Is Attack on Titan a good introduction to manga?

Shin Angyo Onshi motherfuckers, haven't met many people who've read it, it's great. It's pretty much Korean Berserk (but better), everybody go read it, especially if you like Seinen.

And this also, one of my all time favorites.

Why the hell would you tell people to start with Berserk, an unfinished manga that will probably never end?

Nonsense. Why is anyone reading A Song of Ice and Fire then? The journey is more than worth it. Also, people need to stop saying it'll never get finished. Miura still has a good 20 years to finish it off.

Side note: The first few volumes of Berserk are not as bad as everyone says they are.

The art in Attack on Titan is incredible. It's captures the sense of dread, perspective, expressions and action masterfully.

Surely sarcasm? If not, read more manga.

The only good thing in attack of titan is the incredibely well animated action sequence in the anime version.... aside from that, it take itself so seriously that it's more comical than anything

i don't know where you can start but there's a lot of really good thing out there (yeah not really helpful i know, but just don't start with attack on titan)

People seriously saying the anime of AoT is great? Shit has piss poor pacing, scenes/eps are dragged out longer than it needs to be. As for manga wise specifically for Shonen manga, I would recommend Rurouni Kenshin and Flame of Recca for good introduction the manga, find both series far better than AoT which just drags at times.

I thought the concept was interesting so I read it.
It's terrible when it starts to ramble over the same points again and again without moving anything forward.
Would make a great movie though if they gutted everything except the general idea.

I will say the comic was better than the cartoon though, which was such trash that it almost becomes enjoyable.

Not necessarily.
Manga like any form of media has different genres, from light hearted slice of life, to the happy go lucky shonen adventures, and so on and so forth.

The art is awful, especially on the start. Also, it's too confusing. There are many better mangas to introduce you to, well, mangas.

Never could get into manga, the art and such always turned me off. The only works that caught my attention before were Junji Ito's The Enigma of Amigara Fault and Gyo.

Attack on Titan looks really cool going by that upcoming game, and the digital volumes on Comixology are relatively cheap. Worth picking up? Is it something' I'd like if I enjoyed Ito's stuff?

It's very good, so yeah, it can be used as "intro" to manga. A bit better than the anime in parts.
Though if you are normally turned off by the art... the art is pretty raw, rough in the edges, and even more in the first volumes. People read it because the suspense, the action, the mystery, etc, not because the art.

But I'm not sure of recommending it for your first manga, as the story isn't finished right now, and it's kind of long. Usually for starting I prefer to recommend something shorter and finished.

Seems weird to me that someone could actively dislike all manga. There are so many different types of stories and art styles. Look for something you're interested in, not just what's popular.

Nope. It fits the story well. It's truly great. And I don't be told to read more manga brah, nobody on GAF can top my collection. #onelove

pick a manga with art and/or subject matter that interests you, it's the matter of taste of what manga is suitable to you as "good intro"

The plot's pace is just the worst. First 5 chapters are awesome and then it just drags on and on....and on...............and on.......................and on.

Get to your basement already!

I don't really think Manga is hard to get into. Look up aggregate sites, type in a few tags to get a setting that interests you and you'll find plenty series that could be interesting.

It's when you've read your first few series that you'll start to get annoyed at tropes ect.

Pro tip: series that go on forewer usually turn bad. You may get nostalgia for some but ultimately they work like a telenovela and go nowhere.

From a casual standpoint, Attack on Titan is a perfect introduction to anime, and it has worked wonderfully for me in order to introduce my girlfriend into it, after several botched attempts of trying to make her interested in the genre trough more prestigious animes such as Perfect Blue or Howl's Moving Castle.

If we're talking about the manga, it is true that Attack on Titan is not that good of an introduction. Confusing narrative + ugly-ass drawings is a massive turnoff for many. In my case, "I am a hero" was an outstanding tool for getting people drawn into it, as it takes a familiar genre (zombi apocalypse) and then it gives it a wholly Japanese twist to it (and paired with a damn good drawing style, no less).

Congrats on having crappy taste?

Why is everyone recommending Berserk....do you want the OP to suffer like us? Berserk is an infinitely better manga but the wait is too much.

In my case berserk was the perfect starter manga, because when I tired of its breadth I read a little dbz to keep me at it, and when I finished I wanted more so badly I jumped into buying something else to fill that void...!

Unfortunately, that something else was AoT. Talk about going from le carre to a robert Ludlum novel :/

Got some good recs from this thread though! Will definitely check out vagabond, and vinland saga.

Your AoT example is not too bad, the early chapters were truly bad

I tried to make it as fair as possible by showing each manga at around the same volume. But yeah, the first few volumes of Attack on Titan are extremely ugly.

Good man!

I don't know anything about AOT but I've come here to shamelessly plug Jojo's Bizarre adventure. Please read JJBA OP, it will change your life as it has done mine and many others. Let Araki-sama bless you with his bizareness and make an adventurer out of you.

And now I'll take my leave.

AoT may not be a good "starter" manga, but It's still good.

My take on it is that the art style is supposed to be dark and gritty to add to the horror elements.

A good, well drawn manga is Death Note.

There's a 1000 different art styles out there so don't let one kill the whole medium!

Threads like this always make me want to read Berserk, but I can never get over how expensive comics and manga are. At the prices I see on Amazon, it would take me about $400 to read all of Berserk, and I just can't hack it. The only manga I own is the two-volume hardcover Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, because it's really cheap for a 2000 page hardcover. But I just can't convince myself to invest in these massive series of $15 softcovers.

It is a lot of money. I spent about $560 Australian dollars on all 37 volumes and have a $400 dollar Guts statue on pre-order, so that alone should tell you how much I've fallen in love with Berserk. For me it's honestly been worth the money. It's fantastic, like one of the best things I've ever come across in my life fantastic. The manga is truly a masterpiece.

You should just dive in head first and read Gantz.

It's super wacky.

You are a cruel man.

You should specify where he should start, since early JoJo is ruff as all hell.

Berserk and Vagabond. That's all you'll need for the time being.

Some people like Monster, but the way it deals with exposition really puts me off. It's so obvious and forced.

Lone Wolf & Cub if you like a more grounded, believable style in your mangas. The stories are great too.
Stuff from the father of Manga is great if you can tolerate a very stylized art (but still detailed and well made) art style: Ozamu Tezukas Ayako, Swallowing the Earth, Buddha, Black Jack, Apollo's Song to list a few.
Miyazaki's masterpiece Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind is highly recommended, amazingly detailed and natural line work and a great story to go with it.
Akira by Katsuhiro Otomo has incredibly detailed line work and a decent story.
