Is Assassin's Creed Unity worth playing?

Awful game that killed the series for me (I also skipped 3 and Revelations). Terrible forced combat, bad performance on consoles, insanely cumbersome controls, overly convoluted storyline. The main assassinations were kind of fun but there aren't many of them. And you have to wade through far more locked-room melee fights to get to them.

Wait for the hopefully far better sequel (that I couldn't give two shits about - thanks, Unity!).

I think it's worth playing. It was one of the first games I bought for my Xbone when I got it in May and I really enjoyed it. I'm pretty quick to forgive performance issues when the developer is repentent, and since the game runs decently for me most of the time I'm not holding a grudge against Ubisoft.

I recommend it, honestly just the city for me made it worth it but then they added much better mission design, better controls(once you get used to them compared to previous entries), better AI(yes cheesing with smoke bombs still work), and a relatively decent twist on the typical AC story where you're basically the 1% instead of part of the people rising up, (despite the advertising that said otherwise). Honestly tho Syndicate comes out in a few months and that game seems to be building upon the foundations on Unity with better performance as well.

Given the incredible diversity in replies (game sucks, game is mediocre, game is decent, game is awesome, game is better than black flag, worse than AC3, etc...) I have no choice but to give the game a chance.

I usually dont like to play more than 3 games at once, so once I finish off Shadow Of Mordor I can juggle Last Of Us, MCC, and Unity. Even if I end up hating Unity I'll have Last Of Us and MCC to fall back on.

Edit: FYI I already have the game disc in my possession btw. I bought it as a gift for my brother and he hated it and gave it to me, heh. So whether I choose to play the game or not I won't be spending anything extra).

it's one of those games where i feel something is missing, while i can't really explain it.
(huge fan of the ezio trilogy)

Beautiful Graphics, back to the crowded city, great atmosphere created ---- but it didn't make click

Seeing the replies makes me worry about picking it up. I think I'd only be interested in the historical depiction of Paris and being able to explore that world. I wouldn't really care about the story or game performance that much. Has anyone approached it from that perspective and thought it was a worthwhile experience?

Traversal around Paris is basically the highlight of the game

It's stunningly great looking. The problem is it's still junky assassins creed gameplay and world traversal. How after so many years it's not fluid is beyond me.

I liked Unity. I played it at launch on PS4 (and then ended up getting it free with XO). It ran ok then but was fine (now worse than lots of PS3 games the first few years)
.

The only thing I didn't like was the locking of some of the collectibles behind mobile apps and the overly complicated currency thing going on. SOme or all of that may have been patched out. I wouldn't rate it as highly as Black Flag though Unity has one major trump card of BF in that it doesn't make you do those 50 000 eavesdropping missions.

So yeah, Unity is way better than AC3 but just south of ACIV: BF which in turn is lesser than the first two Ezio games.

Its the same shit. I got it for 20 bucks, and its the same treadmill of bullshit on the map. Climb tower, collect bullshit. Repeat. The assassinations are back though, so thats a plus. I remember caring so much for this franchise, but its stale at this point.

The attention to detail is pretty ridiculous. It's still the most convincing city that i've ever seen in a game, mainly due to interiors being so accessible as well as ridiculous good npc AI like couples associating with each other.

I mainline a just the story missions and didn't
Do anything else and found it fun in a lot of parts and frustrating in some. Just focusing on the story didn't take to long either and I still had pretty much all the best gear. If you can find it dirt cheap and you at least enjoy assassins creed games then it will be a decent enough experience. Nothing mind blowing.

Yeah, the controls are clunky and really make the game not fun at all. It's a stunningly realized city but running around it is incredibly tedious.

Yeah, on PC its good enough to play for visuals. Great architecture and interiors. I won't be uninstalling it as I like to boot it up and take a look around sometimes, climb some churches and take out some foes.

Just a tip to anyone, when you chase someone, to jump forward and grab just needs a few rapid taps of the button. I see so many getting infuriated as they press the button once or try twice slowly or hold down the button with all their strength as the screen only says hit the button. People claim its broken and runaround for 20 mins not getting it but I can run and grab 100% at will anytime, only needs 3-4 button presses in succession.

Anyway, call me a sucker for punishment but I'm looking forward to Syndicate, looks even better. On PC though we have to wait a wee bit for it to release..

