Is The Evil Within on consoles supposed to suffer from major frame rate issues? Help

Wait a minute, how do you know they give their best for the console version?
I don't know that. I just know that they did put forth improvements. Maybe they simply put forth *more* effort to improve the PC version than on consoles. Its extremely unlikely, but not impossible I guess.

But like I said, you seem to be an expert on the subject, so please, I'm sorry if I'm way off base here.

40-60 fps is a bad framerate? That's easily double what most console games have.

I consider it bad because I was used to constant 60 for the last 8 years or so. But this year with the new nextgen games popping up, I had to lower my standards a bit. AC Unity and few other games run at 40-60 instead of constant 60, no matter the details. At least until I get some new 980esque GPU.

Game is hot garbage. Wouldn't play it for free.

Sub 30fps AND crappy letterboxing.
No thank you sir!

The game is good, the performance is garbage. I'm sensitive to framerate issues, but I was still able to greatly enjoy the game on PS4. There's no question that PC is the way to go and I prefer something like a 1.9 aspect ratio, which you can easily customize (default on PC and consoles is 2.5:1).

Since the game was so cheap on the last Steam sale, I double-dipped on it to test out my new 970.

It's worth noting that Chapter 3, where the OP's videos are from, has the worst general framerate of any chapter by quite a bit. The engine really also hates fire effects, so any level with a lot of fire tanks the framerate, too.

I like the game for what it is but the game runs like absolute arse on PS4. The black bars don't even make sense as they sure as hell aren't smoothing the frame rate. Game also has a rough start with the first few chapters being bleh. It does improve a lot though.

On PC you can easily test the framerate differences given by running the game at different aspect ratios. The default 2.5:1 AR has MASSIVE fps increases over the full-screen option.

PS4 would have exploded if this game tried to run on it in full-screen, without the "black bars".

Wow, that sucks. I played the demo on Steam and enjoyed it, but my PC is not that strong and I couldn't max out the settings and still got sub-30 FPS at times. I figured a PS4 would perform better than my PC (which runs last-gen games just fine, but current-gen ones kinda like crap) so I put the PS4 version on my Christmas list.

I guess that was a mistake... :S

I still haven't gotten around to playing it. But reading this thread, and another thread which gave it as example of cheap OHKO deaths, I'm feeling the urge less and less...

How can anyone still buy any Bethesda published game on consoles?
I actually completely forgot it was published by Bethesda. I should have paid more attention, since that's really a red flag.

Yeah, literally any time there's fire on screen the framerate dies. Using a torch is brutal sometimes.

This must be why I got motion sickness playing this game on PS4. I quit playing and never went back to it, though I do want to finish it one day.

Yeah, technically speaking the game is pretty shameful. There is no reason we should suffer those big black bars after spending good money on a PS4. The developer simply failed in this regard.

That said, these issues aren't game breaking. There's a lot of neat stuff in there; great levels and scary monsters. I play once a week when a friend who loves horror comes by. I would love to commit my time and complete the game but the technical issues prevent me from that level of enjoyment.

It's actually a shame, this game should have been much better.

That sucks that you get motion sickness from it. The framerate is okay, I didn't mind it. This has been my favourite PS4 game so far, so if you can, definitely give it another go.

Played it on the PS4 it sort of ran like ass but was still enjoyable. The story is all over the place but it actually feels pretty unique.

If frame rate dips do bother you all that much, don't play this on consoles.

Sorry for the bump, but didn't want to start a new thread. I'm about to start this on PS4 (regular not pro), and I noticed that they eventually added the option to remove the black bars. Does anyone know if removing the black bars severely impacts frame rate? Can't see it mentioned in the thread, and just thought I'd check before starting my play through.

Thanks!

It runs largely the same with or without letterboxing on console. If there is a difference in framerate it has to be an extremely small one. I've played through the game multiple times on PS4 with both settings.

Game is jank as hell on my OG PS4. Boost mode on my Ps4P helped a ton though, even got to play it with the letter boxing turned off with minimal issues.

Buy a Pro and play it in boost mode will get you a very steady 30fps. Otherwise don't believe the hyperbole and play this great game on a standard PS4 like many did before you and enjoyed it enormously, great game!

Runs and looks great on PC. The facial models look like PS3 era but the backgrounds and textures are amazing. I run it unlocked at 165hz and it stays solid. LOL 30fps.

id Tech 5 was originally designed to run at locked 60fps in all instances. If there's anything wrong with TEW (and there obviously is) then it's all down to Tango.
The problem with TEW is Tango having to use an engine designed around a fairly basic baked lighting model with barely any dynamic light sources to speak of and matte, earthy materials and make a game based on dynamic lighting and shadows with many instances of wet, glossy, organic, specular materials.
It's a game made with an innapropiate tool, and with great results at that.

There is no hyperbole. Even a Pro with boost mode can't solve all the game's stuttering issues, and the aliasing on console is absolutely pathetic. It has jaggies like a PS2 game.

Definitely hyperbole. Literally the last game I finished and it ran fine on the Pro. I'm not sure when you last played a PS2 game, but it certainly didn't look anything like TEW.

lol I was on such a good streak too of buying games for my PS4 that I probably should have just got for my gaming PC, but it was good in that all the games I got ran very decent, even for something like Far Cry 4 that ran a smooth 30FPS the whole time on PC (I heard the PC version got the microstutter like Watch Doge PC had, so I'm really happy I didn't have to deal with that), but Evil Within is finally the first game where I really really regret not getting it on PC. That sale though

Don't know if OP is still around but just wanted to say that you heard wrong. Far Cry 4 runs great, it's especially smooth at 144hz.
