Is anyone else nostalgic for mobile games yet?

I'm strictly talking smartphone games here. Both Android and iOS' app stores launched in 2008. That's 7 years of mobile gaming (and I know that phones have had games long before then, but I think we can safely say that this is when mobile gaming really became a thing).

I believe I first got an iPod Touch in 2010 (and my first Android smartphone a year later). That's 5 years ago, and certainly enough time has passed for me to feel nostalgic for some of the games I played on that thing. A lot of free demos and fart apps, but also some fun games. Luckily iTunes and Google Play let you go back and see every app you ever downloaded. At least, they say they do but I swear iTunes is leaving some apps out of the list. It's not even listing them in the order I downloaded them in even though I have it set to order them by most recent. What's up with that?

Anyway, there's this one physics puzzle game I remember called Cover Orange that I was really into. Basically you have to drag whatever objects you have available around so that when the raincloud of death comes around it won't hit any of the oranges (that makes sense, right?). There was like a million levels too so it lasted me a long time. I just found out that there's a sequel and its available on Android so I'm gonna give that a try.

I'm also kinda nostalgic for the early Zenonia games, that generic Korean RPG series that apparently is still alive. I never got very far into those games. I always played them for just a couple hours before getting bored and quitting, and then coming back a few months later to see if my mind had changed (it never did). I'm not nostalgic enough to actually go back to them again, but I thought that out of all the cruddy mobile RPGs I played that this series deserved a mention.

Remember the Tap Tap Revenge games? They were basically Guitar Hero without the plastic guitars. Those games were super popular back when I was in high school, but now they've completely disappeared from all app stores. I can't say I'm surprised. Guitar Hero is getting a revival, so maybe Tap Tap Resurgence will be coming soon? Yeah, I doubt it. But seriously, being able to use your iTunes purchases in a Guitar Hero-like rhythm game is a great idea. Activision should hook up a deal with Apple and get on that.

Another game I was really addicted to was called Dungeon Raid. You had to trace a path through the puzzle board to match up tiles to defeat the enemies that appeared on the board. For every turn that an enemy was still on the board they would attack you, and if your health hit zero then it was game over. It was a really fun and unique puzzle game, but sadly it hasn't been updated in years and the Android version doesn't work on newer versions of Android. Why hasn't someone stolen this amazing idea yet? Put microtransactions in it, I don't care!

It's kinda sad because mobile games aren't preserved anywhere near as well as console or PC games are. There's no physical copies of any of them in existence and many games never get updated with support for the latest devices. If a game is removed from the app store and you didn't previously buy it you'd have no way of playing it without buying a device on ebay that has it (iPhone with Flappy Bird for $1000, anyone?) or resorting to piracy, but even then most mobile games don't ever get ripped or cracked. If someone wants to go back and play a mobile game from their childhood (and yes, eventually that will become a thing), they're gonna have a real hard time doing so. It's really too bad.

So, is anyone else nostalgic for any old smartphone games? I can't be the only one!

booooo

there are a few games i played on my 3gs that i sometimes feel nostalgic for. there was a tony hawk game i kinda enjoyed despite never having played the console games or really caring for skateboarding in general. there was a rts or something called robopacalypse (?) that was both a DS game and on iOS. i got it when was free for a day on iOS and i loved it. they teased a sequel and i think the studio shut down before that ever happened. there's also that cube runner game, but there's like 9000x ports of that on like every modern system ever.

but then i switched to android and i don't think i've played a real game on my phone or my tablet outside of very occasional hearthstone in the past year or so. before that i played mobile games occasionally--14px and temple run come to mind.

I felt that way recently for a game called Diversion. A running platformer with PSX type graphics. I looked on store and it was still there. Im kind of surprised because i assumed no one played it.

Smartphone? No there clone each other enough that even the original IPs feel like sequels.

Old dumb phones though?

This was the shiiiiiiiit

I fired up Cube Runner a month ago. I hadn't played that game since the App Store first launched and it was one of the only games on there. I must admit, it made me a bit nostalgic.

This shit was badass back then

N-gage thread?

Great memories from Elders Scrolls Shadowkey, co-op at that time was something never seen in the series and I don't think they've done that again to this date?
It was really fun back then.

For me, it's way too early. But in another five to ten years there will certainly be some I'm nostalgic for.

It's funny you mention Dungeon Raid because I still play that one on a weekly basis. Never gets old.

