Ingrown toenail has become infected

same. it's a weird feeling getting a gigantic needle in the foot, but after that, you just feel the weird vibration from whatever tool they use to kill the matrix and that's that.

the pain afterwards though....better get that pain prescription filled before the numbing agent wears off.
 
Don't underestimate wounds on your foot. Your foot is basically an incubator for bacteria and fungi so get yourself to a doctor ASAP or else you'll pick up a nasty infection.
 
I used to get ingrown toenails in my large toe all the time when I was younger due to me not cutting my toenails correctly. Most of the time they were pretty minor, but one time it was so bad it became infected. It was extremely painful, and even the slightest bump to my foot would make me start bleeding. Since I was young and stupid, I decided to just tough it out and not tell my parents or go to a doctor. This lasted about 2 weeks until one night while I was cleaning my toe, the entire nail just fell off. It freaked me out and I wasn't sure if it would ever grow back, but it did eventually.

Since then I've started cutting my toenails the correct way, and I haven't had any more ingrown toenails. Look up that picture someone posted earlier to see the correct way to cut them. And like others have said, go to a doctor to get it fixed.
 
I had the same thing, except mine was alot worse on both sides. Yours will continue to get worse over time and eventually it will be very sore to even walk if left untreated. Go to your doctor who should refer you to a foot doctor, its a very simple and quick procedure were they cut the side of the nail out. Its sore to walk for a week or two, but you will be glad after.
 
I had a friend who had to get an ingrown big toenail surgically fixed.

He died a few hours later.

im just kidding it was actually a couple of days later

I was really just trying to clean it out, scrape the goop out of there end give it a good soak. I hit the ingrown portion of the nail by accident and thought I'd be able to get underneath it and pry it out of there. I was wrong.
 
hopefully you go to an actual podiatrist instead of having the doctor do it. when they just did it at the doctor's office they had to put a needle through my toe and then inject the numbing sauce before they operated on it.

it didn't work the first time, so i had to go to an actual podiatrist where he just sprayed some freezing thing on it and it was pretty much painless. it was ridiculous that they put me through stabbing a needle in my toe!
 
I think both my big toes are in the early stages of being in-grown. Just a bit of pain when I hit the sides and I've noticed part of the nail goes under the overlap of skin or whatever. It was getting pus-y (LOLZ) a bit ago but I used a thumbtack and basically unbent part of it so it wasn't digging so hard. Mine aren't infected at all yet (no discoloration, no pus or discharge) so what's the best way to stop them at this early stage?

Some other people in this thread have suggested rolling up a little ball of cotton and gently pushing it underneath the ingrown portion of the nail.
You could try that?
I'm probably not the one to give out advice on ingrown toenails tho.
 
Your experience has frightened me enough to do something about it haha. Mine are definitely not at the doctor stage yet though. I'll try to nip them in the bud
 
I have had to have ingrowns surgically removed about half a dozen times. It's no big deal, but you do need to see a doctor when it gets this infected. These days when I see a warning sign I just wrench it out from the root after a hot shower; haven't had to have one taken out in about ten years. It's painful (and bloody) but not nearly as bad as dealing with an infection. My dad got so sick of the same problems, he had both of his big toenails completely removed.
 
This thread is killing me. I literally cut my toenails about 3 hours ago and I did them the wrong way :(

Am I already dead?
 
Seriously, podiatrist now!

Dealt with these a lot when I was younger and it was never a pleasant experience, but it's something you must do. My first ingrown toenail removal was without any numbing. Doctor when right under my nail and took half of it off. Never went to him again, but it was a pain that will never leave me.

Not worth trying to do you own procedures for either, as I've gone down that road too... you only prolong the inevitable.
 
Just drop a brick on your toenail as hard as you can the nail will fall off in a few weeks. You can pay me via paypal
 
that's not that bad. ive had ingrown toe nail a couple of times. first dont cut the nail on the side short, that will only make it worse. let it grow out and the get something to kind of pop the nail out from the side so its not digging in. keep it like that and it will heal. if you cant you dont have to go to a specialist and your doctor will either cut your nail or pull the whole thing out. the key here is not cutting the side of your nail short or else it will probably keep growing at a curve

Had a something similar to the OP going on with my toe a few years back. I took way too long before I finally went to a doctor and had it taken care of.


I recommend just going to a doctor and have them fix it proper. Any homemade half assed cutting you do will hurt like hell for a while and the nail will just grow back and cause you pain again.

The procedure is about as time consuming and painful as getting a filling at a dentist but with the added benefit of not getting needles in your mouth!
 
Yeah both of my big toes were ingrown when I was younger and I had to go to a doctor for it. Wound up getting a minor surgery where he cut the side of the nail growing into the skin and a bit of the flesh around it off. After that he added a chemical so the flesh wouldn't grow back and the nail would be able to grow without digging into the skin.

Best part: I got to stay awake during the whole thing and watch him hack away at my toes.

Worst part: after the numbing injection wore off the pain of having two pieces of your toes sliced off was just unreal.
 
Researching podiatrists, but I'm thinking I'll just go with my primary care. There is something about these little "foot clinics" that are not part of a major hospital system that seem shady AF to me. Maybe he can remove it himself or at least refer me to a good podiatrist in the area.
 
I had this happen some years back, not a big thing, pediatrist will freeze the toe, do a little surgery to clean out the infection and boom good as new

Because just going to a doctor at all costs money. If you can get a suggestion or two and prevent that, it's probably worth it to most people.

I don't think anyone who asks thinks the second one is the better option, but they think it's the cheaper one so they're willing to give it a shot. Blame the fact that we are behind the rest of the civilized world basically.

yea yea yea. if this was some weird bleeding than go to the doctor. this is just an ingrown toe nail. ive had like 50 of them
 
GAF and it's medical problems lately, gah. As always, if you question whether you need to see a physician, then you mostly likely do. Any primary care physician should be well-practiced in taking care of ingrown nails. There's no need to see a podiatrist especially if you have a PCP. Seeing a podiatrist is more paperwork since you would be a new patient and probably more expensive.
