Is Clementine from The Walking Dead black?

For the record, here's Glenn as portrayed by Telltale's artists:

And here's Clementine:

She is listed as African-American on the Wiki I got that from, but that's a Wiki so salt is required: http://walkingdead.wikia.com/wiki/Clementine

yeah, and here's my kid:

She's also african-american. Mixed, but not that far off from my mom (who isn't) at her age.

But did you realize he was also the Hulu guy?

You sure your not confusing him with the all state guy?
Morgan Freeman

I can see why some would think she's asian, the artstyle and muted colors of the game makes her look really light and it doesn't help that her eyes are ridiculously asian-like compared to Lee or anyone else.

As unusual as it is (for me anyways) I have seem some light skinned black people that have very asian qualities. Somewhat related, my sister was born from 2 puerto ricans and she is light skinned but has very white characteristics that my mother or her father have (thin nose, straight light hair, tiny ears, almond eyes, small lips) conversely her daughter is extremely white, looks exactly like her yet has something she don't
the ass was phat
. Her father is puerto rican (dark skinned) and my mother is light skinned.

I came out looking much more latino in features but with really light skin, I could pass for white despite not having a trace of western blood in me.

But... how? Was it the general lack of reference to his race throughout the whole game?

I'm not sure honestly. I mean I knew he was black but it never sunk in. I must have treated it like Mass Effect where Shepard became more of an extension of myself. It also never really came up I never answered any question with the mindset of what would a black guy do it was always what would I do. It probably would have been relevant if Lee had experienced some racism in the story, which I'm glad he didn't.

But did you realize he was also the Hulu guy?

No, but I did realize he was Jed Masterson from Fallout New Vegas.

Clearly not. Just to be clear, I'd like to confirm that you believe

A) There are no Asians in Atlanta

and

B) Asians don't give their children names that are popular in the local region to help them blend in

Is this correct?

How you got that is beyond me. Of course there are in Atlanta, but TWD doesn't take place in Atlanta it takes place in small rural town of Macon. I doubt nearly as many Asians would be there. That stated, the fact people confuse her for Lee's daughter only furthers the idea of Clementine being Asian is ridiculous because no one is going to think a little asian girl is Lee's daughter since you know...he's black. You know who they would think is his daughter? A little black girl. Shock and awe!

Asians do give their children names that are popular to blend in true but they're not giving their kids a name like Clementine, especially if they're first generation parents. Asian family will pick the most common American names, and I can assure you Clementine is not one of them.

Cindy
Kelly
Lisa
Tina
Jenny
May

Anecdotal evidence, but those are the name of a few of my friends out in Duluth GA (Korea 2).

Clementine is clearly black, just look at her, and if there are any doubts the picture should settle them. That's all that should be needed.

Why? Show me a movie or game or whatever with a really dark skinned child being portrayed as endearing. There's a sentiment that dark skinned purple are unpalatable after a point.
Little Rascals, Cosby Show, Family Matters, Bernie Mac and Role Models.

I initially saw her as white, but the features cause a little confusion.

Are they cannibals?
But yes, where are the dark characters?

She wasnt black or asian.

She was cute. :D

You goddamn racist!

Yeah, picture of the folks assuming they're her parents (haven't gotten that far in the game) is cut and dry.

Rudy huxtable, man. You can also look at Gary Coleman in diff'rent strokes, and Emmanuel Lewis in "webster."

And this was in the 1980s- the country is a LOT more liberal about that sort of thing now.

I was actually posting in support of the idea that she's black rather than asian, since her portrayal doesn't resemble that of another character who is inarguably asian. My caveat about not trusting the Wiki was just covering my arse against the obvious "that's a Wiki so it has no authority" comments.

Cute kid!

I had to convince myself she was white since I found it difficult to connect with a black child

I've been stuck on this post for several minutes now and still don't know how to respond. The best I can is that she is a child and one if the key themes of the first season was to protect her, regardless of race and/or ethnicity.

I'm surprised the first page didn't stop with that shit tbqh.

She's adorable. misbehaves all the time though, just like dad.

Maybe I generalised too much. What I'm trying to say is that her skin tone toes the line of not being too black and I feel her being light bordering on ambiguous was a concious decision.

Really though, no one would find a black as fuck kid cute and her being cute is a big part of why its so easy to care for the character. Light skinned little black girl with natural hair is almost a trope at this point.

Needs a little more oomph for it to be a bannable post.

How did people miss the picture? Why would someone jump straight into thinking that she was adopted? Did the dad being in the picture throw them off? She can't be in a happy home?

The picture is in plain sight. lol.
Then you see them again dead as fuck.
lol.

Isn't Clementine a pure and innocent child in a fallen world? That could be why people are having problems seeing her as black...

Mine is gonna be a thug by the time this season is over with.

I never thought about it.

I don't think I ever pay attention to race when playing a video game, honestly.

The only time I might notice it is due to some silly/horrible stereotyped character.

I guess it's nice that you didn't see him as a "black guy" but instead as yourself. We need more people to feel like that with non-white characters in media.

He did experience one moment, but it was a self aware joke. It was when Kenny, the hick country guy, assumes that Lee might know how to pick a lock because he's "urban", and Lee gives him a "Are you shitting me?" look in response, to which Kenny is embarrassed.

No, from the original post.
