Is now a good/bad time to buy a PSP

I’m also thinking about buying (a white) one. Loco Roco, Metal Slug Anthology en Super Ghost’n Goblins are really looking very good! Not to mention being able to play old PSX favourites like FFVII this fall. Unfortunaly, it’s not a question of money but of time. There are simply to many games coming out on the DS, PC2 and 360. And the Wii is just around the corner.

DCharlie

And even i am moderately surprised
how do you know this?

the pile of 100+ PSP games, amazing Neo Geo emu, and my big fat smile.
Also - glorious screen + porn on a stick = sticky shorts ....

I wouldn't count FF7 in just yet. Sony hasn't said much of anything specific about PSone emulation.

i've been saying all week how Capcom has me about to buy a PSP so i might as well add it here as well.

There are a lot of things i dont like about the PSP, but the games (at least what im interested in) are really starting to ramp up.

As for the original question, a hardware redesign would be the only reason to NOT buy one now if you've been putting it off.

id think (besides a redesign) a price drop would be the main reason to wait. (or has this happened and i missed it? :p)

i only see about 4-5 titles that interest me at all on the PSP. same for the DS. im not touching either until they get a few more must have games and/or a price drop.

Ethnicity is not a race!
I waited for a redesign on the DS; I'll do the same for the PSP.

Daxter, Megaman and Siphon Filter are tempting me. Metal Slug and Ghouls n' Ghosts will put me over. I'm like action games / platform games / strategy games, and there looks to be enough of those by christmas this year to finally have me buying a Playstation Portable.

I just wish it wasn't damn near 100 bucks USD more than a DS. :(

The quality of the experience is definitely worth the extra money. I know a lot of people love DS's more simple style, and more power to them, but put a PSP next to a DS, and its obvious where you're money's going.

it is?

Both are fine objects to spend your money on.
I have both, but only played the DS Lite the last month. I really hate the loading times. I just can't stand them on PSP (Daxter is great, midnight club is hell).

Judging by the context, with "obvious where your money is going," he means that the higher price of the PSP is justified by the technology within, not that one is the obvious choice to buy instead of the other.

OMFG HOLY MOTHER OF MARY IN HEAVEN I CANT BELIEVE IT WTF WHERE ARE MY SEDATIVES AAAAHHH
Guys. I am hearing things about this new PSP UMDEmulator program that loads PSP ISOs off your mem stick. How reliable is this program and would you say it's worth getting? Are there any glitches during gameplay when you load a game off of the memstick? Any slowdowns or freezes? How much faster are the loadtimes?

Also, what are your thoughts on getting a pre-modded PSP such as *THIS ONE* ? Does it really allow you to switch between firmwares any time you want, and eleviates the need for a downgrader? Explain.

It's $500. Would you say it's worth it?

Man, i love this gadget. The browser is incredible, i can't wait to test it out at a nearby hot-spot. I played Ghost N Goblins at E3 and it's fantastic, can't wait for that one....

To justify $100 with less then 10 good games providing that experience is ridiculous (no this does not mean there are less then 10 good games on the PSP). Maybe there will be some more truth to this when games like Tekken and Metal Gear Solid come out, but right now it is still pretty baseless.

DCharlie

And even i am moderately surprised
whether there are 10 or less good games on the PSP is going to be open to each individual.

For me, some of the games i've enjoyed on the PSP wouldn't bat an eyelid in others...
I spent a fair amount of time playing Mahjong Fight club for instance - and i loved it.

As for Metal Slug - well, as long as they are up to the quality of the ZOMG Neo Geo emulator on PSP then everyone is in for a treat. The Neo Geo emu on PSP is simply fantastic. As a Slug-slag, it's like a dream come true (well, it'll be more of a dream come true when the MVS version of the emu is nailed and we can play MSX,MS3, MS4, MS5... drool)

PSP : it's like watching a bath full of hot lesbi@ns, you know it's hot, but there'll still be someone who is turned off.

UK PSP MAGAZINE reveals VERY INTERESTING details:
[...]
- PSone emulator also out in October: first games will be TOMB RAIDER, Castlevania SON (¡¡¡¡!!!!), FINAL FANTASY 7 and 8, SILENT HILL. Along 2007, near 7.000 psone titles will be available for the PSP.

7,000 PSOne titles available within 16 months huh? I'm just going to have to scratch my chin a little and just play the waiting game

What would make my day is a little dongle thing that fits in the USB mini port that would provide (Somehow) 2 extra shoulder buttons. Dual analogue/4 shoulder redesign FTBC?

Wipeout 2097 ASAP please - but would kind of take the desire to buy a new Wipeout game so will some of these companies want to play ball?

The 7000 is a bit on the high side, but that is the magazine speculating. Wikipedia states 7000 games have been released on PS1, this includes EU, JP, OZ and US (and more) releases of the same game. But still, there will be a shitload of games coming.

What the **** is the matter with you people

"Less than 10 good games"

i might draw a graph to show when this became a lie*

* you are lying to yourselves, sorry. :(
* to make the graph messurable in units larger than 'minutes', 'w@nking to porn' will not be counted as a game.

