Is Switch potentially becoming the main console for many now?

I honestly haven't touched my switch since I played Mario Kart 8 Deluxe the day it arrived.

No other games I like yet and so many third party games I enjoy on others.

Yes I'm playing my Switch a lot more than my other consoles and I'm finding myself more and more wishing my games were on the Switch than the other platforms. One example is Friday the 13th. I can only play it on my PS4 when my kid goes to sleep. If it was on the switch I'd be able to play it a lot more.

Or Sony just needs a Switch like PS4.

Rip my Vita

Got the Switch day one for Zelda and not disappointed. Besides playing BOTW and the occasional Mario Kart races I'm still spending most of my time replaying Dark Souls 3 over and over and over.

I mainly play PC, but between the games and the form factor, I've already played it more than my PS4. Which I bought for Destiny the Taken King. What a shit game that was :/

If we ever see things like Wolfenstein, Anthem, AC: Origins, NFS Payback, Evil Within, Overwatch, Diablo, Prey, etc come to the system, then I could 100% see it as my main system. But that will never happen, so it will forever be the thing that collects dust between exclusives and travel ( which is OK, I guess ).

It will forever remain what people play their Nintendo games on. Until third parties come to the Switch in the same way Xbox One and PS4 gets third parties, the Switch will only be the "main" console of Nintendo fanboys, tbh, and they'll be happy for every scrap of non-Nintendo game that happens to come their way.

In my opinion, no. It's just a more attractive companion console for most than the Wii U was. People are going to have their Xboxes, PlayStations and PCs. For years now I've been of the mind that Nintendo doesn't need to compete for the same piece of the pie as the other three when they can position themselves as the go-to secondary system and go along with every slice, so to speak.

It just might if Nintendo pulled their finger out of their arse with VC and the games I want.
I need a F-Zero revival, Metroid Prime Trilogy and a few a WiiU re-releases.
I really don't mind missing out on COD, Destiny, etc.

Steam at home, and Switch on the go.

Sold my PS4. Feels good, honestly. #fuckabacklog

That is genius !

I just received a Switch as a gift and after spending some time looking at the library and the cost of the games and accessories, I can confidently say, with respect to my gaming habits, "no, the Switch will not become my main console."

I liked Nintendo. I have owned almost every one of their systems up to and including the Wii (no Game Boy Advance and no Virtual Boy are the two big exceptions). However, my favorite games were always third party. I am not seeing that in the Switch and I already have huge backlogs in Steam, PS3, PS4, and PS TV.

The cost of their games and accessories is punishing. I need a case, a screen protector, and probably some kind of adaptor to make the controls like a traditional controller or a classic controller (I have very large hands). That's at least $100 more. 1, 2 Switch , the only game my wife us interested in, is $60 and Mario Kart is $80 (CAD). Nintendo rarely puts their games on sale. That is $140 for the must have games for the system. At a total of $240 before tax, I could buy a new Vita and take my existing library on the road.

I am going to be buying games for this thing only out of obligation to the gift givers (in laws we see regularly) plus it will be good when friends with children come over. Each Nintendo tax priced game will leave me thinking of the multiple games I could be getting on a PSN or Steam sale or through used physical copies of PS4 or PS3 discs.

I think the back and forth is just a matter of how the OP is read.

No one would dispute that the Switch can be the main or only console for a lot of gamers. Be it portable only/mostly gamers, huge Nintendo fans, people who don't like mainstream AAA games etc.

But may read the OP as asking whether it can become the main/only console for a majority of gamers. That's clearly not the case given the types of games that sell the most in the huge western console gamer market--the CoDs, Fifas, Forzas, Uncharteds, Halos, GTAs, AssCreeds etc.

Hell, even the Wii was definitely not the main console for more than 50% of gamers. It sold 100 million or so, but the PS3 and 360 sold over 160 million combined. Not to mention the huge number of DSs. Wii was the main for Nintendo fans, kids/families and the casuals that bought it who didn't own other consoles in recent years. A big part of its sales though was it was the perfect complement to a 360 or PS3. There's a reason why Wii60and PSWii were common phrases/memes.

I view the Switch similarly. There's a huge niche of portable gamers, Nintendo fans, kids/families, gamers that don't like mainstream AAA games etc. for whom it can be their main or only platform. But that's not a majority of the gaming market. For a majority a PS4 or PC or X1 will be their main and for a large subset of them a Switch will be a perfect complementary platform to add Nintendo games and portability to the mix vs. getting another of the other boxes that play mostly the same types of games.

