I'm thinking of moving to Portland.

I've lived in Seattle for 2 years, so that's my point of reference. Portland was fun to visit, and I want to visit again in the future. I was absolutely enamored by Powell's City of Books. And the delicious food trucks. But anyway, the general city culture was pretty unique and kind of lined up with how people say it is. The level of homelessness was overwhelming for me at first, though.

Don't visit SF.

I read the OP as Poland.

I will never forget when I was a kid (10ish maybe?) at the downtown SF burger king. I just got my sweet kid's meal crown, and and old homeless lady asked for it (she had a collection of them, no joke), and I had to give it to her. I was mad about it all day haha

you had to?

I like Portland. It has most of the benefits of Seattle without the downsides (crippling traffic, crime, exorbitant cost of living).

Any city with a large venue for roller derby is a great city in my book and Portland has a huge venue (relatively speaking) for their Rose City girls.

the traffic isn't bad once you know your way around, seattle has very little crime, you get what you pay for.

I have some family that live in the Portland/Vancouver area. I really like it up there. I come from the desert, so the change in weather is nice. I'd like to live there, but I don't think I'm cool enough.

Who cares about sports? (said the University of Oregon graduate.)

I wouldn't care for sports if I went to Oregon either.

having the #2 college football team in town makes up for the management at 1 center court being made up of slow kids.

Until they get the death penalty, sure.

This post is factually accurate. Additionally, we have the best soccer fans in Oregon.

Fixed.

Seattle has no crime. You're looking for Tacoma.

I live in Seattle. Trust me, I'm very aware of its downsides.

so do I, the traffic is offset by the fact that most of the time you are never travelling more than 1 or 2 miles to get anywhere, and most of the time there's no need to use the freeway. if you live on the eastside or something , yes traffic is bad, but that isn't seattle.

Obligatory Portland Maine representing in response to ambiguously titled topic. Come live here, it's awesome. Art and restaurants and nature and the ocean and cheap houses and Boston in two easy hours if for some reason you need to visit a metropolis.

Portland is a filthy city. I've never seen so many syringes on the ground as there. Hawthorne street was especially bad.

It has a huge homeless population. I walked past a couple myself on the way to class constantly.
Huh, didn't know it was considered the "homelessness capital of the United States". Insane. I wonder if the weather is the primary reason for many homeless migrating there.

as long as you agree with them.

This. My best friend and his g/f moved to portland last year (they both at least like to pretend they are liberal as fuck) but were taken aback at how CONSERVATIVE they seem up there.

And Portland downtown is assholeexpensive to live in. Both he and his girl make pretty solid salaries (she's just a shade under 6 figures) and had a hard time finding a place in the cool neighborhoods intown.

somehow even worse than Seattle

I've been told that the homeless flock to Portland from all over the West Coast.

The inevitable insecure seattlite showing up to shit on a portland thread. Why don't you do us a favor and cobain yourself in a parking lot somewhere :D

I swear it's not... ! We don't... !

Okay, yes it's true. :< (Though not for me, I have more sense than that.)

Oh god, my fashion sense!

I saw a woman buying edible hemp chips in MoC this weekend. And you suggesting giant evilore faces aren't handsome and fashionable? Better watch what you say...

That sounds like Eugene. Also, ew.

I'm just saying red and baggy might not be the way to go! How about a nice pin?

I love Portland but fucking hate 90% of all Portlanders. Douchey, lazy, self entitled assholes.

On the other hand, way more attractive girls there, though at any given moment the girl you have your eye on has a 50/50 chance to be a stripper.

On the west coast I find that the closer you get to the Canadian border the hotter the girls become

IMO if course, just my experience every time I visit the US

Lived there for a few years before going back to Vancouver, BC.

Great place. Would move there again without a thought. I like all of the PNW, though. It's just who I am and where I belong. Not everyone feels that way about this area of the continent. It rains less in Portland than in Vancouver it seemed, but it was still grey quite a bit of the time. That's like a blanket of comfort for me. It might depress others. I do admit the weather does get exaggerated by some. It's not nearly as bad as other parts of the world when it comes to hours of sunshine a year. Try living in London or Amsterdam or Tokyo and you'll see some serious grey days.

Great weed, too. First med. state in the US.

I like Portland. Grew up there, but it's the whitest city in America. More so than Salt Lake City. The city has done a horrible job of connecting with minorities.

Who cares about sports? (said the University of Oregon graduate.) And you must have never been to Oregon if you feel we don't have four seasons.

I would hope no one would base their decision on where they should live around sports teams. You can support whatever team you want just as well from anywhere else.

Too reasonable for this forum

It is, and that's actually something that really bothers me. I'd really like to know what Portland (and Oregon as a whole) could do to attract greater diversity to the area. Sometimes it seems like perhaps it is just a vicious cycle. Lack of diversity makes minorities not want to move there which creates a lack of diversity. Or perhaps it is just how they are treated. Being white myself, it isn't something I have any first hand dealings with.

I have been trying to steal that tag for awhile now, but he is quite a formidable boss.

Does anyone else think we ought to have an Oregon OT? I know we're a small group, but still, I do love to talk about Oregon. I'd be willing to help make it.

Devo and I are working on a Portland |OT| at the moment. I am sure it will be grand.

Aww, that's too bad. I'm not in Portland so I guess I couldn't contribute. I'll be sure to peek in sometimes though!

So I shouldn't move there if I'm a minority?

I guess you'd have to ask someone who is a minority how they feel about living there. I want to encourage everyone to come to Oregon, but not if they won't enjoy living here!