I'd say yes. It is!
Not sure how it is after the patch the improved the frame-rate but f** the NPCs pop-in/spawn though...

But its a very good AC game (one of my favorites) with a really fun co-op mode, that sadly won't be at their next game. Also the mission structure where you will never get unsynchronized in eavesdropping missions, is a huge step forward!

And I'm not even that fan of the series anymore, and certainly won't buy the new one.

Montressor, I don't know why you liked Revelations, and at this point, I'm too afraid to ask.

All I'll say is that what little time I spent with Unity was enjoyable despite the poor performance. I am burned out on Assassin's Creed on the whole, whoever.

No. Unity just reemphasized that the series needs multiple environments/locations in order to be fun. Paris is gorgeous and detailed as fuck but I felt trapped the entire time. Country areas a la AC2 would have done wonders. Side missions are bloated as all hell and I never gave a damn about the story, including the much lauded Arno/Elise relationship. Much of the interesting history bits are relegated to the co-op missions. Cover system while a nice idea in concept is incredibly flawed in execution.

Rogue somehow managed to be the best 2014 AC game, despite major reuse of assets and likely less than half of Unity's budget.

They really could've just ripped the super smooth cover system right out of Watch Dogs and NO ONE would've complained.

I love AC, LOVE IT. Played them all unless they were handheld only.

It sucked, it really did. I think it's worth checking out if you can get it for $10, but don't expect much.

Oh, I would have been fine with that. WD controlled like a dream.

Quite baffling that a company with multiple games with great cover systems (WD, Splinter Cell, Ghost Recon) couldn't manage to get it right in their biggest franchise.

I enjoyed the main story well enough and would play it for that - but the present day storyline is just plain insulting to the player.

I loved Unity. Probably my 3rd favorite game from the series with AC2 and Brotherhood being above it.

I definitely recommend trying it out.

I hated that there was all this pre-release buzz about how combat is a fail state. And then the game goes ahead and throws multiple non-optional melee fights at you, where you can't leave the room until each enemy is defeated.

The story was forgettable except for the end, the city was a step up over everything except rome in brotherhood, fist fighting was removed, the parkour is the best its ever been. Give it a shot. Its not bad.

If it was for the PC version I would say give it a chance, but on consoles it's one of the worst games I have played. Just absolutely no fun and it's so ridiculous that you can run through an indoor space which a mission forces you to be in and assassinate all the enemies while there are people walking around seeing all of it take place, but for it to have no consequences and for them to act like you're not even there. Most immersion breaking moment in the whole dang game for me and it happens multiple times.

AC3 was my first and only one. I bought AC2 but haven't had time yet.

I enjoyed AC3, nothing special but I thought it was solid.

At least they're now adopting the TLOU/Arkham style cover system over a hard cover system.

I wish more games would explain when there is a lack of animation priority when it come to parrying. They also should've explained that if an enemy has a glowing health bar than holding the attack button=kill. The game seriously could've used a scene(multiple scenes with transitions) where Arno is training to become an assassin instead of skipping ahead a full year and giving you a bunch of abilities. I can't recall many forced fights tho, at least not with the 4-5 rank enemies.

I liked it. If you don't have completionist issues I wouldn't reccomend going after all the filler collectibles. It can be an unfun time hog.

No, its a waste of space and a waste of time. It's another smashing hit in the ubisoft's do not play collection. Unity seems like an assembly line game. Very boring, repetitive, and dry. A game that just includes things just to tick a check box.

I enjoyed my time with it.

Though the story is terrible and Arno is the worst assassin in the series.

I'd say get it if you can find it under $15.
I disagree I liked Arno thought he was quite a good character and enjoyed the overall story arc. It was well acted and characters were interesting. I was glad to be rid of most of the future stuff.

I think it gets too much hate and many don't like it because of the bad performance at launch. I played it a couple of months ago and had minimal issues after patches. The combat is kind of bad but all the games have that. France was a great setting.

The coins you pay real money for are not at all necessary and were a very bad decision to include. As was the companion app stuff which has now been patched out. EA needs to stop this shit as well with their stupid packs in their full price games. These things and the crummy launch performance created a shitstorm at launch which obscured the fact that the game is fun.

Playing through it right now. I am 80% done with main storyline. Quiet frankly the game is just not good. It looks amazing, the city is well done but the gameplay is boring. Very repetitive.

