Internet/technology things that seem simple to everyone but you

Same here, I can see the difference between 720p and 1080 but between 30 fps and 60 fps...Okay sometimes I can see a bit of a difference but it's very rare.
I feel sad and feel like I'm missing some kind of awesome experience.

Sound, I can hear the difference between really crappy headphones and good ones but outside from that I don't understand much.

I can't tell the difference between 480i and 1080p.

Alright, if someone posted a comparison picture I could tell you "Yeah, they're different."
But, when actually playing, it doesn't make a bit of difference to me.

Twitter and hashtagging. I get links to tweets and everyone is tweeting but I have no idea who is talking to who.

Also this.

Also pretty much any "social networking" thing.

here's a webm that can help you with that: http://puu.sh/aU2pn/ba83554d63.webm

Shit this is the bane of my existence

Pentools2.jpg

It just doesn't make sense for me, I seems to behave on it's own. A major hurdle that was limited my art career significantly. Especially on Illustrator, holy shit.

my mind doesn't have the capacity to understand how silicon chips and ones and zeros translate into mario, neogaf, music, whatever. analogue technology i get but digital just makes no sense to me.

There is a section in the chip that maps the literal on and offs of physical transistors to low level instuctions:

11000101 00000011
->
MOVLW 0x03

So a bunch of physical 'ons' and 'offs' just told the cpu to move the number 3 somewhere.

You can translate higher level code to a bunch of these simple instructions:

int x = y + 4;
->
MOVLW 0x04
ADDWF 0xF8
MOVFF 0xF8, 0xF0

Add in a couple thousand lines of higher level code and you can really get stuff done.

Holy shit, this.

I've been using photoshop for like 15+ years... And I still have no clue how to really use the pen tool in PS, Illustrator, or anywhere else it could appear. I've watched scores of YouTube videos on it and while I kind of get it... I still don't/

Have you tried the WOW! books? The one I read was back in the CS3 days, but it did a really good job of teaching the pen tool. Might be worth a read if you're still interested in learning.

Routers, static IP. What?

Routers are pretty straight forward. Think of it as a guard at a gate to an office building. You tell the guard I want to see this website and the guard sends out the request. When the website responds, it tells the guard here's the site, and the guard knows where you are located and gives you the site.

Static IP is also straight forward. Everything has a numbered address, just like the number addresses on a house. If you don't have a static address, you'll be given a random number. If you have a static address, you'll say I want to always be this number and you keep that number.

This. I want to build a PC one day, but PC parts and lingo are all really daunting to me.

This isn't too complicated. It's almost like LEGOs. You have the case, the motherboard which is what everything is plugged into, the CPU which is the main processor, your GPU which is your graphics card, RAM which is the memory for the computer, and a hard drive to store data on. That's essentially all you need.

You just plug the CPU into the CPU slot, you plug the GPU in one of the card slots. You plug the RAM into the slot for memory. You screw mount the hard drive and then attach a cable to between that and the motherboard.

That's more or less all there is to putting the parts together.

Well, you have to make sure that you have the right CPU for that particular motherboard, among other details.

Twitter = Still have very little idea what I'm doing on there. I can read alright so if someone posts tweets I know who it's directed at.. Sometimes. <_<

Reddit = Interface NIGHTMARE. Fuck that noise. Same for 4chan. Imageboards make my brain explode.

Social Media = New social media like Tumblr or Instagram or Snapchat... The seemingly worldwide desire to share pictures/photography with everyone else in the world is such a foreign concept to me that all these new social media services taking off based PRIMARILY on pictures/photography inherently leaves me out of the loop. :/

The last social media service I jumped on was Facebook. <_<

Cars = Don't really understand that much about their internal functions, but I know enough to get by and keep mine functioning well.. and definitely couldn't identify different models from other models.

4chan
I've been using the web a lot since 2005, and I still don't understand how to navigate that site. I don't think I really want to either

It's very easy, bear with me for a while.

The "pace" of your timeline (aka your main screen) depends on how many people you are following and how much they are tweeting. So if you follow few people and they don't tweet much, your timeline won't move as much.

