Intermittent Fasting

I do the 5/2 diet (I fast every tuesday and thursday) and it's been fucking amazing. Weight, blood work and overall health has improved a lot and I wasn't even that unhealthy to begin with.

Beer gut? Gone.
Borderline blood pressure? Gone.
Borderline blood sugar? Gone.

It seriously feels like some voodoo magic.

And I'll tell you what, the hardest part about fasting is the social part. A lot of people think its weird and don't understand it.

Full fast?

This seems very doable. I have a couple questions though. Is the Berkham method everyday? The 9pm to noon fast and a 4pm work out would be perfect for me. Also are there any larger fasts to work into the plan?

Everyday.

Fasted cardio is any type of cardio on an empty stomach (in fasted state). Generally pretty low intensity though.

Surprised that no one has come to talk about how important and critical breakfast is yet :P

Damn... I can't do a full 24 hours... I'll have to try it though. My "fasting" technique was getting annoying.

Some days are harder than others. For example the Tuesday after Thanksgiving weekend (where I devoured leftovers all weekend) I was craving food all day. It felt like my body kicked into overdrive trying to process all that food and it wasn't done yet. lol

One side effect that is AWESOME about fasting is the first meal you eat after a long day of fasting is like the best meal ever. You are in sensory overlord (smells, tastes, etc). So good.

Watched something on BBC about this recently, was very interesting. Also something about needing only 3 minutes a week of high intensity workout to see increased insulin sensitivity.

Lol, you don't have to tell me that. I'm Muslim. =P

I fast ~29 days a year. Not 24 hours, but after a 9 hour summer day. Dinner is delicious.

it was called - Eat, Fast and Live Longer and it was a revelation. I've been doing it since, fasting for 2 days at a time and it's done wonders for me. I've lost a 12lbs in weight in so far, my skins looks clearer and I generally feel a lot better thsn I used to.

I guess I do this?

You tell me. Myself, my brother, and my dad (for thirty years)--none of us experience hunger until about 4pm. We just eat one meal a day. We have little desire to do it differently.

This didn't improve my physique at all until I started a very forgiving variation on the paleo diet. Now I can control my weight and body fat percentage very easily. (I also run two miles a day)

I'm gonna do this. When I was at my thinnest I was doing this without realizing. Im 5' 10" and bounce between 235 and 225. I stil got some muscle from my heavier lifting days, but I need to get below 200lbs.

Just started the LG program a few weeks back and I am loving it.
I was going low-carb diet with huge amounts of working out (5-6 times a week) and it was getting frustrating since I wasn't seeing too many gains and couldn't get rid of that stubborn fat around my waist.
Since the whole carb-cycling and counting macros thing, I've been feeling great and it's nice to get some decent food with a great amount of variety. I don't really get hungry at all anymore and it's a lot better than that frustrating 6-8 small meals a day bullshit.

Is there any way to stick to this diet without looking like an anti-social recluse?

I diet with IIFYM and it works for the most part. If I know I'm going out at night, I basically just skip breakfast and have a small lunch. Similarly if I'm doing some sort of brunch or early morning gathering.

The meal timing windows appear too restrictive and I can't imagine training fasted.

Low Glycemic?

I was reading up on this just recently, it's something I'm definitely interested in. how are you finding keeping your GI down? is it tough? are the replacement foods for those you stopped eating satisfactory?

One of my friends who happens to have a doctorate and is currently working at a research department within the local university informed that he's doing a new study on fasting and it's possible positive correlation with extending life expectancy. Apparently, the average life expectancy of U.S. citizens went up significantly during the Great Depression and Lee thinks it might be due to involuntary intermittent fasting. I believe he mentioned that fasting young aids in the regeneration of cells later in life.

what about stunting growth?

I didn't actually stop eating any foods, and in fact I've been eating more and a way wider variety too. I don't see any kinds of problems so far and IF/LG is definitely something I would recommend if you're not the kind of person to whine about skipping breakfast or whatever.

I don't know what you mean about the low glycemic and GI stuff though.

It's pretty similar, but you're doing something more akin to the Warrior Diet. Herschel Walker also only eats one meal a day and has been doing that for years. He's also a genetic freak, too.

I do the same fast and you are dead on. I look forward to my meals and enjoy them much more.

Doesn't make sense. Are you sure you just didn't do it wrong or ate too much?
Stuck to my windows and counted/weighed my calories, so yup. The hunger was gone; but so was any semblance of weight loss.

