Is the Valkyria Chronicles IP completely defunct?

I seem to vaguely recall a lot of the original staff for Valkyria Chronicles were moved to work on those Shining games that they never localize. I don't recall where I heard that though, so maybe I'm just imagining things.

Well if that's true at least they are still within Sega.

I wouldn't say drastically improved, more like a lateral shift. The biggest change I remember is that VC2 has smaller maps because of PSP memory constraints, so each mission is split up into several different areas connected by base camps. There are also tank upgrades, more classes and a more robust class upgrade system with varying roles, though parts of that system are straight up garbage (you have to collect a bunch of parts to upgrade each character, and those parts only come via random drops, so you could grind out missions for hours and still not be able to upgrade someone to a Fencer Elite because the RNG didn't give you that last part you needed).

VC3 gets rid of that part system in favour of a more streamlined XP-like system--the more you use a character, the faster they get to upgrade to a better class. You can also switch a character's base class at any time (ex. from Shocktrooper to Scout) and if they've already unlocked more advanced classes in that group I think they have access to them immediately as well (ex. Gunner or Shocktrooper Veteran in the Shocktrooper group). Otherwise it's very similar to VC2.

P.S. Stupid VC2 high school bullshit. Worst part of Valkyria Chronicles ever.
Hm, very interesting. I thought I remembered something about grinding being a factor in VC2, but didn't remember for certain. Thanks for the summaries.
I loved the first game but never had any interest in the other games or the anime or anything else in the series because I also hate the fanservice and don't think it belongs in the series at all.

And yeah the high school setting of VC2 looked incredibly stupid.
The anime was a terrible reinterpretation of VC1's story, complete with a really dumb love triangle added between Alicia/Welkin/Faldio. Definitely not missing anything. Also, did I mention that the anime killed off
Vyse
? Yeah, screw that show.

First game was brilliant, the reason I bought a PS3 at the time. Sequel was pretty ho-hum; I beat it, but the short subway-friendly missions wore thin pretty quickly for someone like me who was sitting at home playing, versus on the go. It was a slog.

And someone mentioned fan service... the sequel is where that started, I thought the writing was pretty obnoxious.

Well VC3 was way better than the second. At least story and character wise (dropped that highschool bs). Gameplay was pretty similar to second though (well because of limitations of PSP).

I'd love an ambitious PS4 game but the likelihood of that happening is remote. The PS3 Valkyria Chronicles was the last SEGA game I played on a console.

Yeah just like Mega Man.... so.... totally not dead
I made myself cry a little

I still remember the silhouette teaser for VC3...i was so excited back then...

Imagine if they would do something like that for a hypothetical VC4 teaser for PS4/Vita...i think i would cry from excitement.

Would love to play a VC from the perspective of the Empire, 100 or so years after the war.

So, yeah, really hoping Sega gets a move on number 4. I only bought every localized game and artbook on release, but no biggie.

So GAF has 131,298 members and if everyone would donate 200 bucks for VC4 we could gather 26 million dollars! Maybe that would be enough for PS4 Valkyria with Sega funding the rest of budget.

=(

I figure it is probably dead, at least outside of mobile/browser stuff. The move to PSP killed any sales potential the series had worldwide in an effort to give it a boost in Japan, but the game ended up selling about the same as the PS3 game there while totally bombing in the west. It was also rushed out to coincide with the anime IIRC, and VC3 for PSP was already planned before they had data for VC2.

VC1 sold decently in the west after it got a second wind based on what I've heard, it did pretty horribly at release though since the timing was abysmal. That was more on Sega sending it to die than anything else though.

I'm not sure what platform a new game could be released on that would actually have any worldwide sales potential. PS4 in the west. ??? in Japan? 3DS? It hasn't been on a non-Sony console yet.

Why not play from perspective of Empire some time after events of VC1. Galean front was but a small conflict within a giant war.

VC4 on PS4. Shhhhhhhhhhhh. Let me dream.

Four Games. Two were great one was good and one was for browsers so I never played it. I think VC was explored enough from a franchise perspective. I would love another franchise with the same level of ambition, though.

I bought the game on day 1 and i remember Sega didn't try to market this game at all.As you say it seemed liked they just tossed the game to the western market and expected the game to magically start selling.
If the OT here in GAF is any indication most people didn't even knew the game came out and this was in one of the (if not THE) most informed gaming forums on the internet.
I understand that it would have been hard to market a game with an art style like that but IMO Sega didn't even tried.

I think VC's fanbase is mostly on Sony's systems (both in Japan and in the west) so it would have made sense to remain for those.PS4 would have made sense for both Japan and rest of the world.
Maybe an episodical digital-only type of game released through PSN could keep costs down for Sega and it could also fit with VC's storytelling through chapters.

I'm still in the camp that believes the series have the potential to become one of Sega's flagship franchise, if only they gave it the chance it deserves.

I bought a Ps3 for Valkyria Chronicles and I wasn't disappointed.

What was disappointing though was how Sega refused to build upon it's potential.

It's on life support that's for sure, the team wants to do it and it's getting a lot of love in other games, outfits have shown up in PSO2, Selvaria and Alicia have shown up in a few MOBAs like Chaos Heroes and card games and there's a Valkyria stage in Dengeki Bunko Fighting Climax

but I dont see sega funding a new one, and if they did I still wouldnt see Sega West localising it

maybe if there was a fan campaign to beg sony to fund one or something

Are the original team members still within Sega? And if they are what other game they have made after VC3?

The original team didnt make VC2 or 3, a small number of them worked on VC2 and a small number worked on a bad shining game, VC3was made by the guys who make wild arms.

The original creator of Valkyria, Ryutaro Nonaka, has worked on Shinobi 3ds and now on Dengeki Bunko Fighting Climaxbut it's just him and a couple of other dudes overseeing that, dunno what the bulk of the team are doing

Isn't the director for Valkyria Chronicles working on the SEGAXDengeki crossover fighting game?

Dammit, stop wasting his talent on these sort of things!

PS4/Vita VC4 would be nice...that CANVAS engine...

I still play this game on PS3. Sometimes I need a break from some of my current games and even my backlog. I'll pull this out and play it again. I wish there were trophies though,.

I would like to see II and III come out for PS+

They put it out on PS3, and obviously it didn't make enough money to continue the franchise.

They follow it up with a lower budget, wider install base release on PSP, and make some changes to help it sell better in Japan (School). It sells enough to make a 3rd, follow up game in Japan, but bombs hard in the US where the PSP was languishing. So they make a 3rd game for the PSP, and don't localize it for the US because the PSP market is mostly dead and no one bought the last one.

It's not like they didn't try (I'm surprised it even got a sequel after bombing on PS3), but it looks like it's dead as far as full priced console games go

A prequel focusing on Selvaria with waifu elements would make the game sell better than anything.
