souls (but then, neither was anyone else considering the long delays between continents in launch schedule.)

But opinions. Just wanted to say that there's plenty of people who played Demon's Souls and don't consider it top 10 of last gen, not even close.

I know there's gonna be a lot of people all upset because their favorite game is ranked lower than some game they don't like...

..but this list just highlights how great last gen was in a lot of ways.

So many great games over the last 7 or 8 years.

Instead of celebrating a generation full of great games we are getting angry over number placements on a list. Obviously when they put one game three slots below another, they are saying that the game is shit and a lesser game than one above it.

60-41

#60 Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception
#59 Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
#58 Infamous 2
#57 LittleBigPlanet
#56 FEZ
#55 Bayonetta
#54 FIFA 12

#47 Dragon Age: Origins
#46 Dark Souls 2
#45 Super Meat Boy
#44 Gears of Wars 3
#43 Trials Evolution
#42 Mirror's Edge
#41 Spelunky

FIFA 12 is great, it helped solidify the game and really propelled it to being one of the best and biggest series in gaming today. Should be higher up.

I really liked Mirror's Edge and am very much looking forward to the sequel. But having said that, it is ranked WAY too favorably in this list.

And I know MGS 4 gets a lot of slack, but I would have expected it to be at a much lower number.

In short, this list is weird.
