I'm really bad at The Witcher 3

GAF, I feel like an idiot, but I need some help. I'd look up a tutorial or guide, but I want to figure most things out on my own, and avoid unnecessary info. But there's one thing I really need help with: how the hell do I heal? I'm in the second area and I'm level 3, but I have no idea how to heal myself. I'm pretty low on gold, if that makes a difference.

Can someone point me in the right direction? Then we can let the thread die and umm hopefully forget about how bad I am at this game. Thanks!

If you're on anything lower than Death March, you can meditate to heal (while not in combat). If you're playing on Death March, you need to use consumables (mostly food).

Edit: Sorry OP, thought that meditating worked on Blood and Broken Bones but apparently I was wrong.

I'm playing on the difficulty above normal. I tried meditation before, and it didn't seem to work, but maybe I just didn't do it long enough. I'll try that, thanks!

Hi dude.

I don't know in which difficulty are you playing but I know you can meditate to heal you in some situations. Look for the option in the menu

Good luck with your travel

It only heals on Easy and Normal.

Swallow potion, food, and drink will all heal you. The Replenishment perk in Alchemy will heal you whenever you drink any potion, but requires a hefty investment and time. There is a perk in the Misc perk area that heals while you are in the sun, but it's fairly bad (read: useless and I don't recommend taking it) past Lvl 8 or so.

When you have your next lvl up. Take the skill "Gourmet" or something like that. One piece of food will recover health for 30 or 40 mins (I don't remember exactly). It's very convenient

There is a skill you should unlock early that regerates Geralt. It is necessary in the beginning when you don't have enough money to craft consumables to heal in and after battle.

Like they said. Out of combat, meditate. In combat, use food or Swallow potion (best solution).

EDIT: Meditation does not work on difficulties above the normal one.

Stock up on food and learn how they affect health regeneration. Basically avoid using water in combat as it is slow as hell.

So Swallow potion is your answer. Remember to upgrade it later in a game.

And for the future: be patient, this is not a hack and slash. Preparation is key for most of the fights in TW3

Spoiler free answer: Swallow potion.

Food and drink on its own is also somewhat useful if you're not in any immediate danger. I myself left Sun and Stars active throughout my playthrough even though it doesn't scale and consequently becomes increasingly useless, haha.

Get the Quen bubble shield that heals you when hit in combat. Use food and swallow potions for health in and out of battle.

On the higher difficulties Geralt doesn't regenerate with meditation. There's a perk you can get that allows Geralt to regenerate health over time while in the sunlight, I find that very helpful, and used in conjunction with swallow potions (which are produced with resources you own, when you meditate.

These swallow potions are produced with strong alcohols, which include Cherry Spirit Cordial, Dwarven Spirit, Plum Cordial, Temerian Spirit, and Zerrikanian, you can buy these from inns but they're also quite abundant in the environment. You can also use food to heal when you need it, but I wouldn't buy any.

I was so proud of myself when I bested the level 48 archgriffin in Skellige at level 30-something. The fight lasted a good 20 minutes or so.

The gourmet perk will be quite helpful. Food heals Geralt for less than 20 seconds normally. With Gourmet the effects last 20 minutes. I find it more useful than sun and stars since it scales better and isn't influenced by the day-night cycle.

Swallow potion and Food is how you heal (Or rather, regen) There is no instant heal besides a late game potion and upgraded Quen.

Everytime you meditate all your potions fill up again (as long as you have alcohol). Which means that everytime you meditate you have 3 swallow potions.

You should have the recipe for the swallow potion in your inventory iirc. Otherwise you can find it in white orchard.

In combat: Swallow (gradual HP replenishment) or White Rafford Decoction (instant heal)

Outside combat: Meditate or eat some food for a very slow gradual heal.

If you're finding it this hard, why on earth are you playing on hard? Just put it on easy. Personally, I found it a lot more pleasurable on that.

Looks like basic mechanics is difficult for him, not actually playing the game. He is lvl 3 with no regeneration, he cant be bad, lol.

Should be fine with just food, ~30 hours into Death March and have only been using food to heal. Use Quen, get good with dodging and the game isn't particularly hard, at least for me so far.

I think when I finished the first area I was level 4, so maybe you aren't exploring enough?

I said this not only because being more leveled up will make it easier, but because exploring you will find more food and beverages, that will heal you a bit. Also, try to find out the ingredients for all the potions you can, two of them have healing effects.
You don't really need to invest the point to make the food regenerate you even more, there is plenty of food in the game, if you explore every house, every container, etc.

Figure out how to craft swallow potions. A youtube guide will be easy to find. You can also consume food to heal but it's very slow. I actually struggled with this when I first started too. The game doesn't make it clear how to heal surprisingly. Even on higher difficulty Geralt will craft more potions after you meditate in the game. You just need a strong alcohol in your inventory which you can buy from merchants and find it through out the world.

I'll add that food also works in combat but only if you equip it to a quick-use slot. Swallow + food provides great in-combat regen.

While in combat eat/drink and use a regen potion at the same time. With both active you will get faster increased regen. And yes you can eat while in combat. It's a trick I learned from the witcher 2.

Unless you want to be replenishing Swallow potions a lot just get the Gourmet perk. It will save you time and allow you to build up a stash of food/drink if you want to unequip it later.

Food, meditation, swallow potion, White Rafford's decoction, other decoctions, Sun and something ability, etc. can all heal you. Remember that meditation also refills all your potions (swallow), so use them as often as you want.

It's a great feeling when that 20 min battle turns into a 10 sec battle once you get OP:

Get the gourmet skill and food heals you for 20 mins so you can have health regeneration for long periods.

I'm guessing you have to have the DLC? I don't see Gourmet listed as an option in any of the ability tabs.

Not having any issues really on Death March and first playthrough of the game. But stumbling upon this thread made me wonder how I could miss such a valuable ability early in the game when food/healing etc. were more of an issue.

Currently at lvl 30 and I tend to use the decoction that heals when you use abilities that drain stamina.

wtf is going on here, why is your sword thrust a twenty foot pillar of fire??

It's an enchantment called "Severance" embedded in the sword. Enchantments can be installed via "Hearts of Stone" expansion from the Runewright.

Man, I've put hours in The Witcher (still finishing up Blood and Wine) but havent even experimented with that kind of stuff.

Use food or water in between fights, and sometimes during them with a swallow to heal even faster.

Meditating does not heal you, but does restock your potions, and chances are you'll never run out of alcohol, especially if you loot everything (which you should do).

Other tips:
Swallow+Thunderbolt+Tawny Oil are the three best potions, and will get you through 90% of encounters.

Use Quen as much as possible. Seriously, you can take on anything with Quen as long as you're careful enough.

Use the right oils for the enemies you fight.

Only use Witcher Gear, with a few exceptions of really OP shit. Witcher Gear is usually the best gear , and Grandmaster crafted is the best armor and swords in the game.

Sorry about forgetting to spoil non-food tips.

Blood and Wine also introduced a new gameplay mechanic called Mutations. One of them is called Piercing Cold and is really fun to use:

Yeah the way witcher 3 handles life regen is quite annoying since its a pain to have to meditate (and potentially spend alocoholest if you used even one potion during previous combat).

The skill sun and stars won't be enought after the first 3-5h. And doing the regen with food becomes a chore VERY fast.

I'm playing on Pc and using this: http://www.nexusmods.com/witcher3/mods/955

For in combat solutions you have shallow potion for regen over time while not being hit and white rafford for instaheal so I think you're covered there.

Load up on meat. There's gonna be a point where you will be able to afford good stuff and be powerful. Just hang in there!
