Is there really only one really good 3D platformer on 3DS?

Kid Icarus Uprising is a 3D game and it's the sequel to a platformer.
And there are areas where you jump around between platforms. ...by the use of jump pads, but hey.

It's not even close to a platformer. There are the occasional jump pad bits, but it is definitely an action game.

3D platformers are rare now unfortunately. I checked to see what I have in my collection and all I have are Super Mario 3D Land and Jett Rocket II. Super Mario 3D Land is okay but I did a foolish thing and played 3D World first, then 3D Land. Big mistake since it felt like a big step down.

If you're really starved for 3D platformers on the 3DS I think the only other game I would recommend is Super Mario 64 DS from the original DS. It plays a bit better with the 3DS's analog slide pad but it still doesn't control as well as the original N64 version. It's still a lot of fun though.

If you have another way to play games. Try getting into the Mirrors Edge:Catalyst beta. Pure First person 3D platforming joy

You say this like there is wide consensus on 3D Land bring a weak or disliked entry when this isn't the case. It got a broad amount of critical and player praise, sold well, and lots of people like myself consider it one of the finest 3D Mario games ever made.

Like any Mario entry, it has its detractors, but "easily considered" is pretty hyperbolic.

I would venture to say that while indeed Sunshine has a lot of valid criticisms, it's remembered pretty fondly by the lot of the people who liked it. 3D Land is a very great game, but upon replaying it, I found it lacking something. I also didn't like the fact that 3D Land's second area reused a lot of stuff, though I can't say that it wasn't fun.

I'm not surprised Nintendo never made another one, seeing as they've made maybe one other non-Mario 3D platformer ever, but I'm surprised that so few third-party devs (indie or otherwise) have even attempted their own.

The saddest part about the 3DS being on the way out is that it'll never get a 3D Shovel Knight game.

Well, there's also Sonic Generations, which, even if we assumed it was a platformer (which I find arguable), had its serious performance issues.

I have to echo this sentiment too. Sunshine is an incredible game. It has so much personality and was a creative twist to the 3D formula. I think it's great and overly maligned.

3D Land, while very fun, feels somewhat empty and overprocessed. It's basically a 2D mario game that they turned into a 3D game, and like the NSMB series, it features sterile, lifeless graphics and enemies.

Yeah. To its credit, it's better than any of the New SMB games.

If you have a Vita as well then you should get Daxter. It's a PSP game, but has aged very well and is a ton of fun!

Just to note, I tried Daxter on my Vita and it laaaged.

Worst part is, even while 3D Land is a very good game, the only 3D platformer the 3DS has is the one that is easily considered the weakest 3D Mario.

I disagree, at 35 and having grown up as an original era Nintendo kid of the 80's (having also had all of the Nintendo consoles after); 3D Land is easily my favorite.

3DLand and Mario 3.

I thought Sunshine was just average
though I felt terrible for tearing those arms off of that giant blooper
...

... but only if you exclude the levels where you didn't have your water backpack. Now those levels were sublime! It felt like a perfect evolution of the Mario 64 gameplay; it could be challenging, but it always felt fair to me.

Everything you've said applies to me too. 3D Land is my favorite Mario game, Mario 3 is my favorite 2D Mario.

I'm also 35.

I have a Vita, don't those have awful framerates due to being PS3 downports rather than PS2 up ports?
Don't even bother, Jak trilogy is unplayable, Ratchet is barely a platformer (or at least not what you are looking for if you want a real platformer) and Sly has always been kind of mediocre imo (the first one is all right though).

And Dexter is not good. Not even by 2006 PSP standards.

Gamers have been playing 3D platformers without a second stick for decades. That has nothing to do with anything.

Yeah, if anything over-reliance on the second stick makes 3D platformers worse. How are you supposed to hit the jump and attack buttons if your thumb is constantly busy waggling the right stick around to find the perfect camera angle? The best 3D platformers and action-adventure games make use of a smartly-designed auto camera and a single button to lock on to a target or quickly recenter the camera.

Jett Rocket II is pretty good overall but only half of it is 3D and it's a short game so it doesn't offer a lot of 3D platforming.

Sonic Lost World isn't necessarily bad, but it's got maddening sections, which is why I gave up on it. Twice.

The first Skylanders game was rather good while it lasted but it is ridiculously short unless you buy overpriced toys. I got Skylanders Trap Team and played a little of it. It seems okay.

R&C and especially Sly are fine. There are also the Oddworld Xbox games.

Jak and daxter port is crap though.

No-one knows it, but Pac-Man & The Ghostly Adventures 2 on 3DS is actually a 3D platformer and a faithful port of the console version.

I knew it but I don't know anything else. How is it?

By the way, everybody forgot about Crush3D.

I wouldn't say the Jak port on Vita was unplayable... But Jak II it's really weird because there's input lag. Still, I managed to Platinum the game so it can't have been that bad.

Sunshine feels more unique and has a stronger identity but l don't see how you can bash 3D Land for having filler content and then sing the praises of Sunshine. Sunshine is one of these Nintendo games from that Gamecube period that felt unfinished, not in the sense that they were bugged or anything but a lot of the content felt like pointless busywork. That goddamn mission where you have to hop on a slow moving boat with Yoshi is worse than anything in 3D Land.

The Delusions of Von Sottendorff and His Square Mind is a 3D puzzle-platformer (but it doesn't skimp on the platforming) and I rather like it. I haven't finished it yet, but so far its pretty good, and I can unreservedly rave about its great soundtrack.

its one of those hidden gems on the eShop that doesn't get nearly enough attention (and probably sales for that matter).

How come I've never noticed this? And I check eshop quite often :O

If you have a Vita, there's Tearaway & ports of Sly Cooper and the aforementioned Ratchet & Clank.

My Vita also has the Crash Bandicoot games since I was lucky enough to download them during the 24-hours or so where everything that you owned on the PSN could be downloaded to the Vita (grabbed Brave Story also while I was at it). :)
R&c are more acion shooters than platformers imo

Disregard Sonic Lost World 3DS recommendations.

Sadly when it comes to 3D platformers, you're limited wherever you look. Jett Rocket 2 is alright despite having the most boring protagonist of all time, and Super Mario 64DS controls much better with the 3DS's circle pad than with the DS's d-pad.

One of the worst 3D Sonic games

Absolutely. I'd rank it as the very worst, actually.

But it is good. It's not GREAT, but it's decently good fun.

Fun was something I never once had during our brief time together.

I loved Sonic Lost World U.

Considering that, is it still bad ?

It's a different (and worse) game that uses a lot of the same ideas. I found the HD version to be tolerable for the most part.

The 3ds version has classic and sonic rush gameplay,no 3d.
Bah, totally forgot the 3d requirement, my bad. But the game has glaring performance issues. As re whether it's a platformer, let's say it's non-traditional.
