Indie Games [January] Now Voting - Post 634!

Tell them to release a demo please, otherwise hard to judge these kind of games.

I did, but they won't do it because they've already moved on to the next project (and probably think it will hurt the game more than help it - yes I pointed out that it was flawed logic but, well, I'm not their dad lol)

edit: oh hi new page. reposting:
Hey people :)

Friends of mine just released their new game, Box Out!, on Desura.
edit- oh, it's up on Desura but not released yet - it's out on Feb 11.
It's a... puzzle-platformer of sorts - you basically have several forms and have to switch between each of them to get past various obstacles, all while doing the usual platforming. It gets tricky when you have to switch several times during a single jump, with a perfect timing.

To be honest it's not really my kind of game, but if you're into super meat boy and twitch gameplay, it might be worth a try. I know it gets freakishly challenging.

Oh and if you have a question for the devs let me know, I can ask :)

Increeeedibly stupid in the Indie sector, where the most important part is getting SOME attention and most people wont just randomly buy a 5$ platformer.

Toma I'll have some free time late today so I'm going to write impressions for the Indie GOTY thread.

Edit:

Octodade: Dadliest Catch - $14.99 (PC, Mac, Linux)

Octodad: Dadliest Catch is about destruction, deception, and fatherhood. The player controls Octodad, a dapper octopus masquerading as a human, as he goes about daily life.

Octodad's existence is a constant struggle, as he must master mundane tasks with his unwieldy boneless tentacles while simultaneously keeping his cephalopodan nature a secret from his human family.

I'll edit the price when it's released.

Great, I was planning on getting around to writing a few myself, but then I was visiting a friend for a week, made a trip for another few days and now am out for cinema tonight. I really hope I can fill it up with some entries tomorrow.

I know.

Anyway, if anyone decides to give the game a chance despite the lack of a demo, let me know, I'd like to hear some impartial opinions!

I might give in a go in a bit, it looks like a sequel to Jumper which I have very fond memories of despite being god awful at.

Finally saw Indie Game: The Move. Was a fascinating and compelling documentary, definitely have a new respect (well more than I already did) for the hardship developers go through.

So Kenshi is on daily deal on Steam - where is the game at RIGHT NOW? It's always so difficult with early access where sites rush to review the release and then ignore the game from that point onwards.

I think Overgrowth has replaced Broforce as my most played indie games. 10 hours on Steam so far and none of that is idling, nor is it counting the 2+ hours I played of the DRM free version. I just love the game. The combat and movement is endlessly satisfying and the details just make the game so good, from the best blood effects of any game ever to how physics factor into everything. The editor is so easy to use, and the whole experience feels very polished, despite still being Early Access

Didn't see this one posted

Strike Vector - $19.99 (PC)

With a distinct old school feel, reminiscent to games such as Crimson Skies, Quake 3 and Unreal Tournament, Strike Vector will let you test your reflexes and skills against your friends. Team flight and mutual assistance is required to fulfill your missions but individual aiming and piloting skills are also mandatory.

Finished the demo of Aaru's Awakening. Damn, the hand drawn animations are so great. Reminds me of Ballpoint Universe or And Yet It Moves. And surprisingly tight considering it's a platformer, while other animation heavy platformers have not been as successful in the controls with their animation priority.

Arcane Worlds - $9.99 (PC)

Toma do you program support more than one formatted game per post?

Yup, more two or more formatted game per post works as well. We already included Arcane Worlds though, or is that now the full release?

On Steam, the devs said the price will be $15

Price is 14.99 according to its twitter page: https://twitter.com/octodadgame/status/427849224332398592

Pretty excited for this game, it looks great.

Thanks I updated the post.

My bad its the in early access so it must be the same version you included.

No worries, it was back in november I think. But could you delete the content of the post please? ;)

Anyone here excited for The Floor Is Jelly? It's great. The art style is both endlessly satisfying and adds to the platforming. Starts kind of simple but then more puzzle elements are layered onto the existing framework and the levels become more complex. Not the most challenging game, but definitely a fun one and a wonderfully visual experience

Will make a proper post later. Game looks cool, like Hitman: Final Destination edition. You manipulate and sabotage the environment to create perfectly timed death traps for your target. Some people might not like the visuals but I think the stark minimal style with the contrasting red blood looks great

I remember this Hero Siege game that just launched on Steam was mentioned earlier in the thread. Is this only wave based stuff? Looking at the screenshots it looks that way but the description sounds like there is more variety. The game looks cool but I hate wave-based gameplay.

Edit: Also Our Darker Purpose launched today. If you like the idea of Binding of Isaac style gameplay with some RPG and persistence elements then I would recommend giving it a look. One of my more pleasant surprises from Kickstarter.

