Is The Evil Within on consoles supposed to suffer from major frame rate issues? Help

So how is the performance on PC?

Can I get a locked 30fps with a GTX670 2gb with most things maxed out ? i7 @ 4.2 16gb ram
I wanted to get this game when I buy a PS4 but reading this thread is changing my mind =\

Yes you can. I have a very similar setup: GTX 670 2gb Jetstream factory oc, 3770k @ 4 Ghz, 8 GB ram @ 2133 Mhz and the game is installed on a WD Black Sata 3 HDD.

The game runs at 48 fps with the 30 fps lock @ 1080p (cause of my 144hz monitor) and the lowest i've seen it dip is 32 fps. That is with SMAA, all settings maxed, letterboxing disabled @ 1080p. If i drop it down to 720p with the same settings it plays at 70-80 fps. Ocasional texture pop-in aside the game looks good and plays fluidly.

My question is, does the game get better at any point? I'm not talking about the framerate I mean the game itself. I'm at the beginning of chapter 3 and so far I don't think it's a very good game. The story is bullshit, the voice acting is horrendous and the combat seems pretty bad so far....also what is the point in burning bodies?

The frame rate on PS4 is atrocious. And the D-pad in menus works only sporadically. It's a shame considering I otherwise like the game.

Well you're about 60 minutes into a 15 hour game so I'm not sure what you're expecting in terms of story at that point in the game.

If you're not enjoying it by the end of chapter 3 I highly doubt the game is for you. Matches are used to conserve ammo by burning enemies, shoot them in the legs and drop a match. The combat, atmosphere & ammo management are the game's bread 'n butter.

Holy crap, those videos are terrible. And I thought it was bad when I tried the PC demo and it ran at 40-60.

It's doubly bad because the game doesn't look all that great nor does any level have impressive scale or anything. Add the overbearing post-processing colours, the messy IQ, the intrusive black bars and hugely noticeable performance drops and there's no way to praise the game's technical execution on consoles.

PC version was fine from what I've seen. You can tone down the post-processing, improve IQ, remove the black bars and fps are stable with a decent rig.

Huh, recently finished the game on PS4 and replayed that chapter a lot to farm Gel and it never got this bad to me. Looks like something's wrong with your copy or something. It had drops but nothing like that.

Game runs like pure shit on PS4. I deleted it pretty early into it and never looked back.

I really don't notice the frame rate issues on PS4 but those black bars infuriate me. I refuse to give them more money though by switching to the PC version. Plus that season pass seemed to be a joke. It's been 5 months and nothing.

The game proper starts at chapter 3. Its where you're finally asked to start using all the mechanics and skills at your disposal.

Does anybody have any experience playing this on the XO? Better/worse/samey performance?
Similar overall framerate, but apparently it has some frame pacing problems that introduce extra choppiness. So yea, even worse.

Should have got it on Steam when it was $20 last week, because unfortunately the game is a technical mess on consoles. It's a shame too because it was one of my favorites of last year but knowing most people play the console version with awful FPS and black bars means people didn't get to experience it the way I did and it undoubtedly colored their impressions of the game.
I actually think about these external factors a lot during year-end deliberations.

With messy releases like this, there will always be a ton of lost votes because people didn't get to experience the game "at its best". Poorly optimised PC ports, console versions running at lower IQ/fps etc. Imagine someone playing Shadow of Mordor on PS3. You think that game will turn up in his top 10 goty list? Probably not.

Maybe I dont notice so much but it seemed to run more than 95% of the time smooth for me. Played all the way through with only slight dips here and there (when there were several things going on at once). Played on Xbox One so I cant judge how it does on other consoles.

The game runs like crap on PS4. Some areas are worse than others (the first few chapters are almost unplayable), but don't expect it to get much better. It's incredible to me how someone looked at this game and thought "yup, ready to be shipped". The graphics are terrible, PS3 tier really, which I wouldn't really mind if the framerate wasn't the WORST I've seen in quite some time.

Sorry for the rant. I bought this game with a friend and lost all interest after seeing him play for a while. Worst purchase this gen

Haha talk about thread backfire considering he immediately mentions his gaming PC.

lol yeah. Haven't been following PC gaming as much for like the last 3 months or so since I ended up getting my brother a PS4 and we ended up co-oping through a shit ton of games (Destiny/Far Cry 4).

And now I'm even more sad that I missed a darn sale last week, before I even came back.

I fuuuuucked up loool

EDIT: Also I see alot of people mentioning that it actually gets better after Chapter 3? It's gonna be tough and headache inducing, but I'm gonna try to get through it in a bit, give the game one final chance. If Chapter 4 isn't getting any better than I'm just gonna call it a loss and wait for a Steam sale so I can finally enjoy this more haha.

