| 3. Introductory Blurb |
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
47 games in the released part, 60 games in the future part. We are having many, many oddball games no one has ever heard of this month, specifically IGF entries due to Wok and Hofmann scouring their database.
We will also have a vote on the best games of the month in the last week of the thread. The results for june can be seen below. For some first time readers that wonder about my definition of "recent": We didnt have any major Indie thread in 2012 on GAF, so we are also catching all the titles that slipped through our net last year. Anyway, have fun with the games from this month!
Hey! I assume you are new in this thread series and want to see what we were up to? Or you didnt have enough time to play through all of the games from the last month but still want to catch up with the best ones? Then this list is for YOU! These were the games we enjoyed the most in the previous thread, voted on by the community (More thorough descriptions and impressions in the previous thread, especially the last few pages with the voting):
SUPERHOT (13 votes) - Free (PC, Browser)
http://superhotgame.com/
The world's first first-person time-moves-only-when-you-move shooter*. To explain it simply, it's The Matrix meets Hotline Miami meets a little bit of Braid. You can just stop moving in the middle of the room, look around, see where the enemies are and then decide on the best course of action.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

MirrorMoon EP (11 votes) - $9,99 (PC, Mac, Linux)

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=670441

My god, it's full of planets! Much like Outer Wilds, a true space exploration game but here the locations and mechanics constantly switch on you. There's just surprise after surprise lurking around each dark side of the moon. I was sold after the KRZ cameo, there's so much visual wonder. One of the most dizzyingly brilliant FPSs I've ever played.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Full Bore (9 votes) - $8 for the first part (second is free after you purchased the first, release later this year) (PC, Linux)
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=689201
2D puzzle game that reminds me a bit of Catherine with its focus on nimbleness and using blocks to create paths. If you are looking for a world ripe for exploration, stacks and stacks of puzzles, beautiful pixel art, and a catchy soundtrack; Full Bore is that game.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Volgarr the Viking (6 votes) - $11,99 (PC)

http://store.steampowered.com/app/247240/

The 1-permanent-save-per-world design can be quite harsh, but in here lies one of the purest 2D action platformers around. If you're itching for a game that requires block-by-block precision, this game scratches it. Also, easily the best Viking game yet.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Naya's Quest (5 Votes) - Free (PC, Browser)
http://terrycavanaghgames.com/nayasquest/
Indie Echochrome is about right, this has some real head-spinning puzzles and it can be quite challenging if you make just the wrong direction press.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Impulse (4 Votes) - Free (PC)

http://deck16.net/impulse#Download

Picture a mash-up of Super Meat Boy and Lunar Lander. Or N+ meets Asteroids. That’s Impulse. The premise is simple. You need to guide your craft to the exit point of each level, avoiding the various obstacles and bad guys.

I noticed there are a few noteworthy, and relatively unknown, projects that deserve a shoutout here because I feel that they share a common interest with the people in this thread. I talked to the guy from Pixabyte and MetaVendetta and both are very enthusiastic about the things they love and figured you might appreciate the shoutout as well. If you enjoy anything here or want to give feedback, let these guys know via their websites or also here in this thread. If you appreciate something, let people know. A heads up can sometimes very valuable.

This is a monthly podcast series that presents notable Indie Game soundtracks. A likeable host and guests, a fantastic track selection, interesting discussions and a focus for Indies will make this one a mainstay in my monthly threads.

Castle in the Sky - $1,50 (PC, Mac)

http://www.thetalltreesgames.co.uk/CastlesInTheSky/

It's described as a videogame picture-book. Having played through it, that's entirely accurate. It's only about 10-15 mins long, but it's only $1.50 too and worth the experience. Listen to these guys -> Jenova Chen: "I played through it in one sitting. A lovely game!". There are basic adventure style puzzles, really neat sprite art plus a CRT filter, some nice shooting elements, and of course platforming (with Metroidvania style unlocks).

RimWorld follows three survivors from a crashed space liner as they build a colony on a frontier world at the rim of the galaxy. That's why RimWorld is designed as a story generator. It's not about winning and losing - it's about the drama, tragedy, and comedy that goes on in your colony.To keep things interesting, the game creates events like pirate raids, trader arrivals, and storms. But these events aren't random. RimWorld uses an AI Storyteller (modeled after the AI Director from Left 4 Dead) who analyzes your situation and decides which event she thinks will make the best story.

It's officially a "first person exploration" game developed by Galactic Cafe with brilliant narration by Kevin Brighting. I would describe it as a narrative experiment. http://www.desura.com/games/tiamat-x

Tiamat X is a rip-snortin tribute to the side-scrolling shooters of yesteryear, and would be right at home blazing away on the screen of a booming, beer-stained arcade cabinet. We will also have a vote on the best games of the month in the last week of the thread. The results for june can be seen below. For some first time readers that wonder about my definition of "recent": We didnt have any major Indie thread in 2012 on GAF, so we are also catching all the titles that slipped through our net last year. We thought it had been contained. Technical division said the firewalls were impenetrable. The network had been isolated. The EMP was the last resort, but we were certain it had worked.
But we were wrong. At 10:28AM, Impulse became sentient. The world doesn't know. It has no goddamn idea and it was all our fault.

God help us...

I don't know the date or the time. It doesn't matter anymore. I don't know how many of us are left, or if the Impulse can be stopped. I think it may have sealed off its weaknesses. But the others, they think they found a way to stop it. I don't know how much time we have. They saw the files on an old computer. It was old, and outdated, from before the incident, but still readable.

Something to do with Toma, and these Indie threads. That's our only hope now. We need to figure out what it means, how to use this against the Impulse threat. Please help us. I don't know if I have enough juice for another log. This is our last hope. Please find a way

Oh god, I made it. They're all dead....it was a trap. Jesus, it's only me now. But there's still hope. We decoded the files, just before the missiles hit. They said...that the secret to stopping the Impulse threat was here, hidden amongst these posts, somewhere on this very page. Only you can figure out the secret. It's the only way

Man, Boson X looks like somebody took the Knuckles Chaotix special stages and extrapolated them to a whole game.

That's actually kinda cool.

This is my first indie thread so I'm fucking lost.
Toma really liked a game called Impulse that was discussed in the last thread, so he's made the thread into a big in-joke about it. Unfortunately...yeah, until the joke is over, the thread's basically going to be unreadable for newcomers.

You may want to page through last month's thread until the chaos subsides.

Recap:
  • Past thread Toma got hooked by this "game" called Impulse
  • Start to show some compulsive behaviours towards the game, but we ignore because Toma aways get really excited wiith some indie games.
  • Turns out to be Impulse is some kind of entity and we're trapped here.

I'll try to copy/paste my thoughts on it to this thread when I can, but so far I'm really enjoying it.

Here's what I wrote on my Steam Activity feed:

This game is legit (so far). It very much reminds me of the GBA and DS Castlevania titles (rest in peace), except with deeper combat (combos and skill cancelling) and skill trees. It's also one of those games that just FEELS like it was made by people that love video games.
I'm going to brew a second pot of coffee and sit down with it for a few hours now.

I'd be interested to see them when you have the time. I played a bit of the Valdis Story demo/beta a while back and wasn't massively impressed by it, the combat felt a bit clunky in that build. I do wonder how it ended up.

This may be an obscure pull, but the combat is reminding me of that one good Spyro game on the GBA, Black Moon or something?

I'm about to play again, so I'll post a little in a couple of hours, maybe.
