Segata Sanshiro said:The sad thing is that it's not hard to see where this is going to lead for Inafune. He's betting hard on this, and if it fails, Inafune is going to get Yu Suzuki'd, which is going to cost Capcom yet another one of the minds that built their company.
I think Western gamers are behind the reason that Japanese publishers are able expand their business worldwide, there are a lot of Japanese games fans in the west, and they are eager for more Japanese titles.seady said:I agree. Many (especially the press) say the Japanese are not keeping up with the rest of the world when it comes to designing games, I don't agree. I don't think it's due to their creativity but the biased that come from the more powerful Western market.
The buying power of the West makes Western style 'the things to aim for' when designing games. I wouldn't say Japanese make awful and uncreative games, instead they have much more creativity than the same old shooters, character design, or boring art style the Western developers continue to make.
It's just that when these Japanese games are not cater to the bigger Western market, the media reviewing these games tend to give away unfair and biased criticism. One great example would be Monster Hunter. The reviews of earlier MH games were extremely negative because it doesn't cater to them. It wasn't until the game exploded in popularity in Japan then the Western media admit it's a fine game and start giving it good reviews.
Imagine the buying power is in Japan, games like Monster Hunter, Winning Eleven and Yakuza would be the "AAA" titles, while Western games like Halo, Madden, Gears and COD will be the niche.
That isn't fair though since tons of western games fail online as well. Demon Souls and RE5 are both good examples of great online play from Japan (unless I am sadly mistaken).Htown said:Japanese games as a whole are only really worse than Western games in one respect right now: online play. In general, Japanese online games are clunkier and have fewer features than online games from the West. Take two months off, go play some Halo, Modern Warfare, and Team Fortress 2, maybe some World of Warcraft or something I don't know.
Other than that, the only differences are stylistic ones, and the only real failures have been when Japanese devs have tried too hard to make their games appeal to the West. When they do this, they never go far enough to get it "right" and they only end up alienating both the Japanese and Western audiences.

kevm3 said:As much as I'd personally like to disagree with Inafune, he's right. When I look at my library, for the most part, it is nothing but Western titles. All of the past generations, my titles have almost been exclusively Japanese. Most of the significant titles that come to mind this generation are Western. We do have a few standout Japanese titles, but other than something like The Last Guardian, GT5 or MGS, there's not been all that much that has really caught my eye. You do have interesting niche titles here and there like 3d Dot Heroes though, but overall, Japan doesn't seem to be the gaming powerhouse on this current gen like they were for the previous ones.

But Platinum games are about appealing to the west, they just don't do it at the sacrifice of their own style.AngelComa said:This is a real shame, no wonder the big names left to Platinum Games and wanted control to make what they wanted. All the people left in Capcom keep on thinking about how to 'please' western audiences, when all they should be doing is trying to create a game that is great.
Seriously, copying western developers is not going to help the Japanese game industry.

A budget for a blockbuster game in the United States can approach $50 million, a figure few Japanese developers can now match.

I look around Tokyo Games Show, and everyones making awful games; Japan is at least five years behind, said Keiji Inafune, 45, head of global research and development at Capcom and one of Japans most prominent game designers.
Capcom is barely keeping up, he said in an interview at the show, which ended Sunday.