Nintendo fans need to calm down about The Switch. It's a success yes, but it's not suddenly going to catapult Nintendo to #1.

Obviously it's not my "main" console yet because the library isn't mature yet. Will it get AAA multiplats in 2018 and beyond? I don't know. What I do know is I would opt for a 720p30 Switch version of a game in favor of a 1080p60 PS4 version.

The added fidelity is not as important as being able to play during my commute, and between handheld, tabletop and TV with zero barriers or time wasted. Switch essentially triples my play time.

It is quite annoying to see many "unnecessary" Switch threads (DAE, Is Switch...etc). We get it, the Switch is doing well, but let's wait a year or two from now.

At the moment, I'm waiting for a "play in spurts" game. MK8 is okay, but I can never connect online and 3 laps is too long for me. I've never tried Splatoon, but I'll wait for reviews.

Every second post being about Nintendo fans needing to "calm down" isnt much better either...its crazy how everyone turns into snowflakes whenever Switch is mentioned in general fashion or in a topic not specific about Switch.

Its not that difficult to ignore or skip discussions about a plattform you are interested in...yet in many Switch related threads the no-Switch talk police always show up to remind everyone to behave and keep the Switch talk/excitement to a minimum lol.

PS4 remains my primary console, but my Switch has replaced my Vita for travel (I still rock my Vita a bit at home though while watching tv). I used to remote play a lot, but the Switch is fantastic for bringing to gatherings with friends and family.

I can't wait for the holidays after Mario and Xenoblade come out too. Also the Switch seriously needs a good Mario Party game. That'll be a big hit with friends and family.

Really, the switch design is brilliant. Nintendo really lost me a bit in the Wii/Wii U era, but they pulled me right back in with the Switch. Gotta give them props for innovating in the right ways this time.

IMO A casual gamer can pick up a Switch and have it be there main or only console much like what happened with the Wii. I consider myself harcore and own most if not all the consoles and PC. I dont ride the bus or train and i perfer not to carry another device around. That being said I would never consider to have switch as my main system. PS and Xbox/PC are always going to have better versions of multplats and Online services that i enjoy. Switch has some amazing 1st party titles like Loz Botw, Mario Kart 8 and more to come but a hardcore gamer IMO will need more.

As long as I've got a PS4 and XBO, the Switch will be my system for exclusives and for the occasional game that I'd rather play on-the-go. I haven't touched it since finishing Zelda.

I haven't really touched my Switch since Zelda. I have Mario Kart 8, but it just hasn't pulled me in like I thought it would. Switch would really have to be on par with Xbox One X and PS4 Pro in hardware, services and 3rd party support for it to become my main. It is going to pretty much just be relegated to 1st party stuff or the random titles I do want on the go. And I have used it a ton during flights, but definitely don't like using it on the go as much as I thought I would. So yeah, pretty much same as with every Nintendo console since the N64 for me.

Only pick up my switch to play a little bit of zelda and mario kart. I can get most of the switch games on my pc for cheaper and I don't take my switch out regularly. It would use it a lot more if I could watch YouTube, netflix, Hulu etc on there.

Is this a meme parody? Or are you 12?

I'm not one that stoped playing on my other consoles for the switch. It's a combination of great games across multiple consoles .. that I'm greatful for. It's a great time to be gamer.

It's not been made my primary platform so far. I got a pc that I use a lot both to play games and for general use. Though I've decided that I'd rather get my indie games on the switch instead of the pc because of the portability.

I was thinking of getting a ps4 before I decided for a switch and the switch has made me decide to skip the ps4. I just don't have the time or money for another console to be worthwhile in addition to my pc which I use at home and the switch that I use as a handheld.

No, but for indies in particular, it's pretty much where I want everything. I'll spend a little more for the convenience of playing on that console, and even more if a nice physical version is offered.

Everything else besides exclusives will likely be better elsewhere and my preferred choice, even factoring in the handheld convenience.

I haven't noticed any such trend of people stopping playing PS4/XBone to play on Switch, but maybe these people are hardcore Nintendo fans who were forced to play more on other consoles last year or so because there was fuck-all coming out on Wii U for like a year leading up to the Switch.

The only gamers I see the Switch being their main console is hardcore Nintendo fans. It just wouldn't make sense to use the console unless it's for the first party games.

I have a PS4 but haven't touched it since I got it, my brother has pretty much claimed it at this point, the Switch is my main system and I couldn't be happier. If the PS4 was portable I'd actually play it.