There is a reason I quoted sugarhigh4242. He said that there are games on the PSP that give a more quality experience then the DS that justify the $100 between the two, now obviously that doesn't mean all the good games on the PSP, just the ones you could not possibly ever experience on the DS because the downgrade would essentially kill that experience. However there still enough of those games to really justify the extra $100 still and by the time games like Tekken and MGS:pO come out who knows what Sony will do with the PSP's price. In other words, the technology within still doesn't justify the higher price of the PSP if you want it solely for gaming.

Perhaps in your opinion, but i feel if the gameplay experiences are equal between PSP and DS games and the PSP game takes full advantage of the PSP's technological advantage, I would say it's worth the difference.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, the quality (not volume) of the PSP audio is noticeable as well as the volume of content available from the storage medium used.
The infrastructure capabilities and storage (mem-stick) of the PSP for downloadable content in games adds to this advantage.
Move on to the graphical/physics advantages and it's easily worth it.

So far, I don't think enough developers have taken advantage of PSP's technological advantages enough, but games like Tekken, Brave Story, and LocoRoco coming in the future are proving to change this. I'm hoping Sony and 3rd parties continue heading in the right direction with the PSP and both the PSP and the DS can co-exist regardless of who is in the lead. The next step is starting to include infrastructure capabilities in games for a change.

You say this but haven't even played the best of the PSP games.

It's obvious the PSP and DS can already co-exsist, the the same way PS3 and Wii will.

And the "futuristic" titles are out now my friend. Tekken kicks your ass all over the place. :D

Leave the opinions to people who are actually playing the latest PSP games, not to your speculation.

it's hard to think of psp games that don't "take advantage of its technological advantages." 3d games that don't break your eyes with huge surly pixels? actual music rather than hissy tinny approximations thereof? even the arcade compilations that the psp screen actually has the resolution to display? TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANTAGES IN ACTION

you were better off with the "psp has no games" argument, tbh.

surely the next line of defense will be battery life...and then finally when all else fails the Japanese sales charts will make a cameo :p

Heh, the anti-PSP camp is just making less and less sense with every excellent PSP release.

All the trolling hasn't made sense to me since launch, but it's nice to see troll's strawman arguments get ripped to shreds with every feeble troll attempt towards the PSP now.

Btw, love DCharlie's lesbian relation. :lol

Right, but that article snippet is hardly official. Believe me, i hope it is exactly as they say, but i'm going to wait for Sony's official word before i get excited about it.

Until then, Riiiiidge Raaacer is all that's confirmed.

How is Loco Roco taking advantage of the PSP hardware? Is it using some kind of special technique I'm not aware of? 'Cause it looks pretty simple (although it's some kind of 3D I assume).

the battery life argument has never been relevant.

I can count on one hand the number of times the battery has run out on me over the course of a day and i've had the system since launch.

In fact, Nintendo fans have been very quiet about the fact that the new bright screen on the DS Lite has significantly reduced the battery life.

I still have one major complaint about the battery life, and that's the fact that they had to gimp to clock speed of the system in order to attain it (current)
They need to fix that oversight (and the screen pixel response) and it'll be all good.

Death of the 360 confirmed!

I'm still up in the air about getting a PSP or DS, the main positive for PSP is I travel on long train trips (3 1/2 hrs once or twice a fortnight) and a handheld that I can play games, movies and music on, plus virgin trains are wifi, seems like a better idea.

On a (not) totally unrelated note. I've been playing my old copy of Bust a Move (Groove) lately and I can't wait until I can play it anywhere (and Parappa)

I missed the part where the PSP fanboys* used Y's, Death Jr., and Untold Legends to defend the PSP.Instead I have heard Burnout, GTA, Metal Gear Acid, Lumines Ridge Racer, Wipeout, Hot Shots, Daxter, Sphyon Filter, Gradius Collection, MLB: the show, VP: Lenneth, and Street Fighter. If you don't like any of those games, you have no soul.

*Some of us own DS lites you know

I've used Untold Legends to defend the PSP. It's a great hack-and-slasher only marred by load times (I won't say otherwise). I've always added the caveat that many people don't like hack-and-slash games, but if you do, it's a great game, and amazing for a portable.

Since the X-Men hack-and-slash came out, you don't hear it mentioned as much becuase it's been surpassed, I suppose.

Depends on what you mean I suppose. Those levels where you play inside an animal with deformable floors/walls + 20 loco rocos with their own physics and ai +60 fps, ought to tax the CPU somewhat.

definitely good stuff, but i dunno. isn't Tekken just Tekken 5.5? i already got Tekken 5. Valkyrie is a port (granted a port that im getting because i dont have the original).

Madden? eh? why in the world get that on PSP? Powerstone looks.. not very good sadly. not sure why either. GTA:VCS im sure will be good, but again, just a remixed Vice City and im kind of tired of the series (and chances aren't bad of it going to PS2 -- i know thats not portable, but i play my portables in my house 90% of the time)

Killzone? bleh

Ratchet & Clank? getting on DAY ONE. :p Metal Slug Anthology I'll get on Wii.

so i mean, DEFINITELY some good stuff, but not a single game that's making me hyped as hell. just different tastes i guess.

Personally, i loved Liberty City Stories. The idea of revisiting the cities with a new story and new missions is a great idea for handhelds IMO. They shouldn't have brought it to PS2 though.

Have you seen Killzone Liberations? Its totally different from the PS2 game. The response at E3 was very positive.

The real blockbusters will be MGS and FF7:Crisis Core, but they probably won't be out until Jan/February.
