Is Doom Eternal's DLC a bust?

Doom Eternal is one of my Games of the Year of 2020 and I've not touched the Ancient Gods DLC at all yet (in fact on PC with the Bethesda Launcher its a pain to even find unless you're in game) and I have not seen any hype, any Streamer playing it or anything, is it really bad?

Compared to the games original release where it seems to be extremely successful and got a lot of coverage, the DLC has kinda sneaked in and out of even being talked about

It's not bad, if you can handle the difficulty, to me it was basically just a cheap addition, which I rage quitted and did not come back.

I had a lot of fun with it. It just felt like... half of what I should have been playing. Maybe people will be buzzing when part 2 comes out, but idk. Having "part 1" listed on the first DLC with no release date on the second part may have been that bundles downfall.

Base game is my GOTY. Like everyone else already said will be waiting till it's all out to play hopefully it's not too expensive . Also expecting a next gen edition with all dlc

It's a solid expansion IMO. Cranks everything up to 11 and doesn't hold back. Everyone talked about it and played it the first week or so. I really enjoyed it, can't wait for the next!

I loved the main game but kind of burned out on it after playing through each difficulty. No interest in DLC at this point, I'm trying to play all the dark souls games now.

The DLC is awesome! It makes the main game seem like practice mode. I beat it on UN as well as the main game and I'm not the best FPS player so it's just a matter of practice and strategy. Saving your super ammo and quick swapping weapons is key. I would say the Super Gore Nest Master level is harder than any of the DLC levels.

No date yet, they say "at a later date" on a recent blog. I'm also holding off because it will be better on my PS5 than my GTX 1080 I think.

I was replying to say it was December but I reread it and I just made that up, wishful thinking.
Does the console version have mouse support? Playing these games with the pad just sucks.

The DLC for Doom Eternal is just more Doom Eternal but cranked up to 10 as far as chaos/difficulty. If you are someone who scraped through the main campaign you will have a real hard time, some areas are really long with wave after wave of heavies. Its a lot harder in general.

I loved Doom Eternal so giving me more Doom Eternal was a good thing!

Eternal is top 5 2021, I just don't do DLC. I very, very rarely want to come back to a game 8 months later to play ~5 hours of new content, especially when it's considered much harder and I'm completely out of practice.

The DLC is better than the main game in every single possible aspect. Its a giant Fuck you to the whole playerbase, the encounters are some of the craziest I've seen in the genre and in general, the Swamp level is an all time great. Jump in and have a blast op, go straight in nightmare. Its the most relentless piece of content ever released these last years

I rarely play big expansions, because by the time they get released I move on to other games and also forget the game's mechanics. With Eternal's DLC being tougher than the base game it can be issue to return after many months of not playing the game.

If it's as tough as they say, I have no interest. The base game wasn't exactly a walk in the park either. I'm sure I can manage eventually, but there's no reason to battle with frustration.

It's really good for me. The base game was basically practice mode for the DLC and the Super Gore Nest ML just released.
I really like that they keep building on what the base game gave us, giving more challenges to apply what we learned playing the main story. First they taught us how to fish and now we have to fish.

Thank fuck im not the only one who finds this hard. I made the mistake of not playing in months. Bought the dlc and its ridiculously hard. I've had to try multiple times and feel i've hardly scratched the surface. Part of me thought im just out of practice but i felt i was getting back to my best. But its absolutely kicking my ass. And im only playing on ultra violence. Nightmare must be rage inducing!

Nightmare run took me some time. UV once I got my bearings back wasnt impossible but the slayer gate wrecked my shit for a few hours.

Exactly this.

Thats exactly it. Games have so much content in them nowadays anyway i almost wish games like this would just take the best parts of the dlc and spread them throughout the next game once I've had time to unburnout. I LOVED ghosts of Tsushima, but by the end I was good. I got what I wanted out of the gameplay and the story was done. I wouldn't have bought some 20 dollar expansion despite thinking the game is a 9/10.

Eternal was just about the perfect difficulty for me. Difficult but after one or two attempts you could get past just about anything the game threw at you. Hearing that they ramped up the difficulty considerably for the DLC totally turned me off.

Some people like that but its not for me. Like the Sekiro topic on the front page where the guy spent 4 hours and 130 attemps to beat the last boss....nah fuck all that, I have better things to do.

The thing about Doom is that it isn't just running around shooting. There is a system and they want you to learn it. Once you do not only is the game very manageable it's also much more enjoyable.

Friend get both parts right now, the Ancient Gods DLC is well worth playing new mechanics, areas enemies and bosses, more than DLC i would call it part 2 of the campaign, because thats basically what it is, the continuation of the story and mechanics. the main campaign would feel incomplete without the DLC.