Now, there are different kinds of tweets that can appear in your timelines. First of all, "normal" tweets that are directed to no one in particular/everybody. They don't have a particular recipient so it's there for all to see. Other kinds of tweets are directed to a particular user, they are prefaced by a "@[username]". If you don't follow the recipient of that tweet, you won't see it on your timeline. If you DO follow that user, then you will see it.

The last kind of stuff you will see on your timeline is a retweet. It basically means a user you follow has "shared" with everyone a tweet made by someone else. It can mean an endorsement, a satire, or just a means of sharing information. If you want to retweet something to YOUR followers, there's a small symbol under every tweet that allows you to do so (it looks like a couple of arrows pointing at each other).

I hope it's a bit clearer for you!

In general, how does someone just know off the top of their head the best HDMI cable to use? Where are people looking when discovering sites or memes or information before it becomes widely known? How are people aware of unpromoted keyboard shortcuts or handy software and programs for every little thing?

For home products and tech reviews, Wirecutter and Sweet Home are pretty awesome.

Download 4chanX. Makes a bunch of things more manageable, though I like the base site as well. Or don't.

Most tweets are just shouts into the ether. You can read the tweets of people who are on your follow list (they're dumped into a huge listing by time), but unless a person's name is tagged at the start of a tweet, it isn't directed at anyone.

Thanks! That does help a lot. :D

Making GIFS. I have no idea how people manage to make not only high quality gifs that are small in size and are funny to watch, but how quickly they can do it. Props to Nibel and ElTorro, they have a gift.

I am going to try and recreate the Treasure Master kid walking gif in GIMP at some point though, just to see how it goes.

Knitting (which is absolutely a technology). I've had like a billion girlfriends try to teach me over the years and I just can't get the tension or hold the needles properly.

"everyone buy me?"

No. There's nothing.

That said, trying to implement OpenID on a website was a headache and a half last time I did it (which was a few years ago).

That's the only thing that comes to mind.

Photoshop
Smartphones

I'm a guy who likes tweaking routers with custom firmwares, set up computer networks, etc.

OSX, at best I can do the same things I can do on windows, but slightly different and sometimes I have to google how to do <thing>. At worse I'll need apps to do some basic stuff (window snapping for example).

I really don't see any benefit in it.

I've been checking out Reddit more and more recently and threads on there look like garbage thanks to layout. It's all over the place.

Twitter and reddit are a nightmare for me. So much so I just don't mess with it anymore. Probably missing alot of stuff but oh well

Reddit = Interface NIGHTMARE. Fuck that noise. Same for 4chan. Imageboards make my brain explode.

Reddit and Adobe Illustrator. I just don't get any of the 2.

Reddit mobile >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> desktop reddit

If you're on Android, download Reddit Sync. If you're on iOS, download Alien Blue.

If you don't get it:

There are thousands of "subreddits" on the site in the form of /r/insertsubnamehere. You post anything and everything related to the topic in its respective sub. So on reddit.com/r/videos people post and comment on well, videos. If something is good, it will get upvotes. Get enough of upvotes and it will be on /r/all (the front page) for a little bit. Front page is great for entertainment and news. Subreddits are great little sub-communities.

Rooting a phone, with something like CyanogenMod. It completely escapes me.

How does it know how to retain your phone number?
How does it know how to reconnect you to Google?

It's the one thing I can't wrap my head around.

My limited understanding of what rooting actually does is that it just gives you access to the "root" directories of the phones files. It doesn't change the way your phone communicates with any cell towers/carrier activation, it just lets you and any apps you download access parts of the phone that are intentionally blocked off by the manufacturer and carrier.

CyanogenMod, I believe, is just a custom OS that can be installed after gaining root access within your phone. I haven't used it myself.

Again, that's from my own limited knowledge of it. It's kind of like administrator user accounts on computers.

I was just going to post a thread asking for help understanding twitter. After being incessantly harassed to tweet at PAX this year it became abundantly clear I do not understand the value of twitter for anything other than marketing. It's driving me crazy because it seems to fly in the face of logic for me. Most Software is created to make tasks easier or more convenient, but nothing about twitter seems to address a problem or make something convenient for your average person. What does twitter do that makes it invaluable to someone like me, who isn't trying to create a brand?

I think it's a great way to get certain types of information. News in particular can be really interesting via Twitter, and I also use it a lot like I used to use RSS. In fact it's replaced bookmarks for me as well, because if I find a site I like I usually just add them on Twitter. Don't force it though, if you don't like it you don't like it!

