In your honest opinion, what will the NX be?

What do you expect the NX to be?

A home console and handheld (sold separately).

The console controller will probably have a screen on it in a way we have not seen before.

The handheld will probably have similar functionality and button layout.

The two systems will have similar architecture, so it will be easy for developers to port from one to the other.

I don't think they will have the same exact library and I don't think that you only have to buy one copy to play on both systems.*

*I think there will be internet outrage over this because of the common misconception it is one hybrid system

Home console, with same hardware as the handheld, but with higher clocks and more cores.
And 100% shared library. If it isn't, I guess Nintendo is heading toward a wall.

Handheld slightly more powerful than Wii U with 1.5 GB available for ram.

Home console that's more powerful with 3 GB ram for games.

Think of the Vita for the home console in power compared to a PS2 for handheld.

No Wii U backwards compatibility as architecture is different and there'll be no optical drive. 3DS backwards-compatibility for the portable.

Same cartridges for both systems with sizes ranging from 4 GB to 16 GB with the rare 32 GB for Xenoblade Chronicles and Zelda.

Home console controller will be more smaller with a 3 inch screen in the middle. Backwards-compatibility with all Wii/Wii U accessories.

$200 for Handheld
$250 for Home Console

A family of different devices running the same OS and the majority of the same games, with games requiring more power being limited to more powerful devices (i.e. there will be "Levels" of NX devices).

The first wave of NX will simply be a console and handheld, but over time, more form factors, all using the same operating system, will be launched to cater to different markets. As time goes on, instead of releasing new consoles with significant power increases, simply a new "level" of NX will be launched, with games running better on it, and newer games only running on that level.

This will give the benefit of your whole NX library staying with you, and means Nintendo can iterate on hardware as they please without having to worry as much about software costs and attatch rates to those specific pieces of hardware.

There probably will be an NX Console, but it likely won't be the only NX device.

I was under the impression that the NX was a platform that will have a console version and handheld version. Where is this idea that there will only be handheld coming from?

I think a touchpad on the controller may suffice. Either clickable or with non-contact finger tracking, so your tv has a cursor for where you're pointing before the input.
Can be pretty much 1:1 with the handheld version's touch screen controls then, at least for standard things like menu buttons.

Adding modes that use the handheld as a controller in sync with the console will probably be recommended to devs, but not required.

That's most likely the case. Recent speculation from analysts indicate that the handheld may be the NX device to be released this year, with the home console potentially being held back for sometime next year.

I hope it plays like a device that was made in 2016. No more clunky and slow ui, better internet options, and games that at least come close to reaching Xbox One level graphics. Apart from that, I'm open to anything new or exciting.

Seems strange. With Nintendo winding down services on the Wii U, I'm pretty sure that the console is coming sooner rather than later. I guess we'll see.

It's kind of an interesting one because the analysts seem to be going all in on the handheld while the more recently public statements from Nintendo and developers have pretty much only referred to it as a console.

Mind, the Wii U is the platform that's considered an unequivocal failure, so talking about replacing that more publicly is probably seen as pertinent.

Console and handheld, architecture designed with handheld in mind, console simply clocks up the hardware to 11 where possible.

Whatever it ends up being, I just need a new mainline Metroid game out of it.

I went with "Home Console (w/ mobile hardware, maybe same as handheld) and a Handheld" because the easiest way I can see of this working is for the cpu arch on both to be the same. That can't happen with PPC, will drain the battery too fast with x86, which leaves just arm.

I fully expect the console version to have the most powerful arm chip possible though, and amd graphics.

I originally thought it was going to be a tablet similar to the iPad, but I read something weeks ago that has lead me to believe it will be a WiiiU 2.

I think the handheld will be able to connect to the tv, but they will also have a traditional console too which the handheld can be a controller

2016 has Star Fox, Paper Mario, Zelda, and potentially Pikmin 4. I think NX console is 2017.

The NX is probably a family of devices, including a handheld, console, and potentially other form factors, all sharing a common OS.

Most games will be playable across a all form factors, but games can have required power levels (abstracted enough so that the average user could understand, naturally) or features which make them exclusives to certain form factors.

Future hardware beyond NX will simply be additional devices added to the ecosystem, similar to how smartphones work.

It'll be an emotive giant amiibo, similar to the big wooly Yoshi plush amiibo. You have to pick it up, carry it around, play with it, put a blanket over it, etc. in order to keep it happy. Only when it's happy can you reliably play games on it — if it's upset, it will randomly turn the game off, demanding that you play with it/feed it/etc. It serves as a controller too, one arm acting as a joystick, the eyes a buttons, and so forth.

