Is Game Freak wasted just doing Pokemon?

You know what.
I'm jealous of GameFreak's position, being able to continue to expand on the franchise.
I wish I could do that.

Sure, it would be nice if they would spread their wings more. But still not a lot of devs these days can say they are working on quality titles for 15 years in a row.

In actuality they've been working on a Pokemon MMO since 2001 or something because they realized it's potential way back then already

They just wanna make sure it's awesome when it releases

I hear Activision is still hiring

For Tajiri, Pokemon was a labor of love, being worked on/seeking a publisher for so long while other projects were being published.

Maybe they could take a break since each game could last a lifetime, but if he likes making Pokemon, I don't see why he can't keep making them.

You'd think with how successful they are, they would be able to grow as a company and have multiple projects going on. Have them keep going with pokemon and give them the opportunity to do something fresh.

I know most normal folks dont buy games based on developers names, but I feel like the name gamefreak could sell games buy itself to the public.

Obviously Satoshi Tajiri loves making Pokemon games or else he would have left the Game Freak a long time ago.

You're assuming they want to. If they still enjoy making the games and drowning in fat sacks of cash, more power to them.

What's Tajiri's involvement these days? I know he's a bit of a recluse, but there's hardly anything on him since the earlier days.

On another note, was Mario & Wario really only released in Japan? I read about this game in Australian magazines 15+ years ago but i was never made to believe it was Japan only!

I was kinda interested to see if it shared some staff/ideas with Mario vs DK series, but knowing that it was Gamefreak now, i'm guessing that isn't the case.

I'm almost certain he doesn't even work at GameFreak anymore. He was very sick a few years ago, and left around the time D/P came out in Japan. He might still have some influence on the games, but he certainly doesn't work on them day to day. I can't say this with certainty, because there is literally nothing about him on the internet.

Absolutely. There are more than enough examples of Pokemon out there and they have proven they have quality original ideas.

Black & White are excellent Pokemon games, and you can tell that GameFreak flexed their creative muscles during it's development.

After such a mega hit, and unless they really want to jump to another Pokemon game next, I'd love to see a new concept from them in the RPG or platformer genre. Something outside of the Pokemon World to perhaps get them familiar with 3DS tech and also throw ideas around before the next huge Pokemon adventure.

I didn't buy Drill Dozer until about 2 years after it released, but it's one of my favorite games on the GBA. The drill mechanics lend a really fun spin on platforming, and the rumble gimmick made it that much more enjoyable. From it's clever designs, catchy music, and colorful pixel art, it's classic GameFreak.

So sad, such a good game. On board for a sequel anytime Game Freak!

Pulseman and Drill Dozer bored me to tears. Nice looking and playing games, but they're the Pokemon Company.

I'm not convinced that a developer can be called "skilled" when they're only known for one thing, and they make only minor tweaks here and there with each new release.

I'm not calling the quality of Pokemon into question, as I've been a fan right from the start, but it takes more than one series which has changed very little over the years for me to hold a developer in high reverence.
Say what you will, but the fact is, they're the only developers that I stuck with consistently for the whole franchise. They're the only developers that didn't somehow mess up somewhere with me. Nintendo certainly did, plenty of times, and Nintendo are relatively conservative too.

I'd hold such a developer in higher regard than I would a developer which loses me somewhere along the way, even if only for one game.

I'd love to see them remake Red/Blue with all the 5th gen mechanics on a console.

I'd prefer (after RSE remakes) that they start re-visiting locations instead of remaking. A journey into Kanto many years later.

This makes sense. They can't remake a game they already remade, can they?

If it introduces new ecosystems and such, yeah, but if it's a story-specific change, then I'd rather just a remake.

That's fine too as long as they put it on a console. I don't need an MMO, even though that would be fun, but I do want a console version of the game. I'd actually prefer something where they have more than one region, maybe even three. Two regions is why 2nd gen was my favorite gen.

I want what GSC did to Kanto (other than making it smaller) but on a much larger scale.

I actually wanna see Game Freak get a try at their own RPG that isn't Pokemon. I just want to see what can they do story wise and if they can add new elements to turn-based battles. Maybe something where they can experiment for new ideas that they can later incorporate into the main Pokemon games.

I think it's pretty evident that they enjoy money.

Who doesn't?
Well, yeah, that too.

But they do have quite a level of creative freedom with the game, possibly since they own as much of it as Nintendo does. It's quite universal in that it encompasses many different styles of gameplay and is usually very experimental in areas.

It also gives Game Freak a chance to continue injecting 80s/90s-style "future technology" into everything they do, which they've enjoyed doing for decades.

You know I'd rather if they do make a game not an RPG (/puzzle), that it'd still be Pokemon.

Because heck we all know the Pokemon world is big and deep enough to support it (perhaps even more than Mario). And it serves to make the world even bigger and deeper. Not to mention the game would be better than if they invented a new IP for it.

I also still think the Pokemon world has enough potential for several more iterations of the mainline games. I'm still coming up daily with new things that would make the games better (I might still have my old list somewhere..).

GameFreak should focus on making good pokemon games imo. It is kinda hard to make the game interesting for long time fans and still as appealing to younger crowds. The new pokemon often miss the charm of the old ones (although i did like some of the new pokemons throughout rs, dp and bw) and the game got complicated and catching all pokemon is now pretty much impossible without a huge dedication (i collected 150 pokemon for the original rb pretty easily. now it is hard as hell to even catch half of em)

They really need some new way to stop the "adding 100 pokemon and updating the graphics and UI a bit" Formula

Yes! Game Freak is wasted. Drill Dozer was amazing, but I think they could do so much more too. They have a lot of genius, but I'm bored with playing Pokemon over and over again.

I'd like to see them do a Pokemon game that focuses on a new story and area, and maybe less on capturing. Maybe even give you certain Pokemon that you have to use, but more customization over their moves and stuff.

they could do side projects as drill dozer

they made drill dozer while making fire red leaf green emerald and probably diamond and pearl right ?

Ugh, not this...the franchise hasn't used the "gotta catch em all tagline" in YEARS. It's obvious the focus is on battling now so saying they should stop adding more, just because you're still caught up with trying to get them all, doesn't make sense
