Is it normal to avoid the ends of a bread loaf?

Avoiding the ends of a bread loaf isn't just abnormal, it's perverse. Everyone knows the crust is the best part.

I like them but I normally save them until the end. I have no idea if it's true or not but my brain thinks keeping the end pieces will help prevent the rest of the loaf from going stale and hard as quickly. Like the outer crust is more resistant to air or something :lol

End slices on mass market, pre-packaged bread (especially white bread) are pure garbage.

End slices on home made bread loaves are heavenly. Hot, crusty... I should really make some bread.

Tell your friend to buy a better brand of bread.

It has nothing to do with brand. It's how his parents did it and it's pretty much the same as me. I've been doing that for as long as I remember and I'm not even sure why. It's automatic at this point.

What this guy said. But fuck that I'll eat the end of any loaf of bread first. When I open any bag I reach my hand all the way in to the other side to grab the other end cause I need that shit NAO. Fuckin gaf, first sitting while peeing, now this.

I keep them in the freezer until I have a bunch, then bake them until rock hard and make my own bread crumbs. Don't prefer to eat them *store bought mind you, when I bake my own they get eaten while still warm*

On Wonderbread I can see avoiding them as it's limp-wristed crust anyway and half the time the end slices are thinner than a slice anyway. Combine that with Wonder bread having the density of toilet paper and you have a recipe for disaster.

With homemade bread, however, the end pieces are the best part. I always steal the first slice for myself after taking a loaf out of the bread maker because it's all deliciously crunchy.

Nobody eats end pieces, that's what birds are for.

Of some shit super market packaged bread, I get it, but on any bakery or Italian or French bread I'd slap the shit out of you if you didn't inhale the ends.

I don't mind them but I only use them for sandwiches. I never eat the 2 pieces together though, I just pair them off with a middle slice. They make pretty good struggle hotdog buns though.

I eat the ends of the bread too. It's perfect to dip into some tomato soup.

(Don't throw good food away while other creatures on this planet starve to death! :o )

We make our own bread, and goddam the ends (crusts) are the best bit. Fresh out of the oven, still warm, a bit of butter, so damn good.

I always wonder what kind of bread people are talking about when this topic comes up. My sandwich bread is really cheap, and in addition to being mostly crust the end pieces are only half as thick as a regular slice. That means that they get used for toast if they're left and I want toast, otherwise they get tossed.

Now, when I buy a decent loaf of bread that costs more like $4-$5, every last bit of that gets eaten because it's delicious. Basically, the crust of nice bread has an awesome crunchy flavor, but the crust of American sandwich bread is just dry.

Bread is bread, you people are crazy to avoid it just because it's a different colour and a tiny bit tougher? Do you only ever eat the softest bread in the world? If someone bought you a loaf of rye would you just throw the whole thing out since the inside of it will be just as tough as a normal crust? Do you peel buns like an apple? It's madness!

If I'm making toast I might skip the first two pieces since the crust slice might be really thin and not serve toast well. I keep the 2nd one so when I end up making a sandwich for it there is another piece of bread that's shape is a perfect match to the crust piece

I actually save them for last. Toasted up, they seem to hold more butter due to not being as porous as regular slices.

Same goes for French loaves, love the ends.

I don't just skip the first 'end' I go straight to the middle, by time I reach either end it's gone off and fed to the ducks.

I don't get the toasting the ends thing. Do you not toast regular pieces too? Why differentiate?

I eat the ends last because I find the crust tends to be slightly more resistant to becoming stale than the actual bread itself. Thus leaving the ends in the bread in the bag, I find tends to keep the rest in better condition.

Plus, doing a PB&J or some other creamy sandwich kind of thing works best with the ends.

I don't toss away good food. They are in the bag, they get eaten like the rest of the slices, even if they are a bit deformed I don't discriminate.

I was always taught that the end slice dries out ever so slightly, so leave the crust there til you're done with the loaf to mitigate that deterioration.

My mother loves bread-ends. I would say that she were lying to save them for herself but I've actually noticed that the slices closer to the opening are less soft when I don't save the end slice for last, so I guess she wasn't full of crap.

Sliced bread has nasty crust anyway.

you know why there is bread ends right? Its so you don't have to tighten the end of the bag and still have fresh bread, the only slice that goes bad is the end.

It is but you're a selfish, wasteful fuck if you do.

Seriously tho, its normal but I usually eat the ends anyways. It doesn't boyher me.