+1

Other.

Probably a time dimension machine, porting us to real life virtual reality. We will be able to ride Yoshi for real for his new adventures, catch fishes and flies in Animal Crossing and bring em to our real world, and it will at the same time destroy Oculus VR and all competition.

It will be a handheld that doubles back as a juicer.

So you play games and have a better diet, some games even give you extra points for juicing certain ingredients. It is the conjunction of Gaming Nintendo and QoL Nintendo.

Pff! Just give me the Varia suit, and get out of my way. :P

I like how some people think that games would scale from a subpar iPod Touch handheld tier device to full-scale console games just because the console hardware is faster.

Like a iOS game would only need some new textures and it becomes a real console game.

My prediction is in line with the rumors that it will somehow be a handheld and home console. I speculate that the power of the console with disappoint GAF.

I think that the idea of two devices working in tandem, with an handheld component and a classic home console, is a disaster. That will fragment the user base, and disperse the developers focus. If third party support is a challenge today for Nintendo this kind of strategy will be a nightmare.

I think that there will be an handheld device released first, and a home console released 1 year latter. The home console will be able to stream games to the handheld, like Remote Play or Steam Home Streaming, but the library won't be shared beyond that. The handheld will not be used to enhance the performance of the home console.

But I know that Nintendo always tries to innovate in its hardware with some specific feature that defines the device. Motion, 3D, Tablet/touch based gameplay. I'm eager to learn what Nintendo has reserved for these devices. And I'm glad it will be a surprise. I like surprises.

The only pie in sky idea I have regarding the NX is a low-cost GBA SP-style hardware configuration that is only compatible with pre GBA & SNES virtual console titles. This would probably eat into the market for the full-fledged NX console, so it probably won't happen.

Other than that I don't have a lot to add, but I will anyways. I think NX will be:

-An OS that streamlines Nintendo's development, allowing a piece of software to be played on multiple forms of hardware. Hopefully this will be the beginning of cross-buy, cross-save, and other modern expectations.

-These forms of hardware will be:
-A single-screen portable system
-A conventional home console. The home console will be around the xbone in terms of power. Nintendo will make another big effort to woo major 3rd parties.

-The portable and home hardware can be used in conjunction for off-TV play, Nintendo Land-style asymmetric play, and emulation of DS, 3DS and Wii U titles.

A hybrid. A handheld with power just above the WiiU that will come with an HDMI signal sender for TV play. Been saying this for well over a year. Gonna dig up my original post about it so I can brag when it gets announced.

You're gonna have to eat your avatar if Iwata publicly announces it's not a hybrid.

I don't think they'll stop supporting the Wii U immediately after the NX console is released. I don't believe the Wii U will stay their only console this year. They'll do what they have to in the early part of the year and throw some things in there to keep the system going until near launch of the next console later this year. Star Fox will be out in late Spring and I imagine we'll get Paper Mario to fill in a gap in the Summer months and Zelda will probably be at the end of the year, but will come out on the NX as well.

That said, I wouldn't be surprised if the console released in North America first in 2016 and in other territories in 2017. Same with the handheld version. So in that sense, it will launch in 2017 in some territories.

It will be 2 variations that go under the 'NX' umbrella.

One console. One handheld.

There might also be a toaster oven though I may have to check my sources.

The Wii U 2. Tablet controller returns in a much smaller form factor (pocket sized) and link up to main console from anywhere if a net connection is available. Xbone comparable hardware at best. Priced at $399. No third party support. DOA and is Nintendo's last console. Nintendo goes third party and makes billions off of Mario, Pokemon, Zelda, etc. from on virtually every platform available to man (except the Vita).

A lot of people are picking "A Hybrid Home Console/Handheld" despite that being extremely implausible and explicitly contradicted by Nintendo.

Or maybe they misunderstood the option? That option should have made it clear that it meant a hardware-level hybrid, a single physical device serving as both home console and handheld.

A hybrid console handheld, the games you buy and play on the handheld can be played on TV,and vice versa. It will also have Amiibo support and be digital only...some or all of these things may not be true

I think NX will be a platform that is all tied together with some sort of Android-like software. NX will be a home console, a mobile device, and the name of an iOS/Android app. Everything will be based on a similar core, just scaled up and more powerful for the home console. This will allow them to streamline development and release a game that works on all 3 platforms and just scale up the res and graphics depending on where it is played.
