Is it generally safe to keep consoles vertical?

Tales from peoples ass.

It mostly comes down to disc scratching since people enjoy moving their console while it spins a disc for some reason.
My first 360 would scratch any disc whenever it was sitting vertical, without me moving it, touching it, or looking at it weird.

Never had any issue with any of my PS2s, PS3s, Wii, Wii U.

Coolant pooling on PS3? Wow! :D

Does he realise that consoles don't use the same technology for cooling as, say, a fridge?

BRB, just defrosting my consoles.

I only have place for vertical consoles, PS3 Slim never had any issues. Works like a charm.

PS4 will be used in same configuration.

I really hated physics but what is this "fight against gravity" thing? Isn't gravity still acting on the motor even when it's horizontal?

There were a few rumours going around stating that the PS3 was more susceptible to overheating/YLOD in the vertical position.

The only reasons I preferred keeping my PS2 horizontal and not vertical were that I didn't have a vertical stand and thus the console was more prone to falling with the controllers tethered to it...(and now because I have a HDD inside of it and I feel like it wasn't meant to be in vertical position that way).

But now with wireless controllers ? Vertical all the way. Saves space, looks cool and neat next to the TV.

Edit : Oh and another thing I liked for the PS2 being horizontal : its flatness. I could but another console on top of it. My teenager self was so happy to save space by putting my GC on top of it.

My 360 Slim did not like being stood vertically, and made a hell of a racket to complain, despite being new at the time. It's horizontal now and much happier.

If anything I prefer horizontal simply because it's less likely anyone's going to knock something expensive over.

A friend of mine used his launch 360 always horizontal until I lend it last year. I used the console vertical and it RRODed.

It's fine.
But do not move a spinning 360, it'll eat your disk.

Since the PS2 days, all my consoles were placed vertically. Never had a problem.

Although, with my 360 you had to be extremely careful otherwise it would destroy the discs. Complete failure in engineering there.

After my original 60GB PS3 YLOD, I was told by Sony tech support to keep it vertical for better air circulation. It's been over 3 years, never had problems since.

Same for all my consoles except the 360.

I keep all my consoles vertical... looks good and I've never had a problem with disc scratching or them falling off the table.

PS2 vertical is a bad idea, just look at the where the fan is positioned. If it is vertical heat will rise up and get stuck and if you have a HDD in it the PS2 will be even warmer in vertical mode.

If the PS2 is in horizontal mode airflow is increased and PS2 will run cooler (and last longer).

I think Microsoft has specifically said that XBO is not designed to sit vertically, so probably don't do it to that system.

For some reason the "redesigned" Wii without GC compat says in the manual you're not supposed to stand it vertically, even though the exterior looks exactly the same as the original Wii, including the rubber stoppers on the right side/bottom.

Based on my experience with Wario Ware Twisted, you can move the GameCube into pretty much every direction while playing.

If the console has a hard disk built in, it's best to chose one orientation and stick with it. Especially fast hard disks supposedly don't like it when the orientation is changed after a while.
