Iron Brigade drops GfWL, add Steam Matchmaking, on sale for

Double Fine said:
San Francisco - May 26, 2015 - Double Fine Productions, developer and publisher of the successfully-crowdfunded games Broken Age and Massive Chalice, is adding another game to its list of self-published titles. Iron Brigade on PC will now be published under the Double Fine label. The developer has also regained ownership of the intellectual property.

Double Fine is releasing an update to the Steam version of the game. In addition to bug fixes and improvements, the original matchmaking system has been removed and replaced with matchmaking via Steam.

“The great thing about this change is that now there are no obstacles to us creating the best possible experience for players,” said the game’s creator, Brad Muir. “We have fixed all known issues as well as provided a great matchmaking experience for multiplayer. Vlad and his Monovision Menace are on the move again! In the best possible way!”

Originally released in 2011, Iron Brigade was popular among players for its unique combination of tower defense and mech shooter gameplay. IGN called Iron Brigade, “the best downloadable game [they’ve] played all year.” Going on to say “Its skillful blend of witty writing, fun shooting, and tactical tower defense makes for hours of replayable gameplay.”

The update was released today for PC via Steam. To celebrate, the game is currently available for 80% off.

There are currently no plans to rename the game, “Trenched.

The press release says Mac and Linux also, but that was a mistake apparently. It's still only for Windows.

Ah, great. This game is one of my favorite DF games, but it's so much more fun in multiplayer. GfWL was always kind of shitty, so I'm happy it'll be easier to play through this again with some friends now.

This is the one game I was really wanting to get rid of GFWL. Too bad they couldn't somehow convert the earned achievements over to the Steam version, similar to what Dark Souls did. But I guess it gives me more to do when replaying it.

I've waited many years for this to happen, I've even started boycotting DF games for a while because of how poorly this game was handled.

What makes this game better in multiplayer? Genuine question. Is there cool synergy or stuff to be had in multiplayer, or is it just more fun because of the increased headcount? I played the demo yonks ago and found it fun, but mostly bland.

I remember when this was called Trenched. Why was the name changed?

Trenched was a board game trademark in Portugal or something... the owner brought it up and MS (trademark/IP owners before Double Fine got it back) just renamed it I think, not 100% sure what happened but sounded like they just couldn't be bothered to deal with the legal issues and just renamed it

Tower Defence is just automatically better in co-op. Or rather it's worse alone since it was multiplayer to begin with.

So...it's better because of the increased headcount. I'd be more likely to get it for multiplayer knowing that it had unique multiplayer mechanics or something.

gfwl was a real pain in this ass for me in this game specifically

might consider going back to it now, i liked what i played.

I had always hoped for more DLC. I was hesitant to get it at first, but I sure played at lot of it with friends. I't's great to strategize with friends and experiment with different builds.

Most things are better co-op in general, but it's funner to have a team of diverse mechs with different strengths and weaknesses.

Iron Brigade is a terrific Double Fine game. Even in a field crowded with tower defense games it managed to do some really fun and interesting stuff with a good sense of humor.

Also piloting your "Mobile Trench" felt really, really satisfying.

I hope they expand on the IP.

I already have this on the 360 but at it's current sale price it's worth getting it on PC too.

I hope now Double Fine own the IP they can look at creating a sequel.

Also what are the chances this now comes out on PS4 and Xbox One?

I've never had the chance to play it multiplayer, but I feel like a lot more builds would become viable in multiplayer because you can afford to specialise against smaller sets of enemies.

Nice to see Double Fine getting their games back and becoming more independent. Hopefully they find success. Also GFWL patch is great. Didnt realize this till i watched the GB unfinished fridays this week.

Played it through in several sittings over the last few days and this game is pretty great. There are still some matchmaking bugs which makes getting some of the co-op achiements a pain. But at this price, it is absolutely worth it.

Specializing in multiplayer is key especially in survival.
