Is It Worth Playing Metroid Prime 2 At This Point?

Echoes is awesome and the music rocks (especially the Torvus Bog variants). Do yourself a favor and do the "fetch quest" as you uncover it -- don't wait until the end of the game. It's much less "fetchy" that way.

You can't though. They all need the Dark Visor and a good portion require the Light Suit.

I actually didn't mind the fetch quest too much, since IIRC, your map does a decent job showing you where they are or something. At least I remember there being less guesswork and vague descriptions. It was a good way to pick up things you missed without being too aimless.

The bossfight against the robot thing is one of the best designed boss battle of all time. So amazing.

Echoes is my favourite in the trilogy, but I didn't realise it until I'd played through prime and Echoes both multiple times.

Start on hard mode from the beginning, it's a lot more enjoyable that way.

Fine work Retro. That game was really special, thank you!

Quadraxis. I have an awesome wallpaper of that fight somewhere!

I did it all wrong and played MP3 on the Wii and I loved that game. Now before I start MP2 I need to play MP1. I have been willing to play both but time and backlog is not on my side. I think I will move their priority and start soon.

Uh what? Prime 2 has a really simplified layout and very obvious objectives, even with the dual world aspect. It's a central hub with the different areas orbiting around it. It's not nearly as interwoven as Prime 1.

The general structure of the world is simple but individual areas like Torvus and Sanctuary Fortress (Agon not so much) are extremely complex and difficult to navigate imo.

It definitely taxes your brain more than the original Prime and feels almost like a sequel made for exclusively for Prime vets.

Yeah, I'd be really surprised if "Metroid Prime for people who thought Metroid Prime was too easy" wasn't used to describe Echoes sometime during the development process. That's exactly what it is. Echoes is probably one of the most exclusionary games I've played in terms of target audience. It's just a meaner, tougher Prime for people who loved that game, and nothing more. Though I think that's all it needs to be.

This says hi

Its why my Wii will never leave my cold dead hands.

Good point. I know that the second time I played it though, I was able to find them more leisurely, even if it was toward the end. The first time I had to get them all at once, I think I didn't realize what I was looking for. Anyway, it didn't mar the game for me.

I never finished echoes because I had just marathoned through the first game.
What i played was fantastic though.

I would honestly suggest playing the gamecube version.
Clicking the Triggers to lock your view or lock on just feels so RIGHT. And I never liked how switching visors worked on the Wii, because after I was done switching visors I was just looking all over, as my reticle was on the edge of the screen. It just felt clunkier than it needed to be, and definitely clunkier than pushing a direction on the dpad, or on the stick.

That aside, if you feel like suffering through the visor/beam switching controls then the Wii version is still a great game. Just play Echoes.

I will not entertain people complaining about BACKTRACKING in a METROID game ;)

It's just as good if not better but it starts off very hard. It's pretty painful until you get a bunch of energy tanks. After the crap boss you fight while your energy is draining the whole time, it picks up drastically and the boss fights are some of the best I've witnessed. Also, the Morph Ball puzzles were pretty intricate and fun to conquer. If they just threw one more optional energy tank in the beginning I'd have no problem recommending it. I still don't really, but just know that from the 1 hour mark to around hour 4 it's pretty tough and there are 2 or 3 more difficulty spikes like that, that follow, though not to the same degree. Also, the atmosphere is very different from Prime 1, very dreary on purpose, but is just as high quality and unique for Metroid.

visor and beam switching with wii controls shouldn't leave your reticle at the edge of the screen. Each slice is like a minor tilt to their respective direction from the center.

Of course you should definitely play the best game in the trilogy.
Horizon, stop having good taste :3

Absolutely. Don't believe its detractors.
Well, I did like it less than MP1, and there's some gripes I have not to mention the original was way too hard for my preferences, but it's still a great game of which there aren't many like it, and the only others are within the same series. It's really disappointing it didn't inspire FPSes more, the closest that came to it was possibly Bioshock and not only was that following SS2 more than anything else but they screwed that all up in Infinite anyway.

You should definitely play it! It's my favorite in the trilogy. The atmosphere and world in that game is one of my (if not my) favorites in the Metroid series. It's always been kinda overshadowed by the first Prime, because Echoes didn't really do anything as amazing as the first game did. It's also regarded as being unfairly difficult in parts (they rebalanced it in the Wii version though).

I got a hankering for some GameCube era Nintendo and realized I never played Echoes.

What do you guys think? I would be playing it on a GameCube in all its 480i glory.

edit: my bad, meant for gaming : / mods please move.

Is it worth being alive? If so, you have your answer.

lol

The structure of it is brilliant, and immensely satisfying when you make it work for you.

It's a great piece of a great trilogy. You can't go wrong, honestly.

