India state minister on rape: 'Sometimes it's right, sometimes it's wrong'

These things do happen and it's a terrible sight to behold. It doesn't necessarily reflect on the country as a whole.

But no one should take India seriously as a modern nation while politicians are actually trying to justify gang-rape of minors. They are giving the rest of the world a bad impression of the country they're representing.

Man WTF! I'm definitely gonna makes sure female members of my family stay far away from India, these articles piss them the fuck off too.

Yesterday I was reading an Ars report about India's massive public defecation crisis (over 600m people shit in public even if there are toilets available) and how it has a direct effect on children. Due to the bacteria and parasites surrounding them, Indian children are smaller and less developed than the children in poorer African countries.

I wonder if this in-turn leads to behavioural changes? If you're surrounded by constant physical filth, could it lead to a less empathetic society where people dismiss rape as a 'social' issue of low importance?

WOW!!!!

Rape is never right. NEVER!!!!!!!!

I just can't believe that any human being could say something like that. That just floors me.

yes india has a lot of great in it. there's a lot of cool things about the cuisine and culture, but there also appears to be a fuckton of rape, and that's what we're talking about. and yes, if people want to shit on the country as a whole while expressing their dismay of the rape problem there, then so be it, because rape is a pretty huge problem. saying there's a lot of nice things in india but rape isnt one of them' in every indian rape thread comes off a bit strange, don't you agree?

1. Rape is a huge problem here but most cases we hear are from the least developed states, so problem is not wide spread across India and has nothing to do with culture, hearing comments like "part of the culture" and "women are animals to them" fucking enrages me.
2. Caste system is a problem as well but its not as bad as some people make out. Government is doing all the necessary stuff to reduce the gap between the upper and lower class. for e.g student from Upper class has to score 95%+ to get a medical seat in college but a lower caste student has to score only around 50%.

Two biggest problems are

1. illiteracy
2. corruption

I have a lot of relatives from india, and from them I got the impression that a much greater importance is put on males then females. Is that false.

Or do you think that this will just go away as long as you have a permanent underclass?

That's very interesting. Had no idea Norway was ahead of Sweden.

It's also interesting that Australia and Canada, both offspring of the UK, is doing better than the mother country.

US have lots of immigrants, I wonder if that bad stats comes from them or the natives.

No, rapey immigrants are not the problem in the US.

i think most here are aware that this is happening in the poorer rural areas of the country. And i actually agree that those two problems are indias biggest, esspecially since theyre both precursors to the rape problem. but if my own country, canada, had a rape problem like indias in 2 or 3 provinces, i wouldnt mind saying that canada has a huge rape problem, and therefore that the country as a whole is fucked for harbouring it.

Australia, Canada are also high immigrated populations as well as the UK and most of west europe

Victim - "Hello, police, I'd like to report a rape."

Police - "What kind of rape was it? Was it a good rape or a bad rape?"

I don't know if you are being sarcastic or not but that's probably how a lot of rape emergency phone calls in india go like.

3. the existence of the caste system

Gap is shrinking at a faster rate than before, underclass are given better opportunity to come up. Its a slow process and will take time, caste system might eventually go away 30 years from now(depends on how fast the country is growing). Parents have no problem letting her daughter marry a guy from a lower caste as long as he can financial support them.

Maybe we are misunderstanding his context? Sometimes its right sometimes its wrong could mean sometimes its rape and sometimes its false accusation? I am unsure....I'd like to just throw hate at the guy but I have to be clear on the information first.

So, you don't see the implicit problem with that statement? (Hint: it's where the woman is used as a bargaining chip by her parents to extract money from the husband.)

Rape's also a violent crime that tracks up/down alongside things like murder and robbery, and unless the systemic environmental health issues get taken care of, you're likely to see those stupidly high rates stay put, no matter how much you try to chip away via culture.

the funny thing about this is that rape is so common in india that i cant help but wonder if he'll actually get more support because of this.
Uh... uh... no.

any system can be exploited, right?. Good people/parents expects their daughter to live a healthy and prosperous life , so they expect a guy to stay responsible and wealthy.

hmm, I'm not sure if that poster meant "them" or "her" (as in to support her, not her parents). I'm a first generation American (Indian heritage), and my girlfriend's parents are alright with her marrying me as long as I can support her (even though she is incredibly smart and can support herself just fine honestly) even though I'm a lower caste (lol, yes some Indian families carry over this ridiculous system to this country). They don't expect me to support them or want to extract money from me.

Anyway, I don't see a problem with it because I see the barriers coming down. Even 15-20 years ago, this would have been unheard of for some people so I'm glad to see progress even if it is slow.

The rape problem, though, I don't even know where to start with that. :/ It's definitely a problem, but I do have an issue with the way some people on GAF view and demean India as a whole after reading these stories. I understand it, though. Some of the attitudes of these politicians and officers are terrible. I'm not even sure how India can identify and weed out these backwards people.

What kind of mental disease do you have to have where Rape is considered OK

"Hey I just raped someone, don't worry, I did the right one, not the wrong one"

Jesus!

Worst yet is India's dirty laundry wouldn't be out there if the Internet didn't seep in everywhere and bring out all these problems people face daily in their countries
Crazy thing is this has been going on for a long ass time in the sub-contient area, just now there's a tool for new to reach people regarding it

Sure thing Mr. Minister, I get what you're saying. Don't worry, we'll just send over America's excessive guns to the women of your country. They can travel in groups and shoot any man who attempts torture/rape/beating/hanging and any other man who tries to report the shootings. If no one's saying anything, it's right, right? ;)

That's messed up.

I need to hear him say it in hindi to be sure though, maybe he couldn't get his meaning across in English (I really hope that is the case, I know it's a slim chance though...)

Maybe he meant sometimes accusations of rape are right, sometimes they are wrong.

A friend of mine is saying that some women that are friends of his got a few guns from someone (little snub revolver iirc).

Shit is going to go down one day.

After all the horrible shit I've read in OT, this is the first time a topic's title made me go "what the fuck."

Fuck this guy.

I understand ur ppl reaction. But let me tell you this dirty politician don't represent India. I bet this guy is from bihar the most backward place in India where politicians are murders and former rapists themselves. But the Bihar ppl still vote for them cause they high cast and control land. Here in the south our politicians are pigs too most of them but they not like sadist people. That's why south its safer for women, cause we respect and actually follow Hindu values. In the north they dirty, you all should visit Indian just make sure u don't go north.
