Insanely slow PSN download speed, please help :(

Most of the time it's because you're grabbing from the edge server of the CDN around the same speed as the CDN itself is getting the files. Either wait for it to change a bit or pause it for 30 seconds, then resume until the speeds are consistently better from the CDN catching up.

Yeah it´s very slow here in Europe. Need 9h for Helldrivers that normally would be done in 30min or so. Man I hate this. Must be ESO related I guess ? Why is Sony is freaking incompetent in online stuff?

Edit: And I tried to change DNS and MTU but nothing worked. That´s clearly a problem of slow ass servers from Sony because the rest downloads with full speed at my home

If I have slow downloads doing an Internet Test under Network Settings, at least temporarily, gets them back up the max speeds.

If you guys could stop downloading while I finish up grabbing TLoUR that would be swell.

80 hours lol, what a joke. Downloads are faster on the damn Wii U.

Mine downloads just fine with 65 mbps speed. One thing I always do is pause and restart the download at least once. It works every time for me. Speeds go right back to normal.

Reading the OP is hard

Must've missed it, but I don't usually refer to the wired connection as Ethernet :P

I use Ethernet too and the speeds are still shit, and have gotten even worse lately. Even my wireless devices are faster than my PS4 wired. Changing the MTU to 1473 helped a little, and now my Rest Mode speeds aren't quite as slow, but I'm still not getting anywhere near what I should be getting.

That is bizarre, I just have it automatically detect stuff when i do the settings, must be an ISP thing as others have said then >_>;

You guys are downloading during peak traffic hours im assuming

Must be a lot of congestion.

Run speedtest on the browser to rule out PSN congestion

heh funny, I just bought Last of Us and PSN is telling me it will take 45 hours to download... on a 100mb fibre connection. ok then >_>

Given up, whacked it in rest mode and turned on iZombie. This wasn't what I was expecting from my first day with the console.

Their infrastructure can barely support the massive userbase at peak times apparently.

Anyone with a solid connection otherwise shouldnt have issues unless PSN is overloaded

As a test (though not the same game); I tested my download time for MGS5: Ground Zeros (3.7GB)+a 300MB patch. The patch says 3 minutes, the full game says 35 minutes. The game is downloading at about 3-5MB/s and the patch is downloading at 3-4MB/s simultaneously.

It is possible that the last of us is being hosted on a slower server? I get 3-5MB/s pretty consistently... which is not amazingly fast but is acceptable enough. Any time it is slower than that I pause and resume... which seems to speed it up. My PS4 is connected Wirelessly to a new Asus RT-AC68U router. If the servers are connected to regionally, I would be connecting to central US servers.

The 2.8GB Bloodborne update is about 60% done after 3 hours or so. That's a 20 minute download on Steam. I never knew PSN was in such a terrible state. And the fun part is I have another few games to update after this, I guess I'll just install them all before bed and leave the updates running over night.

Yeah, that's what I'm doing too. The download speeds are so painfully slow. And there are so many options missing that would be considered granted on Steam. This feels like a downgrade to Steam in every possible way, and with a stupid subscription fee attached. I think my average speed is 100-200 kb/s while on Steam I'm doing 1,3 mb/s. This on a console where so many digital games are 30-40 GB. What a joke.

You know what works for me?

Switching to Ethernet if I'm on wifi or vice versa and then switching back. It resets the connection and always returns my downloading to full speed.

Yeah, speeds are such a joke. But once upon a time, they were actually good but I think an update caused them to go down the crapper for me.

Mine were awful, even when it's sitting right next to the router. Just gave in and am running an Ethernet through my house

Edit: oh just noticed you are wired...idk then. Back when I was wireless, it took almost a full day to download watch dogs. But my speed was relatively ok

The only way you're going to get better speeds is by getting away from your local cdn nodes to somewhere less congested by using a proxy. Pick an overseas one where it's night time.

I mean it's 1:11am in the UK, surely our node or whatever can't still be so busy that I still can't break 100KBs? It's going to take 10 fucking hours for the Destiny update :D

EDIT: After lowering my MTU even further down to 1430 I'm now getting my max speed, Destiny has gone from 10 hours to 40 minutes. Hopefully it'll stay like this.

Edit: It downloaded fully at max speed. And now MGS is downloading at max speed as well, so fingers crossed the MTU change actually fixed it. I had previously tried 1493, 1450, 1470 and 1500 with no luck but 1430 seems to have done the trick.

It's more likely that the cdn finally had enough capacity to serve you. Making your MTU smaller is going to adversely impact your online gaming performance.

I tried this and it just worked for me and all! I'm from the UK too. It's now taking me 14 minutes to download 4GB which is cool.

True but how bad are the cnd servers if they can't handle traffic at 1 in the morning? Why is it that even Nintendo has better download speeds with their infamous online network than Sony does? Practically every digital game services outpaces PSN with ease on the same connection.

I'm going to test the MTU thing now. Downloading Skulls of the Shogun.
It's a 522 MB game and a 60MB patch.

Auto MTU:
The patch downloaded super fast, seemed like close to max speed, and finished in a few seconds.
The game itself is crawling at ~200kB and has an estimated 44 minutes left.

