Is DOOM the most technically impressive game out today?

It's definitely up there. It runs really well too, which was a pleasant surprise.

This is sort of random but as I just finished it - I'd argue Blops 3 has the best facial tech of all time. On mobile so no pics, but good lord the animation and quality is just astounding.

The fact that the game manages to look that pretty on consoles while maintaining 60fps is impressive alone.

I think DOOM is a technical showpiece and managed to go above and beyond on what Rage tried to do.

Rip and Tear tho, yeah

Definitely. There's a few upcoming games that might give it a run for its money, but as of right now it's a massive accomplishment.

No. Uncharted 4 occassionally tricked me into thinking I was watching live action footage. DOOM is great, but not something that immediately stands out technically.

Da fuck are you guys talking about yo???

It... doesn't even come close to running at a smooth 60fps on consoles.

edit: Not on X1 at least

Eh, sound design is pretty shit in the game

Guns don't sound that meaty and explosions sound like weak farts

Compare it to something like Battlefield and you'll hear the difference

Hm. If anything, I think they are too meaty and distorted. Everything in that game is cranked so damn hard. A pass from DICE would've helped on sound, sure --- it would've been nice. But it still would've been a challenge to mix. You got super meaty demon noises, super meaty music, super meaty weapons... all that compression, plus the intense low end and high end oversaturation, something's gonna get lost in the chaos.

At least on PS4 I'm not impressed. It feels fluid for sure (although I don't get much out of 60 fps TBH) and there are nice effects during combat, but it looks very bland outside of it. Especially the environments are low detail. Everything just looks muddy and out-of-date. I doubt they added more on other platforms (well maybe higher res textures for all objects? no idea)

Easily the most impressive 60fps title out there.

The post processing is also better than most 30fps games too. The motion blur and DoF is fantastic.

There's no piece of Blops 3's tech that out does AW.

Doom's camera angle and setting are never going to trick you into thinking you're watching live action footage.

UFC 3 can trick me into thinking I'm watching live action footage. NBA 2K can do that. That doesn't mean I think they have better graphics than something else.
Until Battlefield 1 comes out, probably yeah.

I'll be shocked if it runs as smoothly as Doom does. Like 50% of why it's incredible is just how well it runs on lower end hardware and higher end hardware

I think Doom is a mixed bag, graphically. At times, I think it's absolutely amazing. Other times, it's just ok. But as an overall package, I do think it's pretty nice overall.

No. A 60 fps console game can't be technically impressive since it has to give up a lot of modern tech to reach that performance goal.

Doom looks really nice but it's not that crazy looking.
It's just really well done. Not an inflection point.

Based on this thread, I know what I'm spending my Amazon gift card on.
You actually JUST missed the prime day deal for it.

Also, I love the game which is really surprising because it looked like crap in all aspects up until launch.

Can't wait to see Wolfenstein on this engine.

I think so, even on High settings the demo was pretty much one of the best looking (and running) games I've ever seen, incredible work done on the engine from the travesty that was IdTech 5. The particle effects, lighting and image quality over-all is top notch.
Could do with some more sparks though, need smoke and sparks flying everywhere like in the original FEAR.

Plus it's just so damn fun to play. I was skeptical the glory kill system would slow the gameplay combat down but the actual animations are so brutal, fast and enjoyable that it actually compliments and reinforces the core gameplay mechanics.

GoTY so far for me.

Would totally pay for new finishing animations...