Feel like the game itself is kinda a bust in comparison to the 1st.
No way dude its a big jump in every way i love Eternal
Eternal>>>2016 (and 2016 was amazing)

Varied mechanics, setting, improved graphics, the amount of new mechanics, animations and enemies alone is impressive as hell. Like WOW 😲

One area that was much improved were the kill animations, im finding ones i didn't know they existed after 2 replays

I just finished DLC 2 and was hoping there was a thread I could ramble about so I'll go ahead and take this opportunity.

As a complete package I still vastly prefer Doom 2016. The game felt "consistent" and did exactly what it set out to do. Doom Eternal "Tries a lot of new things" which should be commended when they could have easily have just lather rinse repeated the formula until it died, but doesn't really work for me.

In the base game of Eternal you have things like the Marauders that are just a nuisance more than anything, with strange design decisions like "You have to be close but not too close but don't get too far either but also wait for the right moment" which just...isn't "fun" to me? Then the Icon of Sin last boss fight was hands down the worst thing in all of the games and their DLCs. When you sit there chipping away at one part it's fine and then it starts ALL OVER AGAIN for a second round, and I was just....bored at that point. Doom (to me) doesn't really work with long drawn out boss fights. Unlike DMC or something where the boss fights have hugely specific telegraphs and rely on mastering of mobility and moves to get the most damage in the least amount of time, DOOM's bosses always feel like a chore to me.

Then Eternal goes out of its way constantly to try and nerf you because they can't really think of anything better to vary up the gameplay. "Use this gun, oops you stepped in the purple goo, wait for this guy to light up green," etc are all things that I don't really "Enjoy" but learned to deal with.

Ancient Gods 1 is probably the best of the DLCs. Lots of ball bustingly difficult arenas, tons of cool shit even if not all of it landed. They continue the "lets put doom slayer in a small arena, lets put him in poison, lets put him goo, which is "Fine" but the fights were fun enough that I didn't really mind it and I actually didn't hate the last boss fight here.

Ancient Gods 2 I don't even know what I got out of it. I beat it in a single sitting, the ending is so abrupt it's like they just ran out of money, and the entire game (including DLCs) feels like if they were going to focus so much on "story" they needed better writers for those moments to really "land." Most of the good lore and info is in Codex Entries, like the son's heart being used for the Icon of Sin and other stuff that comes into play in part 2, and there's "reveals" that are meant to be these big moments but hit with all the impact of a wet sock.

I think Doom 2016 knew exactly how to ride the line. It gave you story of what was going on through Vega and Hayden and then moved on so you could get back to killing. While Doom Eternal has a lot of cool "idea" a majority of them are kinda messy and just...illegible at times. Then DLC 2 had ANOTHER final boss that overstays its welcome and THEN has the audacity to just end the entire story in like 3 minutes. The ideas are "fine" but their execution is all a mess.

Ancient Gods 2 was a huge disappointment to me personally. IT wasn't as difficult as part 1, the story was kinda nonsense, it felt way too short, they had an infinity war rip off moment that has no payoffs because we literally don't care about ANYONE else in the universe, and then they're quick to rush to credits. That's ignoring the fact that they basically just made the last boss a bigger less interesting marauder fight and just spawn in adds because they don't know what else to do with it while they give you a hammer that feels really bad to wield.

I dunno, I like Doom Eternal a lot and if you take out some of the stupider gameplay decisions I think it's a rad as fuck game, but I still find myself longing for Doom 2016 where the story was to the point and I didn't have to watch them try to make Doomguy a Gears of War caveman monster who looks like he got hit too hard on his head as a baby and it pushed his eyes too far apart as if I'm supposed to "care" about these random NPCs.

Small correction there. It's only the most recent entry that decided that running around shooting wasn't enough.

So glad they added all that platforming and mandatory weapon switching. Saved the series, it did.

Yessir.

Doom eternal is a bust. Hearing the dlc it's even more mayhem and mechanics? Nope, not for me

More is not always better.
More mechanics is too confusing and makes gameplay too methodical.
And glory kill animations are way too much. There is not 3 seconds you don't glory finish an enemy

I found the difficulty so out of control it prevented me from enjoying the game. It's massively more difficult than the base game. I just want to run around as a God fucking the shit out of demons, but even on the lowest difficulty the final boss was nuts.

I hope id will revitalize SnapMap for Eternal as a complete package with assets from Doom2016 and allowing people to make more traditional style levels with corridors, monster closets and vast open spaces.

this and chainsawing chainsawing chainsawing.....

I've just bought the year 1 pass on sale (btw the Bethesda launcher is godamn awful for purchasing dlc, I wish I bought it on Steam, but that's what you get buying from a key reseller)

After I'm done with KH3, I'm jumping back in on Ultra Nightmare

For me personally it was the most fun I had this year. So much in fact I'm planing on replaying whole game with both DLCs again.

The first DLC, actually, is better than the base game.
The balance is far more interesting and alot of the ecounters are sublimely designed.
More: in my opinion Blood Swamps is among the best 10 FPS levels of all time.

Not sure about Part 2, since I didn't play it yet.