That's already extremely strange and suggests that some servers are just broken and I got lucky that I connected to a good one for the patch. Will update with more results

EDIT:
I paused the download a few times and restarted the PS4, no changes. Played around with MTU, no changes. But there is something that did fix my speeds and it's a bit baffling.
My ethernet connection goes from the router with a single cable to a 4-way switch under my desk that connects to my PC, PS3 and PS4. First of all, I get the same speed and no connection issues on any of the 4 ports on the switch on my PC. Not with the PS4 though.

I'll explain just using 2 ports. At first my PS4 was connected to port 1. SotS downloaded with ~200kB/s and nothing I did changed that. Then I paused the download, connected the cable to port 2 and resumed again. PS4 now downloaded the game with ~3MB/s and finished it in a few minutes. Connected to port 1 again. Slow speed. Connected to port 2 again. Fast speed!
Then I let the PS4 connected to port 2, did some stuff on the PC and tried again. Slow speeds now. on port 2 as well . Port 1 again: Slow. Switched to port 2 again: Fast speed again.

What? How is this happening? I'm not ruling out that there are problems in my network, but this doesn't happen with any other device. What is the PS4 doing that it has such a big problem with certain network configurations? Restarted switch, PS4 and router again. Same thing.

Tested to connect via WiFi to rule out the switch: Speeds are slow.
Back to LAN, tried switching around ports again: Can't get fast speeds anymore.

I'm lost

EDIT: A few minutes later, now I'm only getting fast speeds
Tried DMZ on or off, different static IPs, nothing has any consistent results. At least my speeds are fast right now. The strategy for me seems to be pause download -> unplug cable and put it back in -> resume download -> repeat until speeds are fast, then don't touch anything. This actually works quite well so far

It was terrible for me when I bought my ps4, took two fucking hours to download the latest firmware update.

Then the TLOU patch (which was much bigger) downloaded at my normal speeds.

It's up and down all the time, and not what I'd expect when I pay for ps+.

It's the only thing I'm unhappy about as far as the ps4 experience goes.

Because it might not be true. Anecdote is not the plural of data.

I have no doubt they are spotty speeds in some places – enough noise about it to roughly confirm that – but as someone who has always had really fast downloads, both on PS3 and PS4, it is confusing to me why this would be.

I have wondered if anyone had messed around with a VPN to try and improve PSN speeds. Previously I thought the PS3 simply had crap wifi and/or didn't play nice with some less popular or cheap routers. Now I'm not sure.

Switching to wireless solved my download speed problem. Needless to say this is the most ass backwards shit ever.

LOL. This makes no sense, but whatever.

I run PS4 wired, and it's just the PSN. Every other device in my house can peg my 60 meg connection, but the PS4? It's straight up DSL speeds at best. I bought the Witcher 3 digitally, and thank Christ they allowed preloads. Or I would have been better off buying the game overseas and having UPS ship it in a rubber raft.

This workaround was suggested in another thread. It works for me (at least most of the time). But Sony definitely should fix this...

Here's what I do, and it definitely works for me.

Once you start downloading a game:

1) Pause the accompanying game update file if there is one.
2) Pause your actual game download.
3) Go to Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection.
4) Once finished, go un-pause your game download first.
5) Hopefully watch the estimated time drop considerably.
6) Then you can try un-pausing the update file as well, but this tends to slow the game download a bit for me.

Let me know if this helps you! My hunch is that maybe the PS4's connection to PSN servers need to be refreshed once it's been turned on from Rest Mode, which I suspect allows files to be downloaded at a slower speed since the console isn't being used.

Can you guys post speedtest numbers from the PS4 browser?

I highly doubt any of you with a good internet connection are having any hardware or setup issues

It HAS to be server side and the workaround you guys are doing might just be connecting you to a different server on PSN

Most probably it´s related to Sonys CDN (mostly Akami). And yes, the workaround leads to re-establish the server connection.

personally i think it's a design flaw in the os that's the cause of the slow download speeds, i think they only allow downloads to use a certain percentage of the available bandwidth so you can still play games online and use spotify/netflix/youtube. or it's PSN. but it's so consistently shit it can't be PSN...can it?

i've been using my ps3 again and the download speeds on that are better than the ps4. my 3ds is probably faster at downloading than the ps4 along with every other wireless console i've ever used.

I really do think it's down to the way the PS4 handles sharing the bandwidth, like downloads are designed to only take 10% of available bandwidth while the console is on and that's why downloads are better in rest mode.

Danke Nerix ;)

(At least my Evil Within Download jumps from 52hours to 35 hours. Thats ok. I want to download 28gb with my 100k connection. The MTU trick only works for a few minutes.)

I have 120mb internet, have been downloading Wolfenstein for about 36 hours now and it's about half way done. Completely daft.

If I don't have an overnight download to spare I always pull the really big games via my PC these days with PSX Download Helper. A few minor setup steps beats waiting hours when PSN only wants to use 10% of my bandwidth.

I have a wired connection that gets about 10 mbps for some reason on the connection test (should be way faster) and Killzone is apparently gonna take 5 days to download.

Yeah, it's unacceptable. I used to get great speeds the first year but after that it dropped off massively. I top out at half of what I used to and average 300k per sec. I don't need it back to the 12MB per sec I got before but even a consistent 6MB is heaven compared to the 300k I settle all. It's a throttle they've implemented on their servers since you can start multiple downloads and they'll all go the same speed.

They don't throttle in my experience.

The pause-start trick works most of the time for me, sometimes I have to do it multiple times. Once in a blue moon it settles on speed like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HUXkKv3yJVQ but usually its a 1/4th of that.