It's you that needs to calm down, because that's not at all what this thread is about.

Maybe you should read a thread before posting in it.

Here you guys have an example:

Plain and simple no.

You need games to start to become a main platform unless of course you are only Switch owner.

Since I got the Switch I've been a bit down on other console games because everything I've played since I would've preferred to play on the Switch.

Every time a game is announced I see if it's out on switch and if it's not hype reduced by 10%.

I'm probably being an idiot but it is what it is.

You think a hardcore gamer is going to main a system without major third party games? Destiny, Wolfenstein, Anthem, AC: Origins, NFS Payback, Evil Within, Overwatch, Diablo, Prey,(borrowed list from poster above) are a lot of big titles that wont be on Switch. So yes IMO a hardcore gamer wont be using Switch as a main console. Don't take offense

I've been rocking PC + Nintendo since the early 2000s. I've found through the years, that was basically the ultimate combo for my tastes in games.

So the Switch is my "main" console, but it's not the only machine I game on.

But what's been even more bizarre is the frequent number of posters amongst here or elsewhere who have stopped gaming on PS4, Xbone, etc. and started played exclusively on Switch. Why could that be?
I have seen literally no evidence of this at all. Are you creating some kind of weird narrative here or have I missed a ton of posts by people abandoning hardware?

The Switch has had a great launch with some good looking upcoming games and it's been popular which is great for Nintendo but other consoles and PCs are still selling and being played as much as before I'm sure.

I can only assume that he likes it for the portability maybe? How a PS4 sits around unplayed while the Switch gets all the action is something I can't comprehend lol. But hey, to each their own.

It's not just the portability but the convenience of playing your games where, when and how you want.

There are many examples in this very thread, one just a few posts up. Of course there's no statistical evidence of what the OP is claiming though.

Right now my Switch is collecting dust and probably will continue doing that until Mario Rabbids/Odyssey.

In the long-term I can see it joining my PS4 for console exclusives. PC will always be my preferred platform.

The problem is your apparent idea of what a 'hardcore' gamer is.

Switch will never be my main gaming platform.

Switch facilitates console gaming experiences on the go, moreso than the Vitas/PSPs/Nomads of the past did. That's cool and I find myself using my Switch pretty often these days.

PC facilitates gaming experiences that consoles simply do not, and often cannot.

As long as I can't play games like Civ, ARMA, and Tabletop Simulator on Switch, it'll never be my main console or gaming platform. More accurately, PC will always be my main gaming platform.

Switch's novelty isn't enough to change that. Nintendo's own games aren't enough to change that, either; even though I unabashedly love most of what Nintendo puts out, their games will never suck me in like the games I -don't- talk about on GAF: Infinitely-emergent PC games like the ones I just mentioned.

PS4 and Xbox One, too, facilitate unique experiences for me, in the context of my life - they enable me to play multiplats I skipped extremely cheaply at a later date. They enable me to enjoy solid visuals and sound on my living room setup. They enable me to play quality exclusive games outside of the living room using my PCs! I made a thread about how that kind of shit is magical to me. Nobody responded :(

Oh, did I mention PS4 and Xbox One actually have games?

Needless to say, they're still more than competitive with my Switch for my time - and though they haven't been winning that fight, I'll admit it's because Switch is the new, novel thing and I wanna use it as often as possible because just -using- it feels novel. That'll wear off someday, and then, Switch will live and die by its library.

Yeah thanks, I had a quick scroll through after posting and saw a couple. I can see how some people may prefer it, especially for those that want the portability aspect or travel a lot it could become their main system. I haven't seen enough declarations it seems worth a thread but I'm not in a lot of Switch threads so could be why.

The problem is your apparent idea of what a 'hardcore' gamer is.

I would consider a hardcore gamer to be interested in playing most games. That includes Switch, PC, Xbox, PS titles and more. I don't look down on anyone that doesn't want to play other titles I just don't consider them hardcore. You can go through my post history I'm a day 1 Switch buyer(it was on my birthday) so I'm not slamming Switch owners. No console wars at my house.

*raises hand*

Literally haven't played my PS4 once since buying a Switch and it's seeming like I won't again (outside of Shenmue 3!)
The Switch has actually redefined how I game and also what I want from gaming.

When I got a Game Gear on Christmas morning a long time ago I was disappointed I couldn't put my Mega Drive cartridge into it and play 'real' Sonic.
The Switch is a 20 year dream come true which has arrived at exactly the right time. Love it.