Thanks for the link, sorry if I missed it earlier in the thread, been playing more games than reading about them this month.

After watching the video I would agree that the game seems shallow which is definitely not to my liking. Good impressions video too, you talked mostly about things I care about in a game and that is infinitely more helpful compared to many impression videos.

It's no BoI, but I like it. It's not the most complex game, but it's fun. Gets very hectic, and you can have a crazy moment of stacked relics. It's essentially an arcadey randomized dual stick action game

Looks really interesting! Keeping an eye on this one for sure. Love the UI

So Dungeonmans is finally in the top 100 on Greenlight, and the closed alpha is now underway!

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=114781779

Graphics are looking really nice even compared to the Kickstarter campaign from last year. If you're on Greenlight it's worth a 'yes' for sure :)
This is my most anticipated game of the year, it is (almost) everything I want in a modern roguelike. I hope it manages to be Greenlit prior to release, especially given some of the crap that has gone through Greenlight already.

Goddamn, I'm more and more behind on indie games by the minute. I've played a grand total of two games from those eligible for voting, and haven't tried any of the December winners except for One Way Heroics and Risk of Rain. :(

Voting
  • Vector
  • Titan Souls
  • Moments of Paranoia
  • Heroine's Quest: The Herald of Ragnarok
  • Fountain

Busy month and the little time I had to play I ended spend playing CKII, sorry Toma.

Are you, you? Play Westerado! (Its free anyway!)

Did you like Starseed Pilgrim? Play Fjords!

I dont think it flows very well for such a game, you really notice that its a mobile game from every mechanic in the game.

The IOS game is actually an expanded version of a freeware Hero Siege that was on GameJolt

I paid for it, so I guess (hope) I played the expanded version. *shrug*

Not a game we'll remember in 2-3 months.

^I can/will definitely do more over the weekend (Gone Home, Rogue Legacy, Steamworld, KRZ if Hofmann doesn't wanna do it). Need to write up my usual OP impressions thingy first, though. Was super busy this week.

Posted this as my Overgrowth Steam review. It's my favorite indie game right now, can't stop playing it

For the longest time, Broforce was my most played PC indie, but I think it's safe to say Overgrowth has supplanted that as my go-to game.

Now Overgrowth isn't complete by a long shot. It's still lacking a real campaign or story and the available content consists of a few challenges, several maps ranging from parkour-friendly courses to open areas with enemies to an arena. There's a robust level editor and a growing library of user content.

But that's not what makes Overgrowth so fun, so addicting, and challenging. In my opinion, gameplay itself is paramount to making or breaking a game, and Overgrowth delivers in spades. The combat is up there with Arkham Asylum as my favorite fighting system in a game, simple to control yet complex in its execution and endlessly satisfying to watch. From agile evasion to smooth judo counters to tense knife fights or rolling under a swinging blade and digging a spear into an enemy's chest, the combat is just glorious fun

The movement alone offers some of the best 3D platforming I've played since Prince of Persia in 2003. You're fast and insanely maneuverable, able to jump huge distances, wall run with ease, bounce between walls and roll under obstacles. Speed running through the community parkour maps is so entertaining.

But Overgrowth isn't just great in its execution, but as a whole package inside and out. The anthropomorphic animal warriors and the semi-realistic atmosphere bring to mind classics like Redwall and Watership Down, and the brutality only cements those associations. A fight isn't just a simple exchange of blows; blades and hard hits leave bloody wounds across the body, blood that drips and stains in physics-accurate patterns. Fatal impacts against hard surfaces are accompanied by crunching bone. A stealthy neck slice sends arterial spray everywhere. A tough fight leaves you bloody and battered. Dodge at the wrong time and a kick will impact your head with a tangible sense of weight and momentum. It's these aspects that make the game such an enjoyable experience

But there's more to come, from the proper integration of species like dogs, rats, and cats, and a full story. The backstory of the world has already been fleshed out in Lugaru and this fascinating digital comic (http://www.wolfire.com/comic#1) and if the game's story is as engrossing as the stories in those pages, Overgrowth could truly be the Redwall of gaming.

Interesting piece by Polygon about Akaneiro financial status.

Once Upon A Time...There was a Movable Forest - ????
screens_0007_brightness_contrast-1-copy.jpg

http://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=27464.0

Once Upon a Time… There was a Movable Forest is a perspective based puzzle game born out of Global Game Jam 2012. We’ve been in development off and on since then, hoping to expand on our game jam ideas, and eventually release a full game.
The gameplay requires solving jigsaw-like puzzles using perspective. It's a little bit like Little Big Planet in that it is a platformer with multiple layers to platform upon. The main style of puzzle we’ve been working on requires dragging the puzzle pieces around until they line up from a specific point of view. Kind of hard to explain, it’s much easier to understand when you see it.
