Installing a console in enclosed cabinet - bad idea?

You have to be careful as ventilation is really important. I'm pretty sure the thing that killed my PS3 was playing the last of us with the cabinet closed shut.

I've been thinking about tearing off the cardboard backing of the cabinet and replacing it with a wire mesh so the entire back side is completely exposed, but still darkened.

Don't even have to do wire mesh, you can buy that mesh that goes on speakers, its fine fabric that allows air flow.

We had this issue while I was configuring a set up for a group environment. We bought some USB-powered fans designed to be installed in the back of cabinets. Worked like a charm, and only run when the console is on to give them power.

Last cabinet, I used a hole saw and installed a a few long-lasting fluid dynamic bearing computer case fans (wired to an AC adapter).

Current cabinet I am just opening the door when the ps4 is in use.

I open the doors while I'm playing for ventilation, and then close them after the system powers down. You cannot run them while the doors are closed unless the back is open, you have a fan, or or the front has a mesh panel to let the stuff get cool air.

Also, heat rises, so be sure to place your hottest systems (i.e. PS4) on the very bottom.

You willing to build custom doors? if so, use speaker cloth on a thin frame to build them. (I have a custom built-in setup like this for my basement)

Examples: http://www.ikeahackers.net/2010/08/contemporary-concealed-entertainment-center.html

- Speaker cloth hides the consoles well, and provides excellent ventilation
- Speaker cloth also allows RF and IR singals to pass through. No need for repeaters

If you can also go backless, you will have zero problems.
