Is the fatal frame series really that scary?

If any video game series deserves a "HD Trilogy" it's Fatal Frame.

I played through each game in the series (still haven't played much of IV on Wii though), and loved every second of them.

I found 3 to be the scariest, simply because at the time I played it I was living in in a 2-floor apartment/townhouse in rural Japan that was literally haunted!

I'd hear noises like footsteps/talking upstairs despite the fact that my closest neighbor was 3 apartments away.
Even worse: one morning I saw a child-sized handprint in the condensation on a window.
On the second floor.
On the inside of the window!

OMG, you gotta be joking.

Scared the shit outta me. Yes.

edit: How awesome would a Fatal Frame HD collection be?? With 5.1 or something...brrrr
edit 2: beaten earlier on the page!

Yes, I've been clamoring for an HD trilogy of Fatal Frame since they began making them. FF IV would have been nice too, but I guess that ship has sailed.

Fatal Frame 2 and Amnesia are the most scary games that I've ever played. So I'd say yes (and the story is pretty good/depressing too. At least in II, I can't speak for the other ones).
Yeah. Amnesia is FUCKING scary. I tried to play it under the influence once. FUCK THAT! I couldn't even get past the title screen. That shit is creepy as Hell.

OH. FUCK. NO.

I would move out IMMEDIATELY.

As someone who has played every horror game in existence and is pretty much desensitized to all of them, yes. It's easily in the upper echelon, right up there with Amneisa, System Shock 2 and Seaman.

By the way, anyone with a backwards compatible PS3 or a PS2, these games can be found easily online.

Fatal Frame - $19.99

Fatal Frame II - Crimson Butterfly - $25.22

Fatal Frame III - The Tormented - $26.99

Or, if you want to find them locally, for some reason Gamestop seemed to get flooded with copies a couple months back, and you may get lucky. Though, you'll be paying $30 a pop, so Amazon is clearly the better deal. And a sure thing.

I would have listed the Xbox versions, but for some reason, they're extremely expensive on Amazon.

Fatal Frame on Wii U would be amazing!! Using the controller as a camera is a given!!

Take that a step further and require people to use headphones on the controller for certain sounds.

*too big of a wimp to play these games* :P

Fatal Frame 2 really made me so nerves... wish they make FF5 :-(
I'm not sure I'd want that. With 4 games it had a good run. A successful horror formula is hard to get right once, and keeping it fresh and scary only gets harder every time.

I've only played Fatal Frame 2 and any fear I had was short-lived. Starting it off? Yeah it was very scary. After getting grabbed a few times by a ghost and having the camera zoom up to their faces while the colors on the screen flashed and inverted, I realized I had seen the worst of it.

A few camera upgrades later, my camera is officially OP and FF2 become this desperate man's Pokemon Snap. If FF2's tale failed to take me in, I probably would've put the game away. I was ready to whoop some ghastly ass by the end of the game. I'll also admit I was sort of afraid in the endgame because of how all the details you learn about the town start to come together.

I think it didn't help I beat Amnesia a bit before playing FF2. The first half of Amnesia was genius, horrifying trolling.