I like the game for what it is but the game runs like absolute arse on PS4. The black bars don't even make sense as they sure as hell aren't smoothing the frame rate. Game also has a rough start with the first few chapters being bleh. It does improve a lot though.

OK man. You clearly know best about how they could and should have optimized the game. Perhaps you should give them a call and let them know what they're doing wrong and how to fix it at this point.

Yes definitely.
Wait a minute, how do you know they give their best for the console version?

Thank god for the PC version, I'd have never played the game on any console otherwise. The game was in my top 5 GOTY list last year.

Oh also I highly recommend downloading the demo on Steam, it lets you play up until chapter 3 and then continue on with your progress if you buy the game.

Also I will never understand people getting pissy about season passes, just don't buy the damn things until DLC is out.

I had no idea it was that bad. I remember Papacheecks trying to convince people to go with the PS4 version, yikes. Anyway, here's something that is bugging me to the point of wanting to start a thread about it: Why do console games never get performance improvements through patches? Why couldn't the developers deliver similar improvements to the console side as they did with PC?

If you can unload that PS4 copy and grab the PC version you'll be much happier op. No letterbox and 60 fps presentation.

There have been cases where console games get technically improved through patches. Unity for example. Zone of the enders 2 as well...got a native 1080p patch and runs flawlessly at 60fps on PS3 as opposed to the original 720p and almost 30 fps at all times.

But the thing is, that isn't going to make much difference if the base game is fundamentally compromised on set hardware. Going back and redoing everything systematically to get better performance isnt anywhere near as easy as updating drivers to make things run better. On PC, that's just to get your hardware running as it should have from the start no?

On console, your basically just running with what you have. It may be the case that this game as it was coded just doesn't work well on the consoles.

My question is if this will use SLI? I have the minimum required GPU (GTX 460 1GB) but I have two of them in SLI so I'm hoping that improves my performance...

Holy crap, those videos are terrible. And I thought it was bad when I tried the PC demo and it ran at 40-60.

40-60 fps is a bad framerate? That's easily double what most console games have.

are there any DLC plans for this game? if there is, it might give us one more shot at some optimization.

Two story add-ons will come with the season pass and a Boxhead mode or something. But I don't know about optimization. PC is okay now and let's see if they care about consoles.

I played it on PC with a stable 60, sold off my PS4 version. Would definitely rate the console version lower because of the performance and letterboxing. PC is probably a 7/10, 5 or 6 on console.

Did you not update?

Cousin's ps4 was really choppy until he updated the game, then it ran well.

edit: Ah I see it updated. Guess it's just choppy :/. It ran alright on my rig but still had some drops in some cinematics. Overall it's pretty bad technically.

It's even funnier when you realize that without the black bars it would be even worse... and funniest thing of all is that the game still looks like crap.

Took some special skill to use an engine designed to run at 60fps and turn it into ... that. I'm glad I waited for the Digital Foundry tests, it saved me from a regrettable purchase.

Who invented the 'black bars are cinematic' thing anyway? Was that down to David Cage or had someone else come up with it first? I hate them.

The game is the worst looking and performing PS4 game I've played. I liked it but it's severely lacking on the technical side.

Who knows. RE4 did use black bars though...so Mikami is using his old techniques

RE4's black bars weren't nearly as egregious as The Evil Within. Shit takes almost 1/3rd of my 50 inch =/

And I'm only being a little hyperbolic. I can't see shit. I get that he wanted us to feel claustrophobic but Alien did a far better job and allowed us superior viewing options (with the well done peeking and all).

It's not even scary, and while gunplay is good the horrible black bars and TERRIBLE framerate (PS4 here) really kills it for me. I think I'll play it once then sell it.

Not sure who coined the phrase but if you know anything about the history of cinema and television, then you would understand the changes in aspect ratios over time. Plenty of directors have shot their films in 2.35:1 or 2.40:1 for specific reasons. Feel free to do some research.

You are correct. I just wanted to add some other facts:

1: Movies in other formats still feel like movies (...), the cinematic feel doesn't vanish in a puff of smoke just because it's not in the film nerd format of choice
2: Games are not movies
3: Most people have 16:9 format displays. Because of #2, artificially gluing on black bars to hide a part of the display for idiotic reasons is complete and utter bullshit.
4: Judging from the PC version TEWI is exactly as much or little "cinematic" with or without black bars.

It's horrible, I made it to like the end of chapter 7 before I couldn't take it anymore. The first encounter with that box head guy in the room of poison gas was practically a slideshow while sprinting.

I have the platinum, so my experience with the game is quite significant. The PS4 version definitely has some annoying frame-rate issues quite often.
If only they had not decided to implement their own lighting engine into the game.
