IGN's Top 9 Christopher Nolan movies

Awesome post. Does the ranking really matter? In my eyes he has never really done a bad film. One of the few directors that I will see anything they release day one, no trailer needed.

He takes crazy ideas and uses pretty large budgets to see them come to life. We need more directors and studios taking chances with their movies, and even biting off a little more than they can chew sometimes. I don't want perfect movies. I want unforgettable movies.

Not at all. I nitpick the hell out of his movies sometimes but he's a great director that makes great movies. He doesn't make "bad" movies, just movies that you happen not to like.

3. Inception

I think I'd switch TDK with The Prestige, but then again I pretty much hold all the top 4 in an almost equally high regard so it's a really hard call for me.

Interstellar below TDKR tho?

Haven't seen Interstellar yet but from what I have heard from friends is that it's pretty off and on. And overall pretty disappointing.

ffs, if you're going to give your 2 cents, at least do it from a valid standpoint.

I don't have a problem with people not liking the film but people who do the "he said she said" irk me the most. At least the former group actually did make an effort to produce their own opinion.

Spot on, for the most part. No list is ever going to be 100% perfect with placement, but it lines up with my overall feelings about Nolan. I probably would have put Dark Knight Rises slightly lower. I really think it's a sloppy film by Nolan's standards (needed better editing and scripting). It's a really weird movie in some respects, as it kind of feels like it was rushed, or maybe it had too many people working on it. Nolan usually has higher quality standards (although his past films have had some editing issues).

I think Memento being #1 is fair. Some might think it's overrated. But the screenplay and the execution of that film is very tight and just a really incredible project. I also think Inception should be applauded for that as well. Compared to some of the Dark Knight films (and even Interstellar), I think Inception really has a vision for what it wants to be, and does a really good job crafting it and getting where it needs to by the end. I would probably say, Interstellar might be his best film visually. But kind of falls short with the plot and script.

Inception was terrible. Only movie I've ever walked out of due to the poor story.

Memento is still my favorite. The twist in The Prestige soured me on it despite liking it at the time.

1 - Memento
2 - Prestige
3 - Inception
4 - Insomnia
5 - Interstellar

No batman in my list. Those films are way too overrrated. Specially TDK.

I always find the Prestige love weird in Christopher Nolan threads. It was a good film but I still enjoyed TDK, Memento, and Inception waaaaay more. Still need to see Batman Begins and Insomnia though.

I can't speak to the subjective taste on whether the story is good or bad. But I thought even if you hated the story, Inception had a pretty complete and coherent plot. Although kind of crazy that you almost walked out.

I've seen a lot of bad films, and it's very rare that something is so bad, I want to walk out. That Inception did that for you, is pretty crazy.

No, it's not, don't listen to the snob GAF hate machine. It's the best and pretty much only hard sci-fi blockbuster we've had in forever, the visuals are astounding, the score is fantastic, and performances, although predictable for each actor, were solid.
Most fun I've had at the theatre in ages.

Thats rubbish. I know a fair few people IRL now who have seen interstellar and were very disappointed with it. Its been dividing critics a lot too. Its been said a million times but GAF isn't a hivemind. Its a community of people with opinions.

Anyway Memento would probably be my number one. Its funny I always really enjoy Nolan's films when I'm watching them(except TDKR, that was awful), but the more I think on them afterwards they fall apart for me. None of his ideas seem to hold together. Technically hes very good but his reach seems to exceed his grasp when putting his ideas on screen. I'm going to see Interstellar on saturday so hopefully that will be enjoyable as I'm a massive hard sci-fi fan.

Haha, wow. I wish I had your track record with avoiding terrible movies, then.
It's a dumb story that adds in extravagant gun fights instead of remaining focused on the (bad) premise. I made the mistake of going in blind because of my enjoyment for TDK.

I did walk out. Only other time was due to a girl getting in between a friend and I.

I actually found the story hard to follow in the beginning. Even once it became clearer the "drams in dreams" idea was so laughable I lost interest.

. . . He's only credited as director on 10 films on IMDB and one of them's a short, which notably isn't on this list. It's nitpicky, but it REALLY should've been reflecting what IGN actually billed it as: ranking the Christopher Nolan movies.

My exact thought when I read the thread title, great work IGN...

Come on. This is an incredibly silly and uncharitable criticism of the film.
Dreams in dreams is incredibly silly. I think Nolan was so tickled by the idea of manipulating someone via their dreams he didn't think it through. It ran the movie, not the story. The suspension of disbelief was broken when I considered it a strategy a group of people would toss out for something better.

Maybe I'll finish watching it someday.

Wow, I really liked Inception, but I didn't care for The Prestige, so I guess I won't put much weight into the IGN list with regards to Interstellar.

The only movie I ever really wanted to walk out on was Kill Bill 2. I really liked Kill Bill 1, so not sure why I disliked 2 so much.

thats actually a list i can agree with except for inception being too high

should be near the bottom but above TDKR and interstellar

man i hated interstellar

those are the last three films he made too haha.

i actually enjoyed interstellar though, i'm a sucker for the ideas in this and space in general. and found it less of a chore than inception imo. plus it helps that mcconaughey is the least robotic lead in a nolan movie. first human character he's written.

Interstellar below TDKR is bullshit, it's a much better film overall.

I agree with the top four though, except TDK should be higher than Inception.

My list. Don't particularly care for his others. I also have a lot of issues with Interstellar, but its a good overall experience so will still go on this list.

6. Insomnia
5. Interstellar
4. Inception
3. Memento
2. The Dark Knight
1. The Prestige

I've never seen The Prestige. I guess I have to now. Is it as much as a mindfuck as his other movies?

Not really a mindfuck, but fantastic film all around. You should watch it a few times to catch all the little hints and tidbits.

The only film on that list I haven't seen is the following, I just watched Memento for the first time the other night. Pretty sick too.

I haven't seen Memento but I think I've spoiled it for myself by watching some parodies on the internet.
it would be very hard to properly spoil that movie. its really clever

The only way would be to watch the in sequence edit first. The entire film pretty much exists in the editing, the plot is pretty much irrelevant other than to get you from point b to point a to point c.

It's so great to see The Prestige getting so much love :)
I just love that movie, Nolan's best by far for me, it's such an amazing film.
Just reading this thread makes me want to watch it again.