Tap Tap Revenge is probably the only one that comes to mind.
Didn't like 4 though.

oh man i remember that. that was the fucking shit.

i think the app store circa 3gs was the best in terms of mobile gaming. nowadays its just iAPs and knockoffs of other games, and the Play Store is just as bad.

I got a little nostalgia for this shitty Worms clone called Moles that you had a rocket and a shotgun and thats all you had. It was on my Motorola flip phone.

I don't think any other kind of mobile game really deserves "nostalgia" as they're all still pretty much in circulation. I'm not worried about OG cut the rope really.

You are GAF's first "Only One".

not all of them. the robopacalypse game i mentioned above was pulled from the app store after the studio got closed and never got updated to support iOS 4 and above.

Yes. Specifically Gameloft games. Their quality a couple years ago were great with N.O.V.A 3, Dungeon Hunter 2, and Asphalt 8 (pre-energy system). Now their output are clear cash grabs, ugh. I also miss Chair's Infinity Blade series. RIP IB:Dungeons.

Damn, I forgot about Zenonia. Damn shame.

Looks like about a two thirds of people in here didn't even read the OP's first sentence.

Knee jerk hatred toward the word mobile is at an all time high.

Ghost Trick since it was apparently delisted and it won't let me download it again. I never finished it ;_;
Same here. There was a really cool game published by Nicalis that is gone from my downloads (that I paid for too) and now I'll never know what it was!

Huh, I remember seeing that game in my list of app downloads on iTunes but I remember nothing about it. Neat art style though. Apparently it still gets updates too (at least, it does on Android)!

Oh man, I totally remember that game. And looking at some of the iTunes customer reviews...

In tears finally found this game
by Hufflepuff_xoxo

I used to play this game on my cousins iPhone but then she cracked the screen and got the newest version of the iPhone and I was like 5-6 at the time and it was like my favorite game and I got a phone finally at 9 but it was like a sucky phone so I got another phone when I was 10 and I searched for this game but I forgot the name and so I finally got a ipod the newest version and I finally found the game some happy when I played it all the memories came back. So I am Friken happy and grateful to have found this game the people who made this game thanks-P.S I just gave a long review so yeah.....proves I love this game:)

Still one of the best games on iOS.

Still feels exactly the same on my brand spanking new 5S as it did on my 4 and on my original iPod Touch. For a game to remain as addictive and playable today as it did the first time I picked it up is an impressive feat.

Technology may vastly improve over 7 generations of devices, but that doesn't mean the experiences newer hardware can bring will be any better than what the older hardware brought.

AMAZING! My childhood right here
by Zachlop1

This game was straight up my childhood. Me and my friend would play this for hours and hours trying to beat each other. Ill never forget the day i got 3,200 on the original cube runner. And when this game came out we were so hyped. Amazing game. 10/10. I remember sitting on my ipod 2 with my friend and those were the days. I made this same review on cube runner 2 but im just trying to help out XD

See! It's not too early! The age of mobile nostalgia is upon us!

I got a 1st gen iPod Touch and I remember trying out all the "hottest" games as they came out. Tap Tap, Gameloft, Drop7, etc. I mostly thought they were really lame back then and my opinion hasn't changed much. Same for flip phone games, which mostly had terrible graphics even for the time and bad, bad controls.

Yes, in 10 years for Horizon Chase!

I've heard it's quite good. Really need to download it.

The only mobile game that I have any amount of nostalgia for is the original Disney Presents Critter Crunch. Played it on an old Verizon flip phone. I'm sure there might be a few smart phone games down the road. King of Thieves, maybe Pako.

Are you thinking of NightSky? Yeah, looks like it was removed from the app store, but it's still on Steam.

maybe, just maybe maybe people don't like the stuff you like. but yeah, the hate is at an all time high. groan.

1. I don't believe you
2. Why did you get a 1st gen iPod Touch if you didn't want to play the games on the App Store?
3. See 1.

Nah man, Gameloft and Tap Tap I can understand but Drop7 was really fun. Haven't played it since Zynga bought it though.

I am, actually. My phone is too full of music now, only games left on there are Galaga Tekken, Rayman Fiesta Run, and Flappy Bird; I don't play any of them anymore, just a game of Solitaire once every blue moon. I kinda miss the early days of Angry Birds (and Rio!), Candy Crush before Zynga became supervillain shitty, and those old OMG Pop games that were better as desktop browser games.

Snake still the GOAT