I do think that being hassled by other people to tweet this or that at some event is probably a crummy introduction to the platform.

I don't get the appeal of RSS, of course. I will just check the same 4-5 sites manually because that's the way it was done before.

But, how about those bezier curves? It's second nature now. It's not difficult after 5 years of using them.

Thanks for the response, I think I can see where that would be useful as something like a simplified RSS feed (Although Flipboard already fulfills this function to a greater extent for me), especially with the text alerts it has. As far as being introduced to it, I've had a twitter for years, I just never bothered to use it personally. However, In recent years I've started to antagonize it as marketers have really been pushing the online social marketing thing. That's why I wanted to get some perspective outside my own semi-jaded opinion. It's just hard because it was really off-putting at PAX for me this year, I felt more like a tool than a guest, so it pushed me over my boiling point.

I never figured out how to use torrents/bittorrents or whatever they're called. It's been several years since I've tried though.

It's just an alternative way to download files between peers (Computers) by breaking a file into smaller chunks. This allows for people who have begun downloading to also (Seed) upload the file to others even without the complete file. This way download speeds can be drastically increased compared to congested networks (Like game patches of old where you had to access the games site, or another mirror). Typically it's associated with pirating, but it can have its uses for sharing files between friends/colleagues without hosting it in the traditional sense.

What?...

Are you like 80 or something?...
Erm, no, 27.

What do you mean "awareness"? Can you not tell or see the difference between high and low framerates? There's no technical know-how involved with this.
Maybe awareness was the wrong way to put it. I know what framerate is, I just can't notice the difference. People on the gaming side act as if I'm saying I don't know left from right or up from down. I hear people talking about how this game is 30FPS and that game is 60 FPS. How do they know? I'm playing Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze at the moment and I couldn't tell you how many frames there are. I can tell you I'm good at the game, that I admire the art, that I love the various mechanisms place, but I don't know what the framerate is. I'm too busy just enjoying the game.

There was that whole uproar about Mario Kart's missing frame. I might as well be looking for one slightly shorter strand of hay in a stack because I can tell for shit which frame is repeated.

How old are you? From the looks of it you are at least in your late 30s... that or your curiosity on the things you are using is six feet under.
27. I think I just grew up learning what interested me and kind of stopped recently after getting married, starting a job, having a child, etc. I mainly write creatively, so using computers has never necessitated the need for advance knowledge beyond Microsoft Word. If course I know more than that, just not as much as others.

I think I've learned that your brain just switches off absorbing information if it doesn't need it. I haven't bought a new laptop or PC in quite a while so I haven't needed to look up developments in that particular area. I'm not artistic so I'm instantly at a disadvantage with Photoshop. Guess everything knows a lot about what they want to know.

It's the one thing I can't wrap my head around.

It's basically a new phone when you install a new ROM. So it just recognizes your SIM and uses that, and then you have to log back into your Google account.

I never figured out how to use torrents/bittorrents or whatever they're called. It's been several years since I've tried though.

More games than just internet...but...MOBAs and Minecraft

I have no idea what the fuck those are supposed to be

Seeing so many people mention Twitter, and I agree.

There's actually an interesting article about how Twitter recognizes it is difficult for casual users, yet that is where growth must come:

The trouble may have its roots in Twitter’s own interface, which has awaited a serious overhaul for years. There’s a reason dedicated users read their Twitter feeds on programs such as TweetDeck and scoff at twitter.com. It remains difficult for casual or prospective users to browse the site or learn to tweet. Its private-messaging tool is anemic, as is Discover, a barely used news tab. Perhaps most important, Twitter’s real-time flurry makes it tough for less-than-constant users to check their feeds quickly or efficiently. Top managers have debated changes to basic elements of Twitter’s user interface since at least 2011, when co-founder Jack Dorsey was still in charge of the service’s look and feel. A slew of executives have spun through the company’s revolving door after failing to fix these problems. The job now falls to Daniel Graf, Twitter’s fourth head of product in five years.

Making GIFS....

This x100

Like I have no idea where or how you guys are capable of making such high quality ones too which is why the GifYouTube thing some weeks back was a godsend for me even if it's not up to snuff as traditional ones.
