Inappropriate gamer tags.

I can see if Sony were to ban people from multiplayer due to offensive actions, but banning people from their purchases or subscribed services (other than MP) is near criminal imo.
I also believe bannings should be handled very carefully and only as an action of last resort after multiple attempts at correcting the problem with the consumer. Far far too many online services treat bannings with little care and will punish for the tiniest of infraction. Look at how EA will ban users from content for the smallest of issues, from respectfully disagreeing with a mod or even being on the receiving end of a trolls post.

Permanent bannings should be treated like the online equivalent of the Death Penalty and only used in the most extreme of cases, AND NEVER should it revoke a users access to thier content - Unless the company will fully refund said purchases. If Sony wants to secure their place in the "Digital Future" they need to revoke policies that could be seen as anti-consumer and create safety nets to protect their consumers. Any other action would give many pause when it came to investments made in Sony's online stores and create a environment of distrust; Neither are helpful to Sony's end goal. Creating checks and balances to protect your customers is never a bad decision to make.

Was speaking in general more than at your case specifically.

I also laugh at most farts and inappropriate jokes, but I also know not to fart or tell off humor jokes in some places. Their EULA is designed to be as inclusive as possible and people just have to accept that. I mean you can buy a ticket to a big expensive dinner fund raiser with the Queen of England, but if you fart a bunch next to her or start making jokes about inappropriate things, they will kick you out without a refund. You can buy a game system as well and fart and tell dick jokes all over the place, but when you start doing it in places other users are involve din, they will kick you out as well.
Its a good thing we are not dealing with the queen of England here. I bet it all boils down to me wiping the floor with a mod online and he took his ban hammer out on me in anger.

That actually sounds worse... Could be interpreted or read as BFing a kid.
Oh wow LOL i did not see that.

Let me get this straight:

You sign up for the PSN and pick a name that's a bit questionable but there's no warning given to you when you first sign up.

You buy hundreds or even thousands of dollars in unsellable digital purchases.

Someone reports your name, and you have to beg for Sony's mercy in allowing you to continue to use content that you already paid for.

Quite a racket Sony's got going here.

That about sums it up.

Don't know if it's offensive or just funny for people or not, but my friend's GT and PSN has been DownsAttack since 2005. Never been banned. Depends how you look at it, I guess.

Finally going full circle.

"universal"? I never even heard of this word until today.

Check out my kak, suck my kak, is just short form for dick... Not surprisingly got flagged, the saying has been around forever

Doesn't really offend me but usernames like this serve no purpose anyway.. Why not just take thunderchicken and call it a day

I've had 'ass' in my tag since the early ps3 days and I've been a bit worried since I had one of my clanmates get pinched in like '09. Of course I don't really fan the flames in mp so I guess it's alright for now. I imagine I would go banana poop if I lost my digital purchases/trophies because they must total in the thousands and level 15.

The names I have seen on steam. Hell I've seen people rename their weapons on Cs:Go stuff like "N*gger Killer" using nazi symbols as a gamer picture. I don't know if it's not bannable but it's definitely ugly and far too common on there.

For some reason I can't use "Kimppis" as my username on PSN, which sucks because I use it everywhere else. What's the matter? Kimppis(s)? Lmao. And the funny thing is that I can't even put it on my introduction (don't know what it's in English, my PS4 is in Finnish), so I'm unable to "tell" my friends what's my gamertag/etc. (But it was OK on PS3!) Sony WTF!? Their filter is worse than the one in RuneScape back in the day, lol. Hitler? Nope, ******.

I logged in to Playstation Home for the first time in years last night in order to get the trophies, and I ran into a person who's Playstation handle was StaphInfection.

Should have went with ThunderGak

There's literally nothing anybody could use as their name that would offend me. I find taking offense to a username absolutely silly.

If it could be inappropriate for kids to see, then Sony should contact the user long before they close their account with a chance to choose something more appropriate.

Sorry for the necro bump but couldn't see any similar recent threads. A friend just had his 7 year old PSN account banned for an inappropriate username. Hundreds of pounds spent on games along with all his PS+ licenses down the drain.

