Is having a Crafting system a requirement for games nowadays?

I don't have a problem if it's part of the gameplay. A survival or hunting game for example.

My issue is when it basically becomes a collect-a-thon. Randomly collect shit that you combine to just get more shit.

I have never played a game where I've been excited about collecting a bunch of shit to make an awesome weapon or armor. It's tedious. It's far more exciting to me to be rewarded with some amazing piece of gear for completing a difficult task, or for exploring an area and stumbling upon it. Honestly, I'm not sure who these people are that prefer the former.

It's right up there with XP as one of the most overused game mechanics out there, with most games that use it not actually needing it for any reason other than to pander to the YouTube generation.

I think it makes sense in certain games, especially if it fits thematically (which I actually think it does in Breath of the Wild), but it reaches a point where grinding for materials just becomes boring....*boots up Monster Hunter Generations*

It seems that way. I hate the trend, to be honest. It's always boring, never satisfying, and most of the time busy-work. It's a carrot at the end of a stick.

There's only been a few games that made crafting actually interesting and fun. Most of the time, it's a drag.

Crafting is the worst. Every game that came out after Minecraft had an unnecessary, terrible crafting system. Why the hell does Alien Isolation have a crafting system!? It's a waste of time. I'd rather do something fun and interesting to get good gear than look for shit.

I love skill trees. Don't like crafting because you can never get items good enough to justify all the effort. And it's also grindy by nature.
