There's no way a machine that's been between 400 and 600 dollars is going to sell at the rate of the Wii. No way in hell

Fortunately for Sony, their other divisions are doing well right now so as long as they're fine with supporting a money-eating gaming division they'll be able to stay in the business.
MGS is a level below GTA, Halo, Mario and FF saleswise, but God of War is a level below MGS.

that is an impossible scenario for the following reason; even if the worst case happened and PS3 turned into a Dreamcast or even worse, that will imply on PS3 and not the PS family as a whole or its future. sure, success and failure have their effects on future planning, but Sony as an entity and force can take a Dreamcast hit and keep going. even if they laid off a bit, they will come back. it's what they do. Sony is a high-tech consumer company. this is their business.mr stroke said:Could a bad 08 turn the Playstation name into the next Dreamcast?

This is what I mean. Sony coming in 99th place wouldn't matter because just like Nintendo, the brand is very strong and there is a lot of money that can be made off it. One canyon in the road doesn't mean you can't grapple to the other side eventually.
Nintendo was crying in the N64+GC era. And now they're kicking ass like nobodies business. Change is a part of nature, it is wired in our core and our societies reflect that. Especially in this business? You can lose overnight.
I don't agree. it is a valid question and can be a good discussion. the problem is, too many kids and morons around can ruin any thread. now it would be great if those could be shot dead instead.Borys said:Threads like this make me think of the PS3 as a GameCube successor.

LBP will get 8.5 at highest because it will be innovative but shallow
MGS4 will get high 8s because people are loyal to the series even though the gameplay has not changed much in 9 years.
Killzone will fail just like KZ1 because its made by crappy devs, 1up even played it and said it played like the first, which is not good.
Resistance will get good score really high 8s close to nine but not quite

I think they had their make or break year last year. The software "maked" a lot of money, the hardware just "breaked".fanduck said:Has anybody asked if this is a make or break year for Microsoft yet? Personally, I don't think MS did as well last year as they should have, and I think if Sony does "make" it this year, MS could be right bad to where they were with the original xbox.
The first year is always the "make or break" year for a console. I can't think of any example where a console sold either really well or really poorly the first year, then suddenly had its fortunes reversed the next. The best example I can think of is the DS, but that was because of software that opened it up to a whole new market, which leads me to point 2:Ashhong said:Nobodys calling 2007 a scratch. None of these games will do anything more than a temporary bump in sales. That's just how sequels work. It's the same reason a new Mario or Zelda doesn't push Nintendo's hardware anymore. It's the games that come out of nowhere that are the real system sellers. Stuff like GTAIII, Halo, Brain Age, Wii Sports. Fresh software that draws new audiences in, that's what pushes hardware. Unless it's a sequel that completely redefines a franchise (FFVII, GTAIII), and even then, it doesn't always help (OoT, RE4). Also, you don't get to say KZ2 is a system seller before it's out, especially after you should have learned your lesson with the first game.KingJ2002 said:Yes... but sony has a killer lineup this year

if these games dont do it... might as well ride this wave out.

false... I called this shit from the beginning and everyone thought I was crazy not here on gaf but on other forums.Dunlop said:Sorry I meant it should be in the Wii's position , nobody expected the Wii to do this well....
In reality the PS3 should have sold like gangbusters initially to the early adopters, they had nothing to justify the sick price. They did just about everything they could have possibly done wrong. They are making amends now, but a third place finish is almost certain.
2008 will certainly sell more PS3's with the nice lineup that is coming and we all benefit as the 2 "bottom feeders" will throw everything they have at us to carve out a little more market share. The Wii is in a category all by itself.
Competition is good :lol
Yes but Sony needs to work damn hard this year in order to make a mark... i will say that it wont get terribly bad because of the Blu-ray player. That thing is the systems saving grace if things go downhill. The system wont go to Dreamcast or gamecube levels because of it. No matter what anyone says Blu-ray combined with the PS3 was a key component to the PS3 and to the Blu-ray format itself.CrushDance said:/Thread.
Even the Wii and 360 need to keep games and services coming in order to continue with sales and increase market share. Every year is a trial for every system.
Its all "mind share" and Sony doesn't have it right now.Liara T'Soni said:*American perspective, can't speak on anywhere else*
To quote something I actually read here before, I believe that Sony's biggest problem right now seems to be the stench of failure surrounding it....Wii is THAT SYSTEM to have right now, the 360 has found a solid, loyal bigger then niche market in young to middle ages males...and Sony is just that oddball out.
I just personally find it very hard to imagine that people are going to be buying PS3's next year, and just being excited about them, the same way that people were with the Wii or even 360 this year....it just doesn't have "it" right now.
Jirotrom said:Its all "mind share" and Sony doesn't have it right now.
I find it weird that people think LBP will be a system seller. MGS4 is a possibility because its been hyped more than the previous entries and many people see it as Sony's hope. Imo FF XIII is the game the PS3 needed or even a remake of VII. That teaser vid of VII at E3 way back had people so excited and hype and I know quite a few people including myself that would have dropped 600 if not more day one if that game was a launch game.Liara T'Soni said:I don't see how they're gonna get it either.
Honestly, I think that some people are overrating the power of MGS.....I do not believe that that fanbase is as prominent as it was in the past. I may be proven wrong, whatever, but Sony fans are acting like this and (LOL) Little Big Planet are gonna be some shut down the industry type shit, and I personally just don't see it happening. I'd actually expect GT5 to be bigger then both of these. If I was Sony though, I'd place as much emphasis on KZ2 as possible, KZ1 be damned, they NEED this to be the "Halo killer" that fans think it will be.
Not that old next-gen shit all three consoles are the same gen and it's current anyway. Why not refer to it as being the more viable HD plattform?theBishop said:They are the only next-gen game in town. I would believe Japanese don't care about next-gen except that Dynasty Warriors was able to push PS3 above the Wii in November. This bodes well for better games like MGS4, GT5 (teh realz), FF13, WKS, etc.
It's hyperbole, but most big games for 360 see a release for PC as well. Either being multi-plat from the beginning (CoD etc.) or getting ported later on (GoW, VP). If you have a gaming PC and a PS3 you don't really need a 360 to play most games (sans Nintendo of course).krypt0nian said:You aren't really stupid enough to believe this are you?

Really? I'll be getting a PS3, but for the games. There are better solutions for a media center than either PS3 or 360.tino said:BTW I don't agree the notion that Sony Playstation need to beat Nintendo. Sony is competing with MS in a race to win the digital living room. People who own Wii or DS will still need a media center, and its going to be either the Sony solution or the MS solution. You don't need a PS3 for the Sony solution, you just need to use Sony gear to wire the house with their (uPnP etc) standards.
Wii is in another race altogether.jett said:If they don't make it, it will be a two-console race come 2009.

A Triple A title has got nothing to do with reviews... LAIR is a Triple A title that bombed in reviews.Phife Dawg said:Well what else would AAA be? Otherwise it could just be AA or A, no?
There are a couple of ways the phrase "AAA game" could be interpreted, and a high quality (ie high reviewed) game would be one of them. Another is what you're getting at, where "AAA game" means something that had a lot of money, time, and energy sunk into it. Still another would be "AAA game" meaning a game that sells very well.Metalmurphy said:A Triple A title has got nothing to do with reviews... LAIR is a Triple A title that bombed in reviews.
