Is the Academy trolling Leo with the Oscars?

He should have won one in 2013. If it wasn't for his costar and Daniel Day Lewis. Bad luck.

This might be his year, a lot of so called award films like Steve Jobs and Fassbenders alleged performance are tanking. Depp might have him beat, though.

how the FUCK Samuel L Jackson didn't get nominated in that movie

like c'mon now...they gon have to make up that shit in Hateful Eight, which I heard he and Jennifer Jason Leigh have the biggest parts(I also heard its 3+ hours with an intermission and an overture, because Tarantino)

lol what 3 hours?

No way. I can believe there being a cut that is 3 hours however no way is a theater version going to be 3+ hours.

There's no maybe about it. I've never liked his acting and I don't think he's that good. I'm actually surprised he's gotten that many nominations. Popularity nominations I suppose.
It wouldn't surprise me if he never wins an Oscar.

I agree 100%

I'm baffled by his adoration by some.

You have to be able to see the guy has talent, when directors on the level, of Scorsese, Cameron, Danny Boyle, Eastwood, Spielberg, Nolan and Tarantino all use him he must be doing something right.
Everytime I edit this I think of another director the guys resume is insane.

Or maybe,

maybe,

maybe Leo's just not that good?

Jim Carrey's never even been nominated. His performances for The Truman Show, Man on the Moon, and Eternal Sunshine were brilliant. And they didn't even nominate him

Well, Jim Carrey is supposedly a notorious asshole. Though he absolutely deserved at least a nomination for Truman Show.

He's a good actor. He's not a great actor. He has never lost to people who weren't better, and didn't give a better performance.

lol some edgy contrarian ass people up in here on some confirmation bias thinking they're justified in shitting on Leo because he hasn't actually won an Oscar yet.

The dude is an undeniably amazing actor. Get any idea contrary to that out of your head. With the performances he has given over the years, you lose that argument 10 times out of 10.

Leo may not have given the best performance every time he has been nominated but he gets the nomination so often because he is one of the best working actors today and has been for going on over two decades. It's no small wonder he has a huge fanbase rooting for him to finally get that mark of recognition.

The only year Leo was nominated for a great performance was Wolf of Wall Street, and he's still only my 3rd favorite from the list, behind Ejiofor and McConaughey(who won).

The Leo Oscar meme is some weird joke the mainstream latched onto because he's the most popular actor they actually recognize who actively tries really hard to appear in popular prestige pictures they actually heard of. Its not like he's being robbed or anything.

He was great in What's Eating Gilbert Grape!

Shit, it's a bigger sin that Sigourney Weaver hasn't won.

Deserved it for Alien, Year of Living Dangerously, Gorillas in the Mist, maybe Aliens.

No, they were trolling Peter O'Toole. Leo, he's pretty young and there's plenty of time to mature. Maybe he should stop playing unlikeable rich playboys for awhile.

^ Why do this back to back?

Now Leo's goal in life is get 4 more nominations and beat Peter P'Tool's record (while banging supermodels).

Besides Catch me if you can and arguably Blood Diamond, I really don't know of any role he's had where I considered his performance. He comes off as flat in most performances.

Basketball Diaries, Titanic, Catch Me If You Can, Blood Diamond, The Departed, Revolutionary Road, Django Unchained. Even Wolf of Wall Street was a good performance all things considered.

Leo's always good or very good but almost never truly great. I get why people like him and want him to win, but I don't think he's ever really been 'snubbed'.

Well, I've yet to see him turn in an Oscar worthy performance. Leo's "acting" usually just amounts to yelling really loud. The only performance I thought he gave that was really great was "Catch Me If You Can" and maybe you could count "Blood Diamond." Now, I'm not saying he's a bad actor but he's just nothing amazing, he turns in a competent performance each time.

EDIT:

All that said, are you telling me Edward Norton, Harrison Ford, and Will Smith have never won an Oscar?

I don't think I've ever really been impressed with any of his roles either. He's always just seemed competent in the parts I've seen him in.

It's crazy to me that this many people think Leo is just a mediocre actor. I've greatly enjoyed every movie I've seen him in. I can't say that for many other actors. Maybe only Tom Hanks.

Man I didnt know we had so many acting experts on this site..

Like ya'll have a damn clue.

The man is still nominated which suggests a damn good acting performance. Seriously he's been a part of some of the biggest and most memorable films of all time. You don't get his roles by being a shit actor.

Exactly. Im sure someone will find a movie but how many films has Leo been in where you walk out and think "man Leo really fucked that up".

None.

You're right you get them by being an slightly better than average, attractive, young, white male.

Love Leo, but all of my favorite performances of his aren't even nominated ones! It's crazy he has four acting nominations, but the ones I found super memorable or great (Catch Me If You Can, Django, The Departed, etc.) were overlooked by the Academy.

He's essentially a lock for a Best Actor nod this year with The Revenant, but I think it's Depp's to lose as of right now.

I'd be his biggest fan if the day he actually wins an Oscar, he pulls a Sacheen Littlefeather/Marlon Brando and rejects the statue.

Too bad he cares too much.

that would rock. i'd think less of him if he actually yearns for awards recognition like this weird online narrative suggests though.

Leo is the epitome of mediocrity. Puts on very elaborate costumes, affects okay accents, yet never is able to make one come even close to forgetting that it's Leonardo Dicaprio you're watching. Very little grace in his physical mannerisms, very little subtlety or depth to his characterization, no ability to truly elevate a role beyond what's on the page.

Ehh, I think that's more of an internet meme then anything else. I don't think Leo has ever mentioned it.

At the end of the day he's gonna get his "apology Oscar" for a role that isn't necessarily his best.

Tis' true.

I actually wished he wasn't cast in Django as there are tons of actors who would have killed his part. Instead, we get treated to Leo yelling louder and louder for an hour.

I think his desperation for it is getting more than noticeable. He's putting himself into roles that practically scream "GIVE ME AWARD." The Academy noticeably skews its awards towards biopics, and the man has attached himself to 3 more after Wolf and The Revenant, one where he plays a serial killer, another where he'll play President Wilson, and the third being Rasputin himself.

I think, he just wants his Oscar and then he'll retire. He's been saying he's going to take a long break, and getting that gold is a good note to "retire" for a bit.

I think the problem with Leo is he's way to consistently good. I believe if took fa few years off from making movies. He would win on his first movie back
