Is Dante the best new franchise character this generation?

Master Chief's personality is the one you give him. Someone smart will make him similar to Ender, someone dumb will compare him to Bruce Willis.

Spot on, I wish Bungie had shown his origins a little more in the two games on the XBox but I'm hopeful for some flashback missions in Halo 3 or at least a basic origin tale in the movie.

For Popularity - Master Chief (I always thought he looked like a generic FPS space marine too)

For Quality and Greatness - King of All Cosmos (not hero, but greatest villain/mentor ever if not only villain/mentor ever)

I would give it to Dante or Sam Fisher, I cant decicde who is better though, both of them are so amazing

As for unplayable characters, it is without a doubt The Boss from MGS3. Anyone who has played the game would not disagree with me, she was truly incredible.

Master Chief or Ryu Hayabusa

Awesome screen presence

What made Chief such a badass is the way he's portrayed in the game. When the marines invest so much of their faith in you, you cant help but feel like your a hero.

When Chief arrives, its like a celebration, and watching Halo2 trailers itt confirms his badass status. Its done before, but Bungie managed to pull it off brilliantly.

I know for a fact people are go crazy when we see him for the first time rendered on X360. You know he's going to kick everyones ass

To all saying Master Chief: :lol What the fuck? The thread is called best new franchise character. MC is a bland, generic, sci-fi grunt. There is nothing memorable about him, aside from the fact he wears a ridiculous suit.

Dante might have made my top 10....maybe my top 5....if I were just taking the first game into account. But his character was so mishandled in 2 and even to some extent 3 (not that 3 isn't a good game but the characterization of Dante just didn't impress me very much). So, as a FRANCHISE character I'm gonna have to say no.

hmmm, it seems like we've been going down in memorability from gen to gen. ps2/xbx/gcn/dc had less memorable new characters than psone/n64/saturn, which had less than snes/genesis, which had less than nes(mario/zelda/solidsnake/samus/etc) era.

1. Arthas - you cannot stop this gravy train
2. Illidan - he got owned and now has legions of pissed off fans
3. Dante - good comeback from DMC2
4. [Insert GTA thug] This is probably number 2 or 3 but since the person changes all the time it loses some spots
5. Master Chief - your game sucks and shields are garbage you wouldnt last 4 secs in a CS fight but your game is what it is, a franchise /respect.
6. Sam Fischer SC has made its mark period I would put him higher than MC but i dont think SC is more popular than Halo overall.

HO (honorable mention) - Link wtf homie i should be playing my new zelda RIGHT NOW...that and you debuted..when i was like 8..

Up and Coming - Sol Badguy, God of War ...guy Kranos is it, i expect big things from him on PS3.

He's the main character in the best action series around. So unless Capcom really messes up DMC, and i'm talking worse than DMC2, then I doubt he's going anywhere.

Maybe due to Capcom's refusal to let anything die properly, but certainly not due to mainstream popularity. The majority of gamers don't even know who he is in the US, and most likely never will considering how high the difficulty and learning curves are on the DMC series. I like that the DMC series is around for those of us who enjoy it, but to call Dante the best new franchise character for this gen is just ridiculous. He has no mindshare to speak of outside of the hardcore niche and he's a horribly generic character overall. Gee, an overconfident badass with family issues and a big sword. And people call Master Chief bland and boring?

Speaking of which:

Fucking perfect. Halo's story and characters are very much about what the player brings to them. There's a complex and interesting universe behind all of Bungie's games, but it's never just served up on a platter for you. That's why it's so compelling, and probably why the series' storyline gets so much hate around here.

Well some people here obviously can't under what "best new franchise character" means.

Someone who the entire game series is focused on, lone hero, has cameos in other games due to his popularity, memorable, and NEW CHARACTER for this gen.

So yeah I'd say Dante wins hands down. Master Chief is the only other name mentioned that fits the description but I wouldn't say he's very memorable due just to his character personality.

I'm pretty sure this thread isn't about "who's the main character in the most popular current gen franchise", if it were you'd have a point. And no Dante isn't the most original character ever, but as far as characters go this gen, he's definetly at the top of the list.

BEST NEW FRANCHISE character for the action genre?

Dante for sure. But any other question is too broad? For hard/mid-core gamers? For casuals etc. etc. etc.

First off, DMC in itself resulted in Ninja Gaiden and God of War. Fuck please, crater face Itagaki isn't going to admit shit but when the game has moves, designs, menus, bosses ripped out of DMC1 that fuckin tells you something.

As for God of War, well, I think David Jaffe even said a marvelous quote one day on his blog:

"If it wasn't for Devil May Cry, God of War would be nowhere near as good as I feel it is."

"Go make dante a sandwich bitch. Give one to Shinji Mikami too."

EDIT: And if you want to know about character popularity in DMC's genre, well--given the series' sales it would seem Dante is more recognized than Kratos and Ryu H from NG(xbox), ESPECIALLY WORLDWIDE SALES.
