I know, it's totally unreal. This is one of the first apps I've seen that is a legitimate instrument from the moment you start it up. The learning curve is really gentle and the sound is beautiful. I need to convince my band to let me use this on stage. Will be challenging, my guitar player hates apple with a passion...

Siiiick! Where you you get your app info from man? Seems you're always on the cutting edge with the new shit. The iKaossilator looks badass, it shall be mine! My buddy was talking about buying the real deal, he's gonna be jealous of this baby.

That link for the Animoog is a great resource too. I got to use my Animoog at band practice this past week to do some synth bass, it worked really well. Even my anti-apple guitar player had to admit he was impressed. Looking forward to confounding soundguys with it at my next show.
 
Heya man, I have a mixture of electronic music production feeds like Rekked, Create Digital, wire to the ear and stuff and also a few app feeds like appshopper all on my igoogle home page which I check like OCD. I'm just glad someone else is enjoying iOS for making noise!
 
bought iMaschine and it's a superbly designed sampler for iOS. Finally someone melded it to work for the format. Great stuff, especially how the bars just roll on for how long you record. Sampling is easy, vox recording is easy, good, simple, fast & fun stuff.

When do you get that error? I can send you the zip file with the presets if you like, then just extract them and drag them into the Animoog app in iTunes when you have your iPad connected.

Here's most of my review of meta.DJ that's currently sat in the pending queue on TheSixthAxis... ;)

Note that this hasn't yet been edited, ignore typos etc.

...meta.DJ (almost literally) has no limitations. Sure, you can still ‘DJ’, but the traditional ‘deck’ view is replaced with a more modern sideways graph of the track – it’s scrubbable, cue-able and starts instantly, but it’s a lot easier to jump where you want and it’s effortlessly smart.

Case in point: automatic, ridiculously fast beat matching, which breaks down the track into 4/4 blocks in a matter of a few seconds... ...even the cueing manages to just ‘work’ and always keeps your tracks perfectly in sync.

...Each [space] has its own level, there are two crossfaders and you can drop records (complete with cue points) into a ‘dock’ at the bottom, and then save that ‘set’ for later use.

However, and here’s where meta.DJ really starts to kick arse – any of those four spaces can be a drum machine, sample player or looper. The drum machine comes with a load of samples and styles built in, and can be triggered manually or set to sync and loop along with the track...

...The loop section is actually a fully fledged Looptastic (from the same devs) complete with cute little blocks of sound that can be dragged about and faded in and out – all of the above have additional sets available from the in-app store, and there’s some free goodies too along with the ability to import your own stuff.

...Everything matches perfectly, the range of effects (three per block, all holdable and tweakable) work flawlessly and some, like the stutter and the inbuilt ability to loop, can transform a track or a mix completely...

The only issue I can find is that there’s no ‘nudge’ for the decks and there’s no option to change the pitch of tracks.

...Regardless, meta.DJ is hugely ambitious, but lives up to the challenge...

I have all the files. I get the error when I try to put them in "Animoog Documents" in iTunes.
 
i now have two ipads. if i wanted to record stuff from various apps on one into garageband on the other, what would be the best way to do it - two camera connection kits and a male-male USB cable, or is it more complex than that?

You'll probably need a couple of these, or something functionally similar.

Thx for the review man, meta.dj sounds great. Apparently you can also use it with the Numark iDJ controller, I bet it really comes alive with that.

Hmm, from what I've read that can be caused by zonealarm or using a USB hub, but most people get it when they try to sync. You aren't syncing are you? Just dragging and dropping the preset files yeah?

I still use this to record from one idevice to another, but there might be newer solutions out.

Nope, I suspect they might be prepping an iMaschine Pro for the iPad or something similar, but for now the iPhone version stills runs good in 2x mode.
 
Figured I'd bump this topic by mentioning that Tabletop is down from, uh, many dollars to just $.99. A complete steal!

