I don't know of a way to edit the keyboard controls. Using a USB gamepad is ideal.

Really, at first glance, freeware PC gaming seems useless, but it's nice that stuff like Cave Story might be changing people's minds.

Probably the first free game with a copy protection
And that copy protection is Starforce...

Once and for all.

Trackmania Nations does not require Starforce on your computer.

It will UPDATE Starforce if you have an older version. You can run it without SF installed.

Really nice topic here. Surprised I haven't seen this one posted yet:

Akuji:

A nice little platformer where you play as a demon going through his castle to regain his powers from a hero who had defeated him before. The creator of the game, Buster, also has more nice freeware games up at his site: http://hp.vector.co.jp/authors/VA025956/

It seems that the site that has the english patch is down right now. You can get the already english patched version of Akuji at HOTU: http://www.the-underdogs.info/game.php?id=4160

Megaman 21XX:

(wish I could get a better screenshot, but print screen gives me a crappy capture for this game)

I wasn't sure about posting this one, since it's a fan game, but I remembered people posting those little Mario games so why not. This is your typical Megaman X platformer, except that it has alot of fan made characters to play as. It may not run on your computer, because it's old and coded in Allegro. But it's a really well done game, I've been following it for years. If you like Megaman X games, give it a shot. You can find it at the bottom of the first post(which explains some of the history behind the game) here: http://stroutsink.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=498

Or if you prefer the graphical-type adventures, check out The White Chamber It's a pretty rockin' point-and-click adventure game of the horror variety. Very professionally done, and at least a few hours of gameplay.

I downloaded that; it strikes me as point and click version of Silent Hill.
That one part were you go back to that room that acts as a elevator; after you nearly get sucked into outer space. Looked like something out of Silent Hill. The music makes you feel like you just going to get attacked at any moment.

Hate to piss in cheerios, but much of Abandonia's stuff is about as legal as Home of the Underdogs. Which means that it isn't.

But can you install it without installing Starforce?

I wish I could say, can't remember. I think you can install it and run the SF Driver remover before Windows even uses the drivers, though.

Came across this today, haven't seen it mentioned.

Nexuiz - Free, open-source FPS.

I've literally only just watched a gameplay vid and know nothing more about it, it looks like it plays like Quake3.
Might take a closer look over the weekend.

Unfortunately this is not true, even if you use starforce's own removal tool the next time you run nations it will install the driver again.

http://penumbragame.com/

I don't think this has been posted yet... Anyway, the game is called Penumbra. It was created by a small group of students, plus some additional people for sound, etc. It's pretty cool first person horror game. You start out with a flashlight (with limited battery power), a glowstick, a journal, and a few other things I'm probably forgetting. The game features some pretty impressive visuals. If your card can handle it, you can turn on motion blur. There's also a nice physics system in place. Instead of doors having standard open animations, their movement is physics based. So, if you needed to block a door, for example, you could drag a crate in front of it.

You can never have enough shooters.

Cho Ren Sha 68K
This game is brilliant! Originally a Sharp X68000 game which probably helps explain the real "arcade feeling" it has. Download it now.

Radio Zonde
NOTE! In the game menu you need to select "Switch" and then set Existance to "mortal" otherwise you will have infinitive lives which isn't much of a challenge. Once you are mortal though... good luck.

I know X speeds thru the chat and z jumps. No clue how to interact with stuff
Press Down to interact with doors, people, etc. For the rest of the controls, run the DoConfig.exe program that's in the game's folder and you can configure your gamepad if you have one, or at least look at how the keyboard is mapped out.

Cave Story makes my pc reboot :(

I'm really sad now. Should I buy a new pc to play Cave Story?
It used to bluescreen/reboot on my computer until I applied the audio acceleration fix that I described earlier in the thread. It can prevent crashes and improves sound quality on some systems.

Control Panel -> Sounds and Audio Devices -> Audio -> Advanced -> Performance -> Hardware Acceleration. Move that slider to one of the two spots in the middle. Try both spots and see which one sounds better.

