Man, forget about Playstation for a second, from the OP it sounds like you never played a PC game, either? Now there's some history to catch up on.
Correct. A high-quality gaming PC is definitely out of my budget
I can't even wrap my head around the idea.
Get a PS2 especially, that thing is heaven. And look forward to the PS4.
I'm thinking more towards next-gen though. I do my classic gaming during droughts of current releases, so I'd love to have a PS4 and then be able to stream games from the previous system on this Gaikai service... you can already stream PS1 and 2 games on PS+, right? And they have a lot of the classics available? I'm hoping that remains in place with the PS4, with the addition of PS3 games. That would be the ultimate value for me... though maybe I'm not describing how PS+ works at all, and perhaps I'm misreading what Gaikai will offer as well. I literally solely know about these services (and anything else Sony) from the occasional Playstation threads I browse on GAF (which aren't many, because why waste time reading about something I'm not going to be able to play?)
He's right, though. While what you list is indeed great, the notion of not ever getting to play Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, the Uncharteds, the Ratchets, the Sly Coopers, Infamous, the Metal Gears, the Suikodens, the Personas, the Yakuzas, the God of Wars, Valkyria Chronicles, Journey, Flower...you've missed so many things that are irreplaceable gaming experiences, at least to me. It's no different from having missed the Zeldas, the Marios, the Halos, the GTAs. If you love the medium, I don't understand the notion of only picking two of three systems. Even systems I find disappointing overall, like the Wii, have games on them I wouldn't trade for anything on another system.
On one hand, you're in for a treat with a lot of what you've missed, but on the other, much of it is either unattainable now (the Suikodens, for example) or ravaged by time (most of the PSone library and some of the PS2's). It's a very temporal medium, and it's hard to go back if you don't have a nostalgic streak for some of the older stuff.
Yeah, damn, that sounds like a pretty solid list. And I DO love the medium, which is why it would be fantastic to catch up on all of these games I've never played.
I'm not sure though how it's so hard for some of you to understand why a person might be in my situation. Gaming is an incredibly expensive hobby. I wasn't financially capable of supporting my gaming until this most recent gen (before that I was too young for a job so I relied on gifts and the occasional game that I could afford with allowance money, plus plenty of rentals), and despite now being a broke college student who has mainly only had minimum-wage gigs, I still bought the Wii and 360 and amassed very large gaming collections for both. Not to mention all of the DS and now 3DS expenses. There's always something good to play too... it's not like I didn't have plenty of content with the systems I owned.
Guess what...
I don't have an HD TV either! Which, ya know, really freaking sucks, but again, I've never been able to budget it in.
Sir, might i ask you why on earth you couldn't have put a fraction of those dollars on a videogame console that would give you so much?
If i were you my friend i would go out and buy a PS1 just to experience the most important period in videogame history.
I want a backwards compatible PS4, dammit! Give me all four systems in one Sony!
Oh god you're so wrong its not even funny, literally among the best commercials ever made.
What year was it from?
You need to consider that commercial from the time when it was made. It was incredibly progressive, new and eye catching. From a time when video game commercials produced by the competition were typically like this:

Sony had absolutely remarkable marketing throughout the PS1 and PS2 era
Yeah, okay, I can definitely understand this then. I thought this was a PS3 era ad, and I firmly stand by the notion that it would be a terrible advertisement to enact in the current industry climate.
So what happened to their marketing then? All I'm familiar with are the hilarious terri-bad ones... creepy baby, racist PSP, etc.
Wow.
I'm just thinking about this...
You've probably never played a Suikoden game.
Or a Twisted Metal.
Or a Jumping Flash, or any of the Crash games, or Ape Escape, or Sly, or Ratchet and Clank games.
Or Onimusha 2.
You've never rapped with Parrapa the Rapper.
Or played most of the Legacy of Kain games, if any.
You've never played a Wipeout.
You've never played a God of War.
Or an Uncharted.
Or Ico.
Or Shadow of the Colossus.
Or any Gran Turismo.
You've never played a Hot Shots Golf, or MLB The Show.
Or Loco Roco or Patapon?
...that's just off the top of my head. And I'm not even including PSN, which is where some real gaming breakthroughs occurred this gen. OMG...you've never played anything from the PixelJunk series.
I have not played a single game on this list. Feels bad man
That commercial doesnt tick a lot of boxes now, marketing changes a lot. I just assume the OP thought it was relatively new
For the time, it was amazing. Not something you'd expect out of a game commercial and it really challenged notions of how games should and did get marketed. Sony changed the industry in so many ways, including marketing.
Sonys entire trippy take on lifestyle, especially with PS2, caught on everywhere. Even Nintendo tried to replicate it

And Microsoft

Fascinating. It's a shame they lost focus this gen with their marketing, I love me some relevant and effective ads.
Also, while I'm thinking about it,
how is the Dualshock controller? I HAVE held one before (the PS2 one) and it didn't fit my grip nearly as comfortably as what I was used to. And NOW the 360 controller has become my favorite ever... the DS4 images look like the controller is in a very similar vein to previous iterations, which concerns me... but then again, maybe the comfort level clicks once you adapt and are used to using it.