It isn't a myth--your body can alter its metabolism to adapt to a fast. I suppose I'm just in a minority. But then again, every person's body is different.

I actually like planning my post-workout meals and the thought of devouring all that delicious food just makes me pump harder in the gym. I feel like I actually enjoy food now.
Counting macros and eating clean/whole foods is actually making me experiment with different ingredients and recipes too, so that's always awesome.

I wish I could do 24 hours. 16 hours is pushing it being a Type 1 diabetic. I don't get to have that extreme amount of control over when I have to eat something, if my blood glucose is low, have to take in some sugar.

Sucks.

I can do 24 hours very easily. That's why I like it, it's completely effortless to me
except for the stupid acidic stomach >>>:(((( it's not hunger, my stomach gets ultra upset and I hate the heartburn
.

I did complete day off fasting a few times a week, starting earlier this year. Dropped about 50 pounds. Still do it, at least once a week, sometimes more.

Anyways, so the weight loss it worked great for me, but I can't really do fasted workouts. Either I didn't try hard enough, or I fasted too long before I made it out the door, but for both cardio and weightlifting I need to do that on an eating day, or else I just don't have the energy.

I'm fasting right now and I feel amazing. My diet has been really terrible over the last year and I can feel it in just about every part of my body. Only problem is that once my fast is over, I have a pretty much insatiable appetite.

I started fasting 3 weeks ago, and thought I was eating like shit because it was the holidays. Little did I know I didn't gain a pound. Could've sworn I put on 3 lbs.

Gonna have to come back to this thread later and get some knowledge, atm though I'm still trying to gain weight though.

I've been meaning to try something like this. I think I'll start the Eat Stop Eat method today after lunch (works best with my schedule).

So 3PM Thursday until 3PM Friday. Here goes nothing!

Subscribing. I'm starting IF in January. Not because of a dumb New Years resolution, but because I started strength training January 2012.

Dude, do one better and start today. There's no real reason to, part of the beauty in IF is that it works even with holidays.

I've asked on /fit/ before but I can only go to the gym at night, so the typical 1-9 feeding window prevents me from working out fasted. Is it a big deal that I exercise after my feeding window?

I did leangains / IF for two months before I had shoulder surgery and I had EXCELLENT results (though it was mostly muscle memory, I did pack on quite a bit of muscle without gaining much fat).

Leangains / IF with a really clean diet = you should get at least SOME results.

I don't think it'll matter that much. It shouldn't stop you from doing it.

Umm wow. That's a massive change.
It's interesting because you drink like 1000 calaries for breakfast and the coffee tastes delicious, I do it with her once and a while just because I like the coffee.

water weight
It's important to note this. Don't be deceived by how much you lose at first, it is almost always water weight. And once you stop fasting you will automatically gain about 10 lbs. People should know that before hand because they often get discourage or say it doesn't work because they gain that water weight back.

Question;

I like running late at night after I come home. Will I still be able to do this?

Say I start the Bulletproof Fasting program. It says not to eat after 8pm. I run around 10pm. Is it 'healthy' to fast and run 5-10k and not eat anything after?

Generally you want your biggest meal (60+% of your daily calories) to come right after a workout. You can either shift your eating window to fit your night workout schedule, or just eat ~40% of your calories during the day and make your post-workout meal the big one of the day.
Fasted workouts are nice but I don't think it's necessary to see massive results. I have no clue, but you can check out the part here where he has a schedule for later workouts and PWO meals.

The best part about the IF/LG routine is that it can be highly modified to fit most schedules and lifestyles.

I occasionally fast, but not for potential health benefits.
The way I see it, with the relatively easy access most individuals have to food in the west, one very rarely goes really hungry. Most people have never gone without food for more than a day most likely, and very, very few has actually starved. In my opinion, this makes it harder to empathize with the situation of individuals who actually do starve and suffer.

This is honestly pretty much how I've always lived lol

My first bit of food is usually lunch and then I never eat at night.

So is fasting the new fad thing?

The gluten free fad must be coming to a close.

I wonder what's next.
I'm going to stay away from gluten the rest of my life. I eat it occasionally and I have no real problems with it but I feel so much better when I avoid grains in general.

The concept makes sense, for those doing the paleo thing it's right in line with early human eating patterns when meals were an uncertainty.

Did you inject at all during it? I made it to 21 hours the other day (I ate because I was driving afterwards, being a bit cautious) without injecting the whole time (save for my long term glargine injection at night). Sugars were between 5-6 mmol/L nearly all day, was great. Although I may still be in the honeymoon period...