People complained about the parry system of previous ACs because it made the game too easy and the dev solution was just to remove it. Now the combat system is just time block and smash the attack button. Some bugs are still there but they do not prevent you from enjoying what little there is to enjoy.

All the sidequests are meaningless and dont add anything to the already bland gameplay and story. They went overboard with the number of chests and some require lockpick ability that you are supposed to unlock. Opening those chest just give you random amount of money that you probably dont need. So its all pointless and its obvious not much tought went into it.

The coop missions can be fun when they work. I ended up starting some over 4 to 5 times just because of some random bugs: Npc you're supposed to escort stop moving or not loading at all, inability to attack ennemies. I really believe that the coop missions were not tested. This mode has the most critical and gamebreaking bugs.

The story so far does not have any climax, nothing to make you care. I wanted to like Arno, he reminds me a lot of Ezio but the writters just did not make you care enough. In fact, the entire game feels like they were trying to replicate AC2 but failed miserably.

Now stealth... I was excited that Unity was supposed to finally bring some good stealth to the franchise. Unfornately its barely works. The weak ai ruins it. The snap to wall does not work most of the time. Enemies see you even when not facing you or behind walls. They straight up copied Arkham detective mode for some uninteresting sidequest.

To sum up
Pros:
Good graphics
Paris looks good
Arno's final outfit is probably my favorite AC oufit

Cons:
Everything else

I say it's worth playing, but go in with tempered expectations.

I played on PS4 and the performance issues weren't horrid (jumped in after a few patches), I was aware of its shortcomings throughout the game. Loved the visuals, though.

Story was alright.

I'm a massive AC fan but for the love of God don't waste your time. I've tried several times to stick with the game but it just does so many things badly. The story is boring as hell. The combat is dreadful and it's still glitchy on consoles.

It's not worth the effort. I'm sincerely hope Syndicate makes AC fun again. Black Flag was amazing.

Honestly, I think Unity is perfectly skippable.

I don't think Unity is even a bad game, I enjoyed my time with it, but for all the claims Ubi made about this being a big change for the series, it's the most run of the mill entry since Revelations imo.

It adds almost nothing to the overarching series mythos and Arno's story isn't interesting in the slightest. I did enjoy the relationship between Arno and Elise, I thought that was really well done. It looks good though, and some of the freefrom assassination and multiplayer missions can be fun.

It's the only ac I thought was worth beating but I'm in the minority here.

I still think it has the best graphics of any next gen game.

I hated my brief time in Unity. Only got through maybe 25% of the game and I love the AC series. Worst AC by far -- yes, even worse than AC1

Seriously it's terrible

I'm actually semi-playing it now, got it recently for $10 on ps4 although I beat the main story at launch. Going through and doing some of the murder mystery stuff that I missed.

I'd say pass, its really not a good game or assassins creed story, especially with Syndicate right around the corner. Maybe for $5-10 you could give it a try and stop playing if you get bored. Paris itself is pretty cool and some of the side missions are fun, but I get really frustrated at a lot of the parkour stuff and how fast my guy dies when things go tits up.

The map is completely ludicrous, this is what it looks like when you open up the map screen. How the hell does the game director not open this the first time and immediately say STOP WE NEED TO REDO THIS

I've beat all the AC games, save for III, and I can say that Unity is by far the worst. I found beating it a chore and I only did so because it was the only way I was going to justify spending as much as I did.

Even if you had the game for free, I would still say Unity isn't worth playing. Playing the game still cost time, and that time can be spent playing a much more worthy title.

In my opinion, if you put Revelations on the same level as AC:2 you should be plenty satisfied with unity...i think revelations is the worst of the games I have played (having skipped on AC1 and 3)

Black Flag is definitely my favorite after 2, but I really enjoyed the murder mystery quests in Unity (may be my favorite mission type of all the AC games), however a lot of the other sidestuff just isn't that fun to do over and over again.

If I had to rank them, I would probably say:
AC 2 5/5
Black Flag 4/5
Brotherhood 4/5
Unity 3/5
Revelations 2/5

Ehhhhh. Unity is the first game in the series that I haven't finished. I've played and liked all of the games except Revelations (never bought it) and I even enjoyed 3.

Unity is nothing special and for sure skippable. Biggest atrocity is that they took one of the most interesting settings possible and did absolutely nothing with it
