I'm watching Star Wars EP2 and holy crap at how the cgi is aging horribly!

The clone troopers are all CGI. They look CGI.

Why did Lucas do this? It's just some fucking dudes in plastic suits.

Indeed, lots of older '80 movies end up looking terrible in HD. And I highly doubt its an issue with the high resolution, considering those movies were out in theaters and had like 5x the resolution back then.

I wonder if its some sort of color timing issue... Maybe Garry Whita knows more about this process?

What the fuck would a screenwriter know about color timing or special effects? :lol

I was just watching AI and was thinking about how much better this film looks than the SW prequels, it came out a year before EP2.

It's a perfect example of new movies looking less real than older ones. Models and real sets > CGI.

It never looked that good to begin with. I was watching the first Jurassic Park last week and as far as CGI from 1993 goes, it looked pretty damn good. Makes you wonder what the fuck happened in the Star Wars prequels.

Lucas tried to do too much with what was available at the time.

Just watched Jurassic Park the other night as well. That T-Rex scene is holding up pretty damn good. Still one of the most tense scenes ive ever seen.

What really kills them is the horrible costumes. In one scene in the stadium battle, this guy:

...you could see the back of his head costume almost come off when he did the Force Push. It was right at the center of the frame, it looked so fake and ridiculous.

lol his gloves don't even fit right

I still prefer the models from the original trilogy. I know crazy but for me models almost always are better then CGI. Same goes for sets, you just don't get the right reaction from actors when they are jumping around in front of a green screen full of green pillows and cubes etc.

I sat down and watched a few minutes of the arena battle scene. The CGI of the monsters looked good, but when the characters are interacting with them it all breaks apart. Then the laughable part where Princess Amidala jumps off a 3 story pillar and lands directly on the back of the mount behind Anakin was too much. :lol

My 5 year old watched for about 3 minutes and got bored and walked away. I don't think they will ever be into Star Wars.

When done right, you never even notice the CG models or sets. There are probably plenty of examples of films and shows that were blue/green screened and you don't even realize they weren't using real sets. Same with models. But then people notice something off in a film and instantly proclaim all CG is bad. :/

Don't forget the kiss and witty banter about hostile negotiations because it's the story and script that matter.

I still think that the asteroid chase has uberly awesome CGI. rock and lighting effect are top notch.

(I know how easy it is to render compared to actual, good looking bad weather water)

People seriously are forgetting how terrible some of the costumes were back then.

There was a dancing blue plush elephant from Disney in Jabba's castle, for example.

:(

Are you talking about Max Rebo? Because he's amazing.

I never liked any of the guys in Jabba's Palace, including Jabba. I didn't like the place either.

The music when Luke and the gang escaped from the barge is great though. Played endlessly in X-Wing.

Episode 2 was awful, worst of all the SW films no doubt. The CG was laughable even when it was released. With Episode 1 they used lot of traditional techniques with models, sets, etcs, but with Episode 2 they went batshit insane with doing most of the movie green screened. There was some nice effect shots in 2, but there was so much bad that ugh.

It was also just boring as hell, the longest SW film, and the worst performing at the box office.

The CG in episode 3 was a huge improvement.

Sure it's obvious but.. Star Wars is hokey, why the need to suspend disbelief or whatever. Max Rebo and his band are hilarious and play some superbly funky tunes.

Costumes look funnier than bad CG. The bad CG in Episode 2 is just boring while Max Rebo jumping and dancing is awesome.

But sure if the point of having a blue elephant keyboardist was to create some awesome sense of place and realism, and if they actually wanted you to feel, damn.. this is a REAL walking and keyboard-playing bipedal blue elephant.. then I guess they failed.

Seriously, this. I don't know the idea of CGI'ing all of the clone troopers, who are given prominent screen time, popped into Lucas' head. I mean, they aren't some huge monster or alien you have to CGI, they are literally fucking stormtroopers from the past. Was he worried that the costumes would look too plastic or fake? No one complains about how the stormtroopers looked, in fact most of us think they did and still do look awesome. The decision to CGI the troopers is painfully obvious and sad in Episode III when Obi-Wan is talking to one of the troopers with their helmet off. Instead of asking Temuera Morrison to wear a suit and stand there, they instead CGI him in there. What is the point of that? There's no way that was cheaper than having Morrison stand there in a suit.

Tem Morrison was standing there. It was everything else that was CG which makes it look odd.

They had lot more clone troopers in the prequels than we see stormtroopers and the armor was more complex in design as well. It was cheaper to just CG the hell out of it than making thousands of clone trooper armors. Obviously for the close up shots they should have had made some actual armor, but apparently they went with all CG so they all looked uniform instead of having the ones in costume look plastic, while the CG ones looking obviously different. It's a shitty excuse and sad that they didn't make any actual armor. Only the helmets in some of the shots were real.

I just assume that since they were all clones, they all had to be the same height and everything, so hiring extras would've been a pain.

I guess.