I've helped him come to terms with the fact that he'll lose his friends list, trophies and online progress so right now he just wants to get his content licenses transferred to a new account to salvage something. Anyone had to go through this before? Any tips? He's already called customer services once who told him he's SOL but I can see multiple people on Reddit threads that seem to have been offered this in the past

obviously we want to know your friends name.

When I used to make Trials Evo tracks some guy on the leaderboard of one had the gamer tag 'Slimy Turd Stain'.

Still makes me chuckle today.

I assume you're aware of this story that surfaced back in June? There's really nothing you can do aside from badgering Sony again and again and again until it finally budges -- if it budges.

Haha. It was FotherMucker83. His own fault for trying to get around the cursing filter but he just thought it was harmless/amusing. I'm guessing someone got salty with him in a game of Uncharted MP and reported it

Uh... yeah, no shit he was banned for that. I'm frankly surprised Sony doesn't pick that up automatically.

I cannot suggest anything useful, but I would suggest he keep badgering Sony about this, and try to talk to a supervisor. Seems like the results people get from Sony in situations like this vary greatly depending on who they get to speak to. Also might be worth reading up on the Terms of Service and see what it says about Sony shutting down accounts with no prior warning regardless of how many purchases were on there. Seems very fucking shady to say the least; especially given that the account was active for 7 years with no problems.

Oh, I don't disagree. But after letting the account live for 6-7 years and letting him spend a tonne of money, I do think they should either let him change his name (unlikely due to their archaic network/database structure) or transfer his licenses to a new account. Will just tell him to be persistent and keep trying I guess. I'd be furious personally but I have far more financially invested in my PSN account. Just glad I don't have a daft name!

Geez. Yeah it seems like the only option you have is to keep calling and hoping someone helpful will answer next time. Aren't there like... more generous CSAs in the US or something? Or was that another region?

I wish Sony could really unfuck themselves with this name change thing. I think it's incredibly shitty of them to just ban someone and make them lose all their licenses for a name they accepted in the first place, without warning. That is... unless that PSN ID was something really offensive, like "Buttsmasherrrr* " or something (*please pardon my vulgar language)

Your friend is dumb but losing access to all the stuff you paid cold hard cash for is even dumber.

Perhaps your local consumer protection laws can help save your dumb friend who thought at 26 years of age that his username was hella rad.

Haha. I won't show him this thread as I'm sure he doesn't need kicking while he's down but this made me laugh

In the UK it's also slang for 'poo' (its meaning here is far milder than 'shit' really), so I guess that's the original derivation, interesting.

"I kakked my pants!" etc.

I've very rarely heard it in the US too, enough though that I immediately thought of poo when I read it. You tend to hear 'kaka' more often in the US.

I think Sony stealing (voiding) all of your digital content is a lot more offensive than having buttsmasherrrr for a userid. But that's just me i guess :-/

To me, this is not an offensive name. I called Sony and the girl I was on the phone with laughed and said she found it funny, not offensive. She told me there was nothing she could do about it, not even let me change my username so I had to talk to a manager. After getting him to allow me to change my name I had to beg for him to allow me to keep my PSN purchases. Thankfully I was able to salvage them but I still lost my trophies and online progress.

wow, they're able to change psn names after all?

So I know I'm replying to a post from 2 years ago here but this is interesting to me.

Maybe Sony can change names, or at least transfer licenses over to a new account when the original username doesn't need to be freed up anyway due to being inappropriate.

At least it's not something dumb like FaintColt388301

I think there needs to be a thing where, instead of bans, they force you to change it or be given a generic gamertag.

Risking losing ones purchase history is ridiculous for something like this.

Thanks for the advice people. Looks like this may be going nowhere anyway. He's spoken to 3 different people today and they've all basically said tough shit. He created a new account and asked them to transfer the licenses but no dice on that either. One person said a manager will call him back but this could take 3-4 days and another told him that if he doesn't like it, he can write to their legal department. I don't think he's going to get into a full blown lawsuit with Sony over a few hundred pounds of game purchases (nor could he afford to). Awful policy by Sony. Even if he was originally at fault, he's happy to work around this but it doesn't look like they will budge at all
