U2 gave a concert this week near where I live, so I have to hear from hysterical fans how great the band is. Bugger off. One isn't even that great of a song. Bono is a proper twat too. I can die happy if I never have to listen to his voice again, but I won't because apparently One is one of the greatest songs mankind has ever produced. And who calls himself The Edge? A fucking weirdo that's who.

No, The Beatles are.

You are both right.

Judging by the amount of incredible bands out there who never gets to number 1 on the charts or even top 10 i would say pretty much 99 % of the bands on the top 10 chart are overrated. Heck even top 100 probably fits within this.

The more success you enjoy the more overrated you get.

Joshua Tree and War are stellar albums. Their 2000+ albums are mediocre. 80s U2 was a tour de force in the alt. scene.

Up there, not as bad as the Beatles who are laughably overrated. Queen too. REM, and although she isn't a band Beyonce is horrifically bad.

I'll give you Queen.
Queen too.

U2 was great in the 80ies, and up to "Achtung Baby".

It's hard to believe these days, but back then they were actually kind of "cool" and in a way "alternative".

After the incredible success they had with "Achtung Baby" and all their weird imagery they were using, they went to shit, though...

Yup, basically U2 was the Foo Fighters of the 80s - everyone loved them. Imagine everyone hating David Grohl in 15 years.

I am pretty sure they are appropriately rated. Joshua Tree is a phenomenal album, they've switched types of genre a few times, hung out with BB King, and still seem to draw some of the largest concerts.

Some people love U2's earlier alternative sound. It wasn't the broad everyday rock music sound they've created in the last 2 or so decades. They were a different band.

But anyways, all bands are overrated.

You'd have to consider The Beatles in context. Are people gonna talk about Miyamoto sucking in 50 years because Super Mario Brothers is "overrated?"

But yeah, U2 are one of the most overrated "big" groups.

Does it really matter? Just listen to the music you like, nod politely when other people are expressing their opinion of their favourite band and get on with life. Change the channel or radio station when appropriate.

People keep insisting that this band exists, and I've yet to ever see any evidence. I've never heard a U2 song, and I've never talked to anyone who likes U2 or could tell me a U2 song/album title. How Can U2 Be Overrated If They Don't Exist? One time I almost think I saw some of their songs appear in my music library, and then poof! Vanished. I was obviously daydreaming. U2's a load a bullshit.

Not by a long shot. They got a little poppy in their later years but still have an impressive collection of work. They also put on a great show (or at least they did the last time I saw them).

Gonna go with the Beatles and rolling stones

U2 has had some incredible albums. War, Joshua Tree, achtung baby,

They've put on incredible tours like zoo tv, 360

Sure bono can be a douche, but John Lennon beat his wife and treated his son Julian like shit

The string of U2's albums from War -> Unforgettable Fire -> Joshua Tree -> Achtung Baby is quality. ZooTV was also one of the most incredible tours ever produced. I think Zooropa and Pop were good too. I think they have a bunch of really good live show designers behind them to hide how bad in comparison they have been since 2001.

I see a lot of people mentioning Queen - their output after the start of the 80s wasnt great, but more than made up for that with their albums between 1973 and 1980. They always had incredible live shows consistently though.

You make a compelling argument.

I just looked up the list of Rolling Stone's top 500 greatest songs of all time and Satisfaction and Imagine are respectively the second and third greatest song of all time. Get the fuck outta here, Rolling Stone. And I like the songs.