Currently playing The Ur Quan Masters - so awesome. They did a great job with the programming - if you play it in windowed mode it hides some of the graphics so you should make sure to play it in full screen mode.

The voices, I mean the sheer humor of everything is so subtle.

For those who want a quick rundown of what the game is like:

For most of the time you are collecting raw materials on different planets to get more $ to buy more ship parts or fuel or crewmen, along the way you fight other alien ships or find aliens on the planets or even befriend various ships along the way (if you talk your way through conversations correctly). Eventually your ship is bada$$ and you can fly around solar systems with ease, to start out you are pretty slow and have to upgrade lots of parts to get bada$$ (at least I'm not retarded and saying "Badical")

Bumped this because I want to download some of the scrolling shooters when I get home from work. Recently got a usb connector so I can plug my PS2 pads into my PC, started picking up games for my PC now!

I gotta buy a new pc controller, i'm having a hard time deciding to get a usb adapter for the ps2 controllers i have or a wired 360 controller.

Cave Story is coming to the GBA as a homebrew project. Some guy made a small demo of one of the levels and Pixel was so impressed he gave him the original source code and his blessing to remake the full game on the GBA. The small proof-of-concept demo ROM is downloadable on his website and it plays friggin' great. If the rest of the port is as high quality as the demo it'll be fantastic. You can play the demo ROM in an emulator on your PC if you don't have a GBA FlashCart.

WarRock
Open Beta started yesterday, it looks like a Battlefield clone. I'm still downloading, will edit with opinions later.

EDIT: Enjoyable enough considering it's free at the moment. I've only played the bombing gametype so far, no vehicles. The weapons don't really have any 'umph' and feel very inaccurate if it's not a rifle. Visually, it isn't offensive but it isn't going to make you say wow, all in all worth the download.

Grab a beer, get some friends on and play Well of Souls lol. Its titled as an "MMORPG" but its more like a very small online role player game. Remends me of the early final fantasy days for some reason. Fun stuff for a couple hours though :) You can make your own characters using photoshop or whatever as well lol. So people take FF characters and use them etc.

Another Castlevania SotN inspired game, this one with an Egyptian setting. The game is in japanese but it's easy to figure out (press F4 in the beginning to set up the controls).

This game was inspired by the MSX game Knightmare II: The Maze of Galious. Somebody please do a translation patch for this.

Here are some basic instructions (taken from the Metroidvania thread at Gamers Quarter):
Arrow keys - movement
Space - Primary weapon (Whip)
M key - Secondary weapon/item (none in the beginning)

F1 - pause
F2 - inventory and primary/secondary weapon switch
F3 - MSX cartridge change (explained below)
F4 - MSX screen (for maps)
F5 - options
F11 - quit

Saving
You must purchase the green 10 cartridge from the native shop and equip it using F3. Then speak with the chief (he's in the fancy tent). Choose the left option to save. If you have an old game, choose it again to overwrite.

I recently started playing Starpeace again. I once posted about it in a past incarnation of this forum that is long gone. Starpeace, a.k.a. Legacy Online while it was owned by Sega, is sort of a cross between Sim City and Capitalism, in MMO form. A player starts off simply as a business investor, joining a planet and starting up various stores, industries, residential units, etc. From there, you can solely work on building up your corporate empire, or also run for various political offices, including mayors of the various cities, or even president of the planet. Much of the Sim City aspect comes about when you're a mayor.

The game has had a strange history of being passed from publisher to publisher. At one point, Sega bought the rights to the game, and hosted it for a few months, only to quietly kill it off without informing anyone as to its status. Currently, a player who has been with the game pretty much since its inception has taken over, winning the rights to the game from the original developer since they weren't doing anything else with it.

Here's a page I made a long time ago from my last time playing before Sega killed it off:

http://astro.temple.edu/~ewoo/hkcity.html

And the site for the game is:
