Is TAS version of Batman the best version of Batman?

Artist Rick Celis has been redrawing Snyder/Capullo covers in Animated Series style.

Love it. Now I want a Bruce Timm Court of Owls movie.

Damian is trash.

Tim is numero uno.

This looks sweet, what book is it in?
DC need a subscription service like Marvel's, STAT!

Also, to the general posters, when and where did all this Dick/Babs/Bruce drama go down? I watched Batman TAS as a kid, but I was pretty young and I was done before the art change. I never much got into Superman TAS, I caught some Batman Beyond, and I never watched Justice League. Do we see Dick or Nightwing kinds of drama in TAS? Is Tim Drake in TAS? Or is much of this stuff in Justice League? Also, when did we get Batgirl in TAS, if ever? Thanks!

Yeah, Freeze devolved into a maniac for crappy reasons as well. I forget how Clayface turned out.
Clayface essentially died, but then came back for a Justice League episode, looking for a cure to his condition. B:TAS made it seemed like he died. That episode of B:TAS is one of my favorites, because it has a really emotional arc involving Tim and this "girl" that's really a piece of Clayface that broke off and became sentient.
Anything featuring Professor Milo was pretty bad.

Even the first Clayface episode? Or the JLU episode where Superman and Doomsday fight to the death on an island that's being wrecked by a volcano and Eisling sent kryptonite-tipped nukes to the island? In the latter episode he even gets his neck straight broke.

Probably. The animated show suffered due to having to be appropriate for kid, which led to some cheesy scenarios and odd decisions, but it still got the character of Batman down perfectly.

Poison Ivy's re-design and the 'Holiday Knights' episode made The New Batman Adventures worth it tbh.

That episode where they acted totally out of character? Ivy was so far off standard.

If we're talking New Batman Adventures Redesigns, Joker aside, Catwoman was the second-worst:

Blob of black with a few points. (Triangle breasts!) Skin that's sort of a mix of eggshell white with a touch of blue? Honestly, if it weren't for the Joker's bug eyes, it would be the worst downgrade. I'm not a fan of her unmasked look changing too, but I recognize that's closer to her other designs, and makes some sense for her. I think they even redesigned Isis. (Snowball II situation possibly, but I don't think so.)

Yep, definitely my second most hated redesign.

Also didn't like the Riddler's redesign
but he had no actual episodes and only appeared as a cameo at most in a couple of eps, so meh..

In their defense they also came up with that amazingly badass Scarecrow design.

latest
The New Batman Adventures Scarecrow design is so good.

Instead of just throwing a sack on his head, they made a design subtly reminiscent of a scarecrow while being fucking terrifying.

He looks less like a scarecrow & more lie a undead preacher. Good change if you ask me.

Yeah. Like most syndicated tv animation, the episodes were animated at different studios around the world. When you needed to get 65 episodes made within a short amount of time, that was necessary in those days.

The animation done at studios like TMS (Two-Face part 1, Feat of Clay part 2, The Demon's Quest) and Spectrum (P.O.V., Robin's Reckoning part 1, Heart of Ice) looked fantastic and rivals anything done for TV....ever.

On the other hand you had studios like Akom that did some very mediocre animation (Christmas with the Joker, Moon of the Wolf, Cat Scratch Fever). For the most part, I think the show is extremely well-animated.

What sucks is that Akom didn't do too many episodes, but they did do 4 of the Joker episodes. The 4 worst Joker episodes in the series, for my money.

I'd say Akom straight up ruined the damn Mad as a Hatter episode, which suuuuucks, because the script by Paul Dini is excellent. Like that episode should've been on Heart of Ice level if it had even competent animation.

Spectrum was the best, to the point that you'd wish they would do everything.

Blue Pencil only did a few episodes, and they're usually...TOO animated. Like its real off-model how rubbery everybody is and how many key frames they use.

Dong Yang did most of them I believe, good if unspectacular. They would handle the bulk of TNBA/BB as well.

Tokyo Movie Shinsa did a few real good ones, like Two-Face part 1, The Demon's Quest, Read My Lips, and of course the famous Feat of Clay Pt. 2

Feats of Clay is the perfect case study of BTAS' crazy swings of animation quality, since part 1 is as stiff and stilted as part 2 is fluid and detailed.

part 1 is AKOM, the most incompetent of all BTAS animation studios. A truly awful episode really even outside that, a really convoluted set-up with a boring protagonist, awful dialog, lazy staging...

I don't think Milo was in Clayface part 1? I'd have to watch it again. I know Dagget was the antagonist, so I guess it's possible.

The animation in 'Had as a Hatter' is probably the best work they did, but it's still iffy, yeah. I still really love that episode, though. Love hurts, man.

I think he had a really small role working for Dagget. Or that's another episode, because he had a really miniscule part in an episode before "Cat Scratch Fever". Or at least I thought. Was he in "Tiger, Tiger"? Because that episode was trash.

YOU CAN'T DO THIS TO ME! I AM INVINCIBLE! I AM BAAAAAANE!
[THA-THUMP THA-THUMP THA-THUMP THA-THUMP THA-THUMP THA-THUMP THA-THUMP]

He did a better job in the episode where
Batgirl dies
.

In an unrelated note, I really like the Penguin and Nightwing themes.

Nightwing
Penguin

No kidding. Anyone who likes the TAS should check out Cybersix which also aired on Fox Kids.

I remember this show being around, and I know I've watched a few episodes, but I can't remember what it was about.

Budget. Kids WB worked with much lower budgets than FOX Kids did in the early '90s.
Always wanted to know the names behind the studios who animated TAS. God, Robin's Reckoning was damn near PERFECT. Did Spectrum do the Sub Zero movie, too? I noticed the slight shadows on the whites of the eyes of Batman from RR also made it into that film.

Also, who did the HARDAC episodes? Specifically Soul of Silicon. And also See No Evil?

Honestly the Timmverse is the best DC comics ever. BTAS is perfection and Bruce's arc all the way through Batman Beyond is so well done. Superman is perfection in TAS and Justice League. The Man Who Has Everything is Superman written as his most human emotionally and its incredible.

This was a decade plus of DC's heroes done better then the comics ever managed in the hands of Bruce Timm and Paul Dini and I doubt we will ever see anything like it again with how huge superheroes have become.

Animation duties for Sub-Zero were split between Dong Yang and Koko Enterprise.

Heart of Steel parts 1 and 2 were done at Sunrise while His Silicon Soul and See No Evil were done at Dong Yang.

You can see which studios did which episodes here

I am like the only person who did not hate the Bane episode

The ending is a bit of a cop-out, sure, but what else could they do? There's no way Fox censors would let them go through with Bane breaking Batman's back and the rest of the Knightfall stuff.

Yeah they really did Bane poorly in TAS.
I felt the same way. Very disappointing.

It wasn't a bad episode, it's just that considering the character, I feel like it should have been a two-parter. We got a fucking two-parter with Red Claw or whomever that bitch was. Like most Catwoman-centric episodes, that shit was boooooooring. That being said, Bane was far better in the episode "Over the Edge" and the movie Mystery of the Batwoman.

For TV? Yes. Can't lie I have a hard time watching these as an adult, the dialogue and naivity of big characters is something that never stood out as a kid. Would love to see some recent work that overcomes this, any recommendations?

I think the last TAS batman I watched was the Mr freeze movie. And the Anime. They were OK.

I've been going through the series and I enjoy it. Some episodes are a bit too wacky for my tastes but overall I like it. Just watched the Legend Of The Dark Knight episode and it was so cool to see a part of The Dark Knight Returns in that.

Yes

But I don't read the comics so I'll add the caveat that it's certainly the best moving/animated/acted version.

For me no-one comes close to the one-two of TAS Batman vs TAS Joker especially.

Will forever be my head cannon

I've been binge watching Justice League, and man, JL is coming close to being just as good as Batman TAS, maybe even slightly better in some regards. It feels a bit more consistently good, although it lacks some of the more emotional and dark episodes of Batman. But Justice League is some great stuff. It's even making me like Superman, which I didn't really think I would since I wasn't much of a fan of him before. Although I'll still be confused on how a disease that only affects men somehow affected Manhunter and Superman. That's not how diseases work...

Despite how everyone has god like powers and are basically indestructible, it's the mortal man in the costume that is the most intimidating to the criminals. Although the show doesn't seem too shy of noting that Batman has some severe weaknesses due to not having any powers, since he always seems to be the one needed help when stuff starts going down. Notably, because he can't fly, and a grapple hook can only get you so far. They seem to do a good job with how they present characters and their personalities to make sure there isn't any overlap. Lantern is serious, Superman instill confidence and is a goody, Batman is intimidating and always a step ahead of everyone, Hawkgirl is rugged, Flash is obnoxious, Wonder Woman is naive and an outsider, and Martian Manhunter is overpowered but always seems to have a thingmagig that messes with his powers, or he just stays home for some reason. Oh yea, and he's quiet and deadpan and an outsider or whatever.

There were areas I didn't think they'd go either. Like, I was sort of half expecting them to make a race reference in the one episode where they go to a 1950s comic book era, but felt like they wouldn't do it. And then they did it. And the "all men must die" or whatever episode, makes quite a few pretty blatant sexual references.

It's pretty stupid Batman TAS, Superman TAS and New Adventures are on Amazon Video, but Justice League and JL:U are only on Netflix, while Static Shock and Batman Beyond aren't on either, meaning you have to go all around just to watch the entire DCAU. I wanted to watch Justice League for awhile, but assumed it wasn't anywhere because it wasn't on Amazon like the others. Took me awhile (a few months, up until last week) to realize they were on Netflix.