I never finished echoes but I remember it much more than prime. I was uncomfortable every time I was in the dark world but it was an uncomfortable feeling that spurred me on instead of one that made me want to put the controller down.

The environments were more extreme, the music was better, the bosses were thinkers, the suits were crazier, the gun mechanic sucked(in a good way), and I got lost easier. Seriously, that's why I haven't finished. I was on my way to an objective, turned off the game and came back two weeks later but couldn't find out where I was supposed to go.

Echoes is awesome.

Absolutely. Higher highs but lower lows than it's predecessor, but still sits along side it as one of the best of all time. It's also the second most difficult Metroid game behind the original.

At first I didn't realize it was better than Prime. I felt like I preferred Prime because its environments were more diverse. With subsequent play throughs I came to really appreciate the common threads connecting the different environments in Echoes though. The bleak, oppressive feel that haunts every step you take into Dark Aether is just too perfect at symbolizing everything Samus is fighting against.

It's also worth noting that the normal mode on the Trilogy version is easier than normal mode on the GCN version for Prime 2.

Prime 2 is the best of the Prime trilogy. The atmosphere in that game is amazing, better than even Prime 1. The constant feeling of hostility from the planet, nowhere really feels safe. And just like Prime 1 an amazing OST.

What do you guys think? I would be playing it on a GameCube in all its 480i glory.

You don't have to. Just homebrew your Wii U (in case you own one), rip Metroid Prime 2 and then play it on Wii U.

You could also get Metroid Prime Trilogy.

It always was my least favorite one, but it's still great. The trilogy pack has at least one of the bossbattles nerfed.

I don't see why not. I loved it at release. Haven't gone back to it (or any Metroid Prime since then tbh) but I remember it being fantastic.
I found it way more interesting than the segmented exploration and Saturday morning cartoon villains in Prime 3 :\

MP2 is absolutely fantastic. Don't even think of skipping it. Its level design might be too complicated for some people, but it still a stunning experience. The visuals are very good, the atmosphere and the various locations are great, the level design is out of this world, the OST is close to perfection and there are also tons of bosses compared to MP1.
MP1 is the definite classic but MP2 takes the same formula one step further and succeeds on many different levels.

Get yourself a Wii U and buy the Trilogy mate. They look great upscaled and sound even better plus you'll be able to enjoy ZombiU, The Wonderful 101, Rayman Legends, Wind Waker HD, Super Mario 3D World, Mario Kart 8, Bayonetta 2, X and SSBU plus whatever Megatons they're going to unleash at E3.

My favourite of all the Metroid games. It has the best bosses, the morph ball sections are unparalleled and it is the most atmospheric, foreboding and oppressive alien world ever conceived in a videogame. Stunning.

I'll have to give this another shot. I lost interest in the GC version back in the day because I disliked (and still do) the light/dark world schtick. At least I can replay using the Wiimote via the Trilogy edition.

I played the Wii version and the game was amazing. Never beat it though because of a stupid end game fetch quest.

I was mostly done with the fetch quest by the time I got to the actual endgame. It can be done all throughout the game if you just try exploring a bit.

I beat the game on my gamecube on a 42" Sony LED (in 480i) and I really loved it. It's not bette than Prime 1 though, which I played the year before.

Is it worth watching The Godfather at this point?

The classics will always be worth it. Prime 2 is amazing.

It's honestly my least favorite of the series, but it's a really excellent game regardless that's still got everything people love about the Prime games. You should totally play the Wii version if you can though.

Absofuckinglutely. I liked it better than the first, that said they're both very close to perfection. It can be somewhat frustrating at the very start until you get the hang of how things work.

The bossfight against the robot thing is one of the best designed boss battle of all time. So amazing.

yessir

My understanding is that the game on the Wii is actually easier than the original Gamecube version.

I beat the Gamecube version and had a bitch of time at some places.

Overall I did enjoy it.

I don't know....
I looooooooooooooooove this game, I feel kinda like I miss Talon 4 when I play this game but Aether is great too.
Dark Samus was awesome, the bosses were awesome. Heck eventhe bonuses were awesome!
It's even prettier than MP1, I kinda miss how phazon was really that big of a threat instead of a more minor threat ...then again Dark Aether was really dangerous.
And that last boss!
By god he kicked my ass on hard for such a long time!
I couldn't pull off the glitch to quick kill him and I couldn't beat him regularly for a long time.
The best and worst thing about the Trilogy version is the new game +, it's great to no longer have to kill a save to start anew but I feel that having scans already unlocked kinda kill the mood in the Prime games...

Hard in the Trilogy version is Normal in the GC version iirc.

Three modes :
Normal - Easy (not present in initial release)
Veteran - Normal
Hypermode - Hard

IIRC only MP3 had the easy mode to begin with and in all versions you need to finish the game once
