Based on: J.R.R Tolkien's The Hobbit

Although a fairytale, the book is both complex and sophisticated: it contains many names and words derived from Norse mythology, and central plot elements from the Beowulf epic, it makes use of Anglo-Saxon runes, information on calendars and moon phases, and detailed geographical descriptions that fit well with the accompanying maps. Near the end, the tale takes on epic proportions.

The Hobbit has been adapted for other media. BBC Radio 4 broadcast The Hobbit radio drama, adapted by Michael Kilgarriff, in eight parts from September to November 1968, which starred Anthony Jackson as narrator, Paul Daneman as Bilbo, and Heron Carvic as Gandalf. Another famous audio adaptation authorized by Professor Tolkien was published by Conifer Records in 1974 and featured Nicol Williamson as every character.

An animated version of the story debuted as a television movie in the U.S. in 1977.

Synopsis: Bilbo Baggins is swept into a quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of thirteen dwarves led by the legendary warrior, Thorin Oakenshield. Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers. Although their goal lies to the East and the wastelands of the Lonely Mountain first they must escape the goblin tunnels, where Bilbo meets the creature that will change his life forever ... Gollum. Here, alone with Gollum, on the shores of an underground lake, the unassuming Bilbo Baggins not only discovers depths of guile and courage that surprise even him, he also gains possession of Gollum's "precious" ring that holds unexpected and useful qualities

Key characters

Bilbo:
The central protagonist of the fabled story. Bilbo is half-Took, half-Baggins, the son of Bungo Baggins and Belladonna Took and and it certainly shows at various stages in the narrative. His Tookish side side of him grows and flourishes as he yearns for adventure and a chance to prove his worth to the doubting Dwarves.

Gandalf:

The spiritual leader of the company and a being with quite the secret that not many in Middle-Earth are aware of, but to Bilbo and the dwarves he's a leader and a guide, whose wisdom is a comfort whenever they feel in dire straits. His disappearance half-way through the narrative does raise some eyebrows, but all is revealed in the end.

The Dwarves:

Led by the great Thorin Oakenshield, son Thrain, grandson of the mighty Thror and heir to the riches beneath Lonely Mountain, including his most yearned for treasure, the Arkenstone. Alongside Thorin we have the likes of Fili, Kili, Dwalin, Balin, Oin, Gloin, Ori, Dori, Nori, Bifur, Bofur, and Bombur.Who all play important roles in the grand adventure.

Elrond: Son of the great mariner Eärendil and half-elven. He is described in detail in the Lord of the Rings; "The face of Elrond was ageless, neither old nor young, though in it was written the memory of many things both glad and sorrowful. His hair was dark as the shadows of twilight, and upon it was set a circlet of silver; his eyes were grey as a clear evening, and in them was a light like the light of stars. Venerable he seemed as a king crowned with many winters, and yet hale as a tried warrior in the fullness of his strength. He was the Lord of Rivendell and mighty among both Elves and Men."

Provides shelter as well as an important snippet of information to Bilbo.

Galadriel:

Galadriel was the only daughter and youngest child of Finarfin, prince of the Ñoldor and of Eärwen, whose cousin was Lúthien. Her elder brothers were Finrod Felagund, Angrod, and Aegnor. The Lady of Lórien exudes all the ethereal beauty of the elves, but also exhibits small glimpses of the might of the Elves in the First Age. One of the only beings to have suspected Sauron during his phase as Annatar and to have rejected him.

fnYda.png

Saruman:The wisest of his order; The Istari. Also known as Curunir and a powerful Maia of Aulë. Is he as trustworthy as he is deemed to be or has he followed the path to ruin like his predecessor; Sauron, who was once aligned with Aulë.

dfvE5.png

Gollum: He wasn't to dissimilar to a hobbit once, but an act of pure cowardliness and evil, led to him to a path that he could never recover from. His doom seemed set in stone and his fate intertwined with the fate of the magical ring he loves so much. But what purpose does the ring ultimately hold and what of its origins?

VCTFw.jpg

Smaug: A descendant of the great winged dragons unleashed by Morgoth as a final offensive against the might of the Host of the Valar led by Eonwe, during the War of Wrath. He was the last of the great fire-drakes, and said to be the greatest dragon of his time. At some time during the twenty-eighth century of the Third Age, he came to hear of the immense wealth held by the Dwarves of Erebor. Where he came from we do not know for certain, but in the year III 2770 he descended in fire on the Lonely Mountain, destroying the Dwarf-kingdom and the nearby township of Dale.

TN0JR.png

Trolls: North of the Old Forest Road, between the Hoarwell and Bruinen (Loudwater) Rivers, was a forest that became known as the Trollshaws as it was taken over by three trolls. Bert, Tom and William Huggins lived there and spent their time feasting on unwary travellers until Bilbo and the company happen to come across them

HsnEX.jpg

Beorn:A skin-changer who dwells in the Vales of Anduin near the western eaves of Mirkwood, he can take the form of a Man or a huge black bear. He plays a significant role in a huge battle that occurs during The Hobbit, but whose side is he on and do they prevail?

tcqEB.jpg

Score: The man who composed one of the greatest all encompassing scores in the history of film making returns to score The Hobbit. His work on the trilogy far surpassed his previous work and certainly added an extra dimension of greatness to the trilogy. From bombastic themes, to ethereal themes, to grandiose themes and tear inducing themes, his work had it all.

Release date: 14th December 2012.

Roads go ever ever on,
Over rock and under tree,
By caves where never sun has shone,
By streams that never find the sea;
Over snow by winter sown,
And through the merry flowers of June,
Over grass and over stone,
And under mountains in the moon.

Roads go ever ever on
Under cloud and under star,
Yet feet that wandering have gone
Turn at last to home afar.
Eyes that fire and sword have seen
And horror in the halls of stone
Look at last on meadows green
And trees and hills they long have known.

Since I felt the trilogy got progressively worse, it's hard for me to get super excited for this.

Looks fine, but unnecessary and the pacing of the trailer felt off to me.