I'm starting to get proud of my music app collection on both my iPad and my iPhone:

Animoog now has background audio support, this is huge. I now recommend a killer combo. Step Poly Arp, which is a bad-ass step sequencer:

In 'Settings' on the Step Poly, set Midi Out to StepPolyArp Virtual Midi Out..

In 'Setup' on the Animoog, select Background Audio (it should be green))and select StepPolyArp Virtual Midi Out as the MIDI input.

In 'Env/Mod' on the Animoog set the Control to Velocity.

Open a pattern preset from StepPolyArp
4-finger swipe or double-tap home to go to Animoog
Open a patch preset from Animoog
4-finger swipe or double-tap home to go to StepPolyArp
Start playing keys, or use the 'Latch' feature to keep a pattern running.
4-finger swipe between the apps to tweak the sound and the sequence.

It's crack, but for your ears.
 
that's awesome fusebox. now I can have beatmaker control animood and vice versa via virtual midi. iPad audio production is making me abandon my hardware slowly but surely.
 
I know! I'm using it as a bridge at the moment though, I plugged my iPad running StepPolyArp straight into my DSI Tetra the other day via a USB cable using camera connection kit. StepPolyArp even recognised it and listed it as DSI Tetra under MIDI out and away I went, very vibey.

I'm definitely getting one these one day:

man I was about to purchase the io dock last week, but I read it's incompatible with ios5. waiting on the firmware update before I pull the trigger. right now I'm running a beringher UCA interface into the cam connection kit and it rocks. $22 on amazon.

I've got a set of yum-cha USB <-> MIDI cables that work with the camera connection kit as well, but I'd like to start using the line-out for audio instead of passing my audio out through the headphone jack.

edit: Actually that iOS5 issue might be fixed now,

Great recommendation on the Animoog + StepPolyArp combo, Fusebox. Mr. Colson just earned 12 bucks from me. I'm also looking to grab the ioDock, maybe I'll throw it on my christmas list since it appears to have had a price drop recently to 199.99 MSRP. Cheers!

...I'm guessing from the name that StepPolyArp supports polyphony? I've got a tune in AniMoog that I'd love to be able to sequence properly so I don't have to play to a click with my wonky timing. It's a bit pricey for what it is though... are there any cheaper alternatives?
 
PolyStepArp does support polyphony, yes. It felt risky putting in 11.99 for something with no reviews and no ratings, as it is "just" an arpeggiator. On the flip side, it's an incredibly full-featured arpeggiator with a level of control/ease of use that I've yet to see in several of the music production apps for the iPad. It does one thing, and does it very well.

Thanks for the info man. Here's another question that's just come to me as I'm doing research - is it literally just an arpeggiator? From my research, arpeggiators are used to (duh) create arpeggios... can i just program in whatever I like or am I limited to arpeggios? It's probably a really stupid question, and if it was called 'sequencer' I wouldn't be thrown so much by it. It does look very cool though, i just don't have much call for arpeggios in the kind of music I make. But a sequencer, that I can use.
 
Yep you can make your own sequence from scratch, think of it as a sequencer which transposes your sequence depending on what key you press or latch.

It's a beast of a single-instrument sequencer, drawing in velocity and after-touch curves is such a nice way to edit something like this.

Will certainly be getting the iMS-20 later today, I have the DS-10 and love it, would be nice to upgrade.

WRT to thumbjam, I have it but really didn't dig it on the iPhone when I tried it. Something about that vertical orientation of the notes that make it hard for me to make a decent tune. A keyboard would have been a lot easier. A sequencer would have been even better. Although I guess if it has that midi support it could run through StepPolyArp?
 
By the way, it's easy to get lost with all these fine Apps coming out. I'm a Logic Pro user, but what is the best overall sequencer right now for iPhone? So for me that would mean, arranging, working with drums and synths, and having a couple FX like reverb and filters as well.

I'd say nanostudio. I use beatmaker but mostly because I create downtempo and hiphop music. Nanostudio seems right up your alley though.
