India state minister on rape: 'Sometimes it's right, sometimes it's wrong'

Mulayam criticised legal changes that foresee the death penalty for gang rape, saying: "Boys commit mistakes
Is it wrong if this made me lol? Like, man, how can someone have such a warped mindset and then still be taken seriously? Boys commit mistakes, oh god, that's hilarious. I guess I'm just unable to wrap my head around the fact that this man is an elected official, that people are okay with him governing a part of their lives when he makes statements like that. It's just bogus.

Yeah there is no way that second map is accurate.
It really is, unfortunately. Serial predation is a real thing, and because of that, it multiplies the effect that those people have on the rest of the population, even though they're a relatively small part of it.

Uh... uh... no.

What the fuck is wrong with you?

Clearly he doesn't think it's actually hilarious.

On that note, is that a legitimate possibility? I know that many rapes in the US happen because the guys don't have a good definition of what rape is. How many people in India not only understand that rape is rape, but simply accept it as natural?

I really have to wonder what the women are told there as they grow up.

Gotta love all the "Am staying away from India coz everyone there are rapists" mentality going on here. It seems like people are convinced that it is hell on earth by reading articles about India from most under developed states.

But hey when ever someone visits the US the first place they go to visit are the unsafe ghetto neighborhoods right?

Yes tards like this guy and a bunch of other shit politicians are the reason for most of India's problems. But to judge the whole place on things like this?

3. the existence of the caste system

Or do you think that this will just go away as long as you have a permanent underclass?

Id like to know what exactly is your definition of the caste system? Nobody is forced into certain jobs because they belong to any caste. There have been many steps from the government to provide free education/funding and get normal jobs like everyone else.

So, you don't see the implicit problem with that statement? (Hint: it's where the woman is used as a bargaining chip by her parents to extract money from the husband.)

What? I think it has more to do with the parents concern over the husband not be a bum and has enough financial support to run a family. Not just as a means to get money or something.

I read "them" as referring to the parents in the initial post, not the daughter.

Jesus fucking Christ. What is wrong with the culture in India..?

Like, I get the whole rape thing. It's obviously terrible, but I can see why someone in a sexually repressive culture would resort to it.

But then there's the whole murder and torture thing that always accompany these sad stories. I mean, how does one --no, a GROUP-- go from raping a person to making them drink acid or burning, torturing, beating and killing them?

I can rationalize almost anything usually but I can't square this away. If it was a rare thing perpetrated by a group of sickos who found each other, I could see why. But this shit happens regularly in India.
...HOW? What the fuck goes through their minds?

No witnesses.

http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/world/2014/01/15/india-rape-danish-tourist/4487395/

That article is about the 51 year old Danish tourist raped earlier this year in new Delhi near a popular shopping area. It also mentions rapes in what they describe as a tourist town as well as the infamous bus rape. So yeah it doesn't seem relegated to the clearly labeled red zones.

is there a story behind the bolded part? that sounds like incredibly painful way to torture someone to death.

I wouldnt suggest anyone to go to india. For this reason alone.

Women in India have a long, long fight ahead of them.

It tells me that they are insecure and highly frustrated individuals.

Look up the Caste system.

No one cares because the girls were Dalit in the caste chain "untouchable" and rape leading to death in India nets you the death penalty so they just don't want to kill any one over Dalit people. Sad but most likely the truth.

Things like this won't change for a long while, India's a good 100/150 years behind America.

Yesterday I was reading an Ars report about India's massive public defecation crisis (over 600m people shit in public even if there are toilets available) and how it has a direct effect on children. Due to the bacteria and parasites surrounding them, Indian children are smaller and less developed than the children in poorer African countries.

I wonder if this in-turn leads to behavioural changes? If you're surrounded by constant physical filth, could it lead to a less empathetic society where people dismiss rape as a 'social' issue of low importance?

That can't be right, can it? That's like half the freaking population. Looking at that map posted earlier, I see a strong correlation between women rights and countries where rape is prevalent.

Am I crazy or do I not see a single country that's dark green on the first map?
You're not crazy. Of the two maps, the top one is the one I think we can eventually get dark green via enough education and time. (There's a margin of perpetrator that seems.... unlikely to be able to be educated, unfortunately for the rest of us.)

That's very interesting. Had no idea Norway was ahead of Sweden.

It's also interesting that Australia and Canada, both offspring of the UK, is doing better than the mother country.

US have lots of immigrants, I wonder if that bad stats comes from them or the natives.
Canada has a larger "ratio" of immigrants, so that "defense" for the US is moot.

Also I don't know why some of you are blading India here. In the US, there are some instances of rape victims being shamed away from their homes because they had the "audacity" to report their sports playing rapists.

It's not an epidemic here

No one of the leaders in the US go boys will boys or sometimes rape is right and sometime wrong

They would get impeached or thrown out of office so fucking fast
Resigning would be least of their concern, they would become a social pariah for life

Not to mention how pathetically unreliable the police are in India. How many cases have there been where the police cover the rape up, or take part in rapping the victims themselves? A woman's "modesty" is such a big deal there, that it is used against the victim in a way to either shut them up, or straight up prevent them from even reporting a crime on the fear of social stigma.

The closest I've seen it get in the US was some elected dude at the time, talking about abortion rights (in the cases of rape) who basically implied if a woman got pregnant due to a rape, she wanted it.

Dude, are you kidding me? Maybe this sounds ridiculous to me because I'm Indian (or was, I emigrated to Canada when I was 9), but rape is as immoral in India as it is in the west. You have to remember that India is the 2nd most populous country in the world. Over a BILLION people reside in a relatively small country.

Of course we're going to have our share of lunatics. To judge an entire country so poorly based on a few crazies is fucking infuriating and I am actually angry at GAF for having this view on India.

Our culture absolutely shuns rape, and you'd be socially outcast if anyone were to find you responsible for it. There MIGHT be exceptions where the overly rich get away with such incidents because of their wealth and status, but that is a rarity and is as prevalent as it is anywhere else in the world.
